1 June 2016 Activities! Snacks! Bible Stories! Bible Verses! Bible Challenges! Games & Crafts! Vacation Bible School June 6-10, :00 AM-12:00 PM 4 year olds thru 6th grade Volume 20 Issue 6 Preregistration Forms are available in the church office, by the elevator or in this issue. This year the kids will be collecting canned vegetables and canned fruit for the Schuyler County Food Basket and donating money towards Heifer International. Schuyler County Food Basket provides food to local residents who are in need of assistance. Heifer International empowers families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity-but their approach is more than just giving them a handout. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Their animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market. When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses. Animal donations can provide families a hand up, increasing access to medicine, school, food and a sustainable livelihood. The kids will be able to see how many animals they bought as the donations progress throughout the week. Thank you for your contributions! 2 Worship, Attendance & Giving for May Weekend of Sat 8:15 10:35 Offering May $4, May $3, May $3, May $3, May 29 Open Arms Preschool News News from the Pews Our last day of preschool was Friday, May 13. We were busy during our last week making time capsules for each individual student. This project was inspired by Mary Sue Merritt, who made them with her fifth grade students for many years. The time capsules are not to be opened until the students graduate from high school! Our graduation ceremony was held Wednesday, May 11 and we were thrilled to have more than 100 guests in attendance. It was awesome to see the sanctuary full with so many people there to support our students and our program. The kids did a fabulous job of entertaining, as always, and a good time was had by all. We have 6 students who will be moving on to Kindergarten in the fall: Ava Pollitt, Will Pollitt, Rachel Peterman, Moses Monteen, Elisabeth Burton, and Jacob Watkins. We wish them the best of luck and will miss them very much next year. We have many upgrades for our classroom and playground slated to take place this summer and we are very excited about that. Our class roster for the school year is filling up fast, so anyone interested in enrolling a student is encouraged to apply right away. From all of the students and staff at Open Arms, have a great summer! As a faith community, we graciously continue to return gifts to our generous God. Through His grace and the workings of His Holy Spirit, we are enabled to accomplish the ministry He has set for us in the community and throughout the world. Thank You. 4 THANK YOU TO ALL CHOIR DIRECTORS AND MUSICIANS News from the Pews United Methodist Women s Prayer Calendar 2016 You set aside time on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings to director your choirs by providing special music for the services and helping your choirs to learn music and further their gift of music for the glory of God. Even though at times you may think that your leadership goes unnoticed, it is well appreciated by all. Dianne Klitz, director of Angel Chimes, and Mary Sue Merritt, director of Joy Bells, have retired. Their many years of service to the choirs are greatly appreciated and we wish them all the best. Also, thank you to Shelia Burton, director of Generations; Kay Divan, and Jen Little, directors of Cherub Singers; Pastor Grant and Amy, directors of the 1-4 praise choir; for their dedication throughout the year. There are many besides those who sing or play in the choirs that share their gift of music through solos or duets or by participating in the Praise Band and we thank you for your talents you share with us. May God Bless you and have a wonderful summer and see you in the Fall. 7 Midwest Mission Distribution Center In the first couple of months of 2016, they partnered with Mombasa Relief Initiative (Kenya, Africa), the Sisters of St. Frances (Africa) and World Mission Outreach Center (Nicaragua). Mombasa Relief Initiative (MRI) has been providing health, education and economic enrichment opportunities for children and families in 7 different schools in Mombasa, Kenya for 20 years. Because of your donations, MMDC sent 298 Personal Dignity Kits and 301 Children s School Bags to Chicago, IL. MRI packed supplies in suitcases to carry to Kenya by 30 Missionaries. The Sisters of St. Frances in Independence, MO sent 7,000 pounds of MMDC supplies to African countries. This includes 916 little girl outfits, 558 little boy outfits, 36 school desks, 336 children school bags, 16 electric sewing machines, 9 treadle sewing machines and many other medical supplies. World Missions Outreach s desire is to reach the people of Nicaragua by meeting their spiritual and physical needs. They do this by equipping people with the right tools to help treat the root of poverty, not just the symptoms, through education and discipleship. MMDC sent medical supplies, sewing machines, Personal Dignity Kits, school bags and much more adding up to 14,691 pounds. This center distributed 3,780 cleaning buckets and 1,471 health kits to the people of Missouri and Illinois during the flood that happened right after the 2015 Christmas holiday. The distribution center has a Sewing Machine Crew, that cleans and repaired 1,000 sewing machines that ready to be sent to other countries. The United Methodist Women have taken several groups of ladies to Chatham for a day of volunteering at different times. The center is always looking for more volunteers. If anyone is willing to be part a group of volunteers please contact a member of the UMW to get a time scheduled to go and volunteer. Appreciation Breakfast For all EMT s, Police, and Fire Personal Come join us on Sunday, June 5, at 9:15-10:30 AM for an Appreciation Breakfast for all EMT s, Police and Fire Personal. 8 Snacks for Students News from the the Pews Thursday, May 19 completed the school year for Snacks for Students. This past school year August 21 through May 19 our loyal group packed 9,021 snacks for Pre K through 4th grade at Washington and Webster schools. We provide 9 or 10 healthy snacks each week, such as fresh fruit, juice, cereal, pudding, fruit cups, applesauce, peanut butter crackers, cracker jacks, pop tarts, and chips. The average cost of each students snack is $2.97. When there is a holiday weekend a jar of peanut butter and a sleeve of crackers are included, bringing the cost to $4.64 per student. We gave tooth brushes and paste to all the students in November and April. We receive donations from individuals and churches in the community. We certainly appreciate the donations from our congregation in the Christmas and Easter offering. We could not provide these snacks without everyone s help. The following people helped us during this school year: Christie Cox, Konnie Crane, Don Fagan, Shara Fagan, Julie Ford, Cory Garrett, Barb Hardy, Ron Herr, Sylvia Herr, Ruby Hess, Carol Klitz, Phyllis Peak, Connie Pepple, Ruth Phillips, Sally Poltawsky, Judy Quillen, Megan Quillen, Ryan Quillen, Ruby Rice, Marily Sillars, Audrey Sullivan, Joan Sullivan, Lainey Sullivan, Molly Sullivan, Joan Woodworth, and Sheila Yates.
