1 D e c e m b e r V o l u m e 2 0 I s s u e 1 2 GOD ENCOUNTERS: Your stories of life and faith WAKE Shake No More, Judy! In case anyone doubts whether God hears our prayers, my experience should solidify his opinions. I was to play the organ and piano for Dr. Forrest Johnson s funeral at the Presbyterian Church. Jim & Tanya Devitt were to sing the Lord s Prayer. The accompaniment for this particular arrangement was more difficult than the usual one. So I had practiced many hours on it, but never got to the point that I was comfortable with it. I was nervous when I got up the morning of the funeral, but as the time of the funeral came nearer my stress level grew exponentially. My hands were trembling and my insides probably would have hit a six on the Richter scale my nerves were completely out of control. I tried everything I had ever heard of that might help me to calm myself yawning, yoga breathing, pacing, exercising, etc. with zero success. Finally, as I sat in the choir loft, I prayed Dear God, I desperately need Your help. Every attempt I have made to calm myself has failed. I want this service to be a special honor to Dr. Johnson and to You, but I cannot play the right notes on the piano or the organ when my fingers are shaking so violently. Can You please, please, please help me? Thank you, Lord. By the time I moved to the organ bench to start the prelude music, my hands were totally quiet, and I had a peaceful confidence which allowed me to play that Lord s Prayer the best I had ever played it. Thank You, Thank You, my Lord. I love You. Submitted by Judy Busby HAVE YOU HAD A GOD ENCOUNTER? Each of those have their place in culture, lore and history, but there's only been one time in all of history where one could actually see and be witness to the Star of Wonder, the star that helped mark the miraculous birth of our Savior. God's love shines through this musical, created by Dave Clark and Jayme Thompson. With its simple drama and funto-sing songs, you can let your kids choir shine the light of Jesus like never before with this exciting new Christmas musical, Star of Wonder. The H.E.L.P. 6 I G N I T I O N : T H E D I S C I P L E S H I P C O N N E C T I O N O F F I R S T U M C WORK SERVING: Making a difference through action INREACH OUTREACH Successful Fall Harvest Dinner The nicely decorated Fellowship Hall (thanks Sylvia) was filled with lovely aromas from the well-equipped kitchen as about 270 community and church members enjoyed a delightful turkey dinner with all the trimmings on Friday, November 10th. The guests were welcomed and seated while waiters attended to each table offering food and drink. Others, about 70, came for takeout s. Background music and lovely lighting added to enjoyment of the evening. The organizational committee of Marion, Chris, Sheila, and Marjorie spent several days talking about the menu, shopping for various items, and unloading many sacks of groceries. Two days were spent in diligent work by many after Chris made the cranberry sauce on Wednesday evening. On Thursday, twenty turkeys arrived freshly and perfectly cooked from Roger s Bakery (Thank you so much Roger) and the deboning began in earnest. While several were doing this job, others were very busy making the apple and pumpkin desserts--chopping apples and mixing pumpkin and ingredients. Oh, also, the bread was broken and dried overnight for the dressing. On Friday with parts of our bodies aching that hadn t been used for a while, we began putting the dinner together in earnest. Dressing was made; corn and green beans opened and put in pans for warming and seasoning, and turnips (thanks to Rod and Barb) chopped, cooked and seasoned. The gravy was bubbling and potatoes were warming as were the rolls. And the turkey and dressings popped into the nice new ovens that cooked everything in an amazing way. Also, a refrigerator was moved (thank Peterman s) from the basement to the new kitchen and was soon filled with deboned turkey. At 3:30 pm we had requests for take outs which prompted us to quickly get our serving line ready. We served steadily until 7 pm which gave us a time to eat. Throughout the serving time, a blessed crew were busy cleaning plates and washing dishes (the dishwasher needs a part) which enabled us to clean and put away things by 9 pm. A warm feeling of accomplishment filled our hearts as our weary bodies moved a little slower toward the door as the lights dimmed and the quiet returned to the hall. The UMW would like to thank all who donated food, money and time to make the evening a blessed moment of community sharing and a monetary success. Operation Christmas Cookie If interested in helping with Operation Christmas Cookie there will be sign up sheets on the back table closer to time. There will be spots for cookie donations, supply donations and delivering opportunities. We will need help plating cookies on December 23rd. Any questions please see Niki Wise Christmas Dinner at Youth Group Youth Group Christmas Dinner Family Meal on Wednesday, December 13. Families are invited to come eat Christmas dinner and enjoy fun activities prior to meal. Supper will be served at 5:30. Menu will be ham, cheesy potatoes, vegetable and dessert. RSVP to Niki Wise or church office Thanks! Published prayer requests are received over the past month through prayer cards and requests. In order to be conscientious concerning personal privacy, we will only print names of those who are family members or have been confirmed/requested by the person(s) named.

7 I G N I T I O N : T H E D I S C I P L E S H I P C O N N E C T I O N O F WITNESS Open Arms Preschool The month of November has flown by at Open Arms Preschool. Our academic themes this month were Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and The Mail. As always, we ve been busily learning lots about our ABCs and 123s, but also some other very important things this month, such as what it means to be a veteran, what it means to be thankful, and what kinds of things we are thankful for. We enjoyed a nice visit with two local veterans on Friday, November 10, Ramon Escapa and April Kunkel. They spoke with the students about some of their experiences and what kinds of jobs people can have in the military. The students had made special thank you books to give to each of them and presented them to our guests at the end of their visit. We are very excited to announce that our fall fundraiser was a big success! As you may know, we sold cupcakes and cake balls made by Baker Street Sweets, which is a new local business owned and operated by Sarah Dodds. We are so thankful to everyone who helped us sell these goodies, to everyone who supported us by buying, and also to Sarah for working with us and for her generosity. Thank you very much! Delivery will be Monday, November 20. We are looking forward to the month of December and celebrating Christmas together at preschool. Happy Thanksgiving! Don t forget that Open Arms Preschool has dish clothes for sale and Christmas is coming, 6 for $15.00 or $3.50 each! INVITATION: Opportunities to share Good News! B O O K N O O K B Y S H E I L A A Place at the Table 40 Days of Solidarity with the Poor Author, Chris Seay Perhaps the primary reason why we struggle so deeply to be transformed into the character of Christ, is because so often, instead of living with humility and vulnerability, we are busy chasing power and prestige, according to Chris Seay in his book A Place at the Table: 40 Days of Solidarity with the Poor. After some introductory chapters on sharing gratitude, fasting and feasting, the book provides daily readings with meditations for the 40 fast days interspersed with 7 feast days. Each of the 40 fast days also includes a brief description of a person living in poverty. Many of the daily readings are from Exodus giving the reader plenty of opportunity to consider the Israelites reliance on God for their daily food. Readers may find this to be a useful resource during Lent. I found that many of the reflections were quite moving and the daily reminders of the situations of people living in poverty helped to put the considerations about fasting into context. The author is a pastor, speaker and author. In 1999 he founded a missional church, Ecclesia in Houston, Texas. A Place at the table is in the 2014 United Methodist Women reading Program in the category of social action. It is in the church library.
