Stage 2 Excursion Milo T20 Blast Cricket Kindergarten Excursion String Ensemble Write a Book in a Day String Ensemble The Gully Excursion Dear Parents and Carers Yesterday I went to a Parish meeting at Our Lady of the Nativity church Lawson. At this meeting we were presented with ideas about what our Church will look like inside. A number of months ago a vandal threw a fire bomb through a stained glass window. Fortunately a passer-by noticed the flames and the fire was extinguished before there was any structural damage. However, the inside of this small church has had some significant damage. In yesterday s Gospel reading, Jesus challenges us to not put aside the commandment of God and cling to human traditions (Mark 7). At OLN we gather in the school hall for mass each week as the repairs will take many months. It does not look like our Church, but it feels like our church. The new interior of the OLN church will look different when completed, but it will still be our church. Jesus asks us to focus on the meaning of being a catholic and not be tied up with human traditions. Change is always difficult for people, but so long as the deeper meaning of what we are doing does not alter, a change does not really matter. What Human Traditions do you hold onto too tightly? 2 Enrolling Now for 2016 Fathers Day Stall The Fathers Day Stall will be held tomorrow Tuesday 1st September Gifts from $1 to $5 Fathers Day Stall Raffle Tickets Every family has been sent home Raffle Tickets for the World Youth Day. All proceeds from the sale of the tickets will assist Miss Lauren Bennett on her pilgrimage and mission costs to Krakow in All tickets sold with payment or unsold must be returned. Calmsley Hill Farm Kindergarten had a wonderful day on Friday visiting the farm. They fed the animals, milked a cow and even went on a tractor ride. It was a great experience for the littlies. Milo Cricket Today our Milo Cricket teams from Stage 2 and 3 played at Falls reserve. National Literacy and Numeracy Week This Wednesday we are celebrating National Literacy and Numeracy Week. At the beginning of the day the students will focus on writing something about birthdays. After morning tea in mixed groups, they will rotate around activities relating to their birth date. After lunch we will have some whole school activities around birthdays. Try this at home: - what are the first four digits of your date of birth (eg. Today would be 3108, tomorrow would be 0109)? What activity could you create using these four digits? St Canice s String Ensemble This Friday begins the CSE Canice s String Ensemble. All students in Years 3 and 4 and other students who have a string instrument, are invited to this opportunity from 3pm to about 4:30pm in the school hall. Instruments will be distributed at this session. Book Club Book Club Pamphlets were sent home last week. Orders need to be returned and/or processed online by Wednesday 2nd September. Parent Body Meeting Postponed The Parent Body Meeting that was scheduled for this Tuesday at 7pm has been postponed till next Tuesday 8th September at 7pm Book Week Parade Last week we had a wonderful Book Week parade to celebrate reading. Students were grouped across the grades into 10 groups and moved around the school listening to teachers reading their favourite picture book. The students experienced teachers loving reading. This is something you could do each night with your child/ren read. Mrs Hartnett quoted that it is written If you read you celebrate 1,000 lives, if you don t read you celebrate just one life. At the end of last year we spent a significant amount of money on new reading books for the older grades. These are vital resources in our school.

4 Kaitlyn s Story Kaitlyn was diagnosed with a very large brain tumour two weeks before Christmas last year. Kaitlyn had 2 emergency surgeries and spent 7 days in intensive care and a couple of months at home recovering. On Sunday 16th August Kaitlyn had a wish come true by the Starlight Children s Foundation. Her wish was to meet the Madden Brothers on the set of The Voice. A limousine picked Kaitlyn, her brother Luke and Mum Mellissa up from a hotel where they were driven to the studio to meet them. Later that evening they were given tickets to watch the show The Voice as well. Thankfully Kaitlyn is now doing well. Congratulations on being granted your wish.

5 School Calendar Student Banking The Commonwealth Bank have decided to immediately recall the Cosmic Light Beam Torch from our School Banking rewards program due to a potential safety issue. Potential hazard: The torch contains four button batteries that may be accessed by unscrewing the back of the item. If a young child gains access to these batteries and ingests them, they may suffer serious injuries. We take the safety of our customers seriously and are immediately recalling the torch as a precautionary measure. We are also taking steps to make schools and parents aware of our actions. The recall only applies to customers who have redeemed the Cosmic Light Beam Torch as part of the Commonwealth Bank School Banking rewards program. Everyone is invited to gather in the Cathedral forecourt at 12.30pm. Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP will bless the statues at 1pm and this will be followed by an address to young people and afternoon tea.
