1 A u g u s t V o l u m e 2 1 I s s u e 8 We live in a world that seems to be spinning out of control. Each day brings new challenges not only to us as secular beings but also as a Christians. We are torn. We don t know what will fix the problems. We live with our feet in both worlds and struggle to make sense of it all. We struggle with the nonsense and violence because we know that it is wrong. The world as it is, is not as God intended it to be! It is the Monday of Holy Week. Jesus lives and teaches in the tension of Sunday s acclimations and Friday s execution. He has face the opposition of the religious leaders many times though out his ministry and that opposition only grows stronger and bolder. When asked by the Pharisee s which commandment in the law was the greatest, Jesus replies: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. (Matthew 22:37-40) What we see in this scripture is center to what really matters in life--love! When we love God with all our being (heart, mind and soul) the things of this world start to fall into place. We find it easier to face life s problems. But now comes the hard part, that love your neighbor thing. This command makes us a little more uncomfortable. Our neighbor! Who is our neighbor? Our neighbor is all of God s children, every last one of them, no exceptions, no excuses! We are to love them all. Really God, we are to love everyone? Do you know how hard that is? I m not sure I can love someone who does not look like me. Someone, whose skin color is different from mine. Someone, who speaks a different language than I do. Someone, who dresses differently than I do. Someone who. you fill in the blank. Someone, who is so totally different from me that it makes me uncomfortable. But, we hear Jesus say this is the greatest commandment, second only to loving God. This is what it is all about-- LOVE; loving God and our neighbors. Imagine if we could do that routinely every day of our lives, how the world would change. If love would spread throughout our community, throughout our country and throughout the world, things would change. Love conquers all. There would be no more wars. No more genocide. No more children going hungry and dying from starvation. No more us against them. The world would be as God intended it to be! We can facilitate that change, simply by loving. I urge you to put down your prejudices, your preconceived notions, and in some cases, your hatred of your neighbor. Burt Bacharach and Hal David had it right when they wrote, What the world needs now is love, sweet love, it s the only thing that there is way to little of WAKE WEEKLY WORSHIP SCHEDULE: Saturday Night Casual Service: 5:00 PM Sunday Morning Traditional Service: 8:30 AM Sunday School: 9:30 AM Sunday Morning Contemporary Service: 10:35 AM I Love you Lord (Lord Today) Edwin Haswkins sings [ ] I lift You up, and I magnify Your name; that's why my heart is filled with praise. This statement was released regarding the program., Planning VBS is a huge task, and beginning stages of planning usually begin in the middle of winter. This year, planning didn t start until right at the end of school in May. There were a TON of concerned, and maybe even upset, people in the community. I was approached by some of those people, and we decided to try and plan something for August. After a few meetings, we decided that it just couldn t happen. Between lack of volunteers, and finances, and the time crunch, it wasn t in the cards. This is something that has been weighing pretty heavy on the minds of the planning team, as well as mine. The team that I had the chance to work with was absolutely amazing! So, rest easy, guys. We are already planning stuff for next year! On behalf of the planning team and myself, I am truly sorry that VBS could not happen this year. I hope that everyone understands, we tried. ~ Trevor Howard ~ Rushville First United Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We seek to make a difference for Christ within the local and global community by waking to Christ, worshiping Christ, walking with Christ, working for Christ and witnessing for Christ.

The Open Arms Preschool was opened in the fall of 1998, to provide a Christian based preschool for the entire Rushville area as well as for the surrounding areas. It was designed to be a Christian play based learning environment which stressed the following areas: Social and Emotional Growth, Self Help Skills, Gross and Fine Motor Development, Language Development, Cognitive Functioning, as well as a basic introduction to Prayer and the Basic Bible Stories. Openings are available for our school year. Contact any preschool board member or call the church office today for more information. You can also complete the application online to enroll your child. Published prayer requests are received over the past month through prayer cards and requests. In order to be conscientious concerning personal privacy, we will only print names of those who are family members or have been confirmed/requested by the person(s) named.
6 INVITATION: Opportunities to share Good News! Good Samaritan Fund (formerly the Christian Scout Fund) History: This fund was established in January 1999, by a church member in response to hearing on an article from the Chicken Soup for the Soul entitled the Christmas Scout. To help our church family better understand this fund, it was proposed to the members who access the money that the name be changed The Good Samaritan Fund. According to a newsletter article, the church member wanted to begin a program that would address unmet needs of children and single-parent families in our community. The original intent was to meet specific needs that slipped through the existing care and services network in our community. Over the course of time, the fund received monies from special offerings taken during the Christmas and Easter Seasons and from private donors. The fund is accessed through the church office and administered through three members of the mission team of the church. During its existence, the fund was used to help a number of families with food, utilities, medicine, clothing needs and other emergency support. Each year, we receive numerous requests for assistance from the fund to help when other agencies can t meet the need. Requests are reviewed by the committee and must be approved by the majority vote. The amount of assistance given is limited to funding, and requests may be limited per person to every 6 months.
