2 Dear First United Methodist Church Family, As an itinerant pastor who serves at the pleasure of our bishop and his cabinet, I write to inform you that a new appointment has been discerned for me. Effective July 1, 2018, I will begin serving as the directing pastor of St. John s United Methodist Church in Edwardsville, Illinois. We enter into this new season with a sense of gratitude, and leaning into the grace God has provided, and will continue to provide. While pastors willingly submit to the leadership of our cabinet of this conference, this move was initiated in part at my request. This congregation and community have shared great love with us, and the celebrations of this season have been a wonderful blessing to the Armstrong family. I pray this journey together has been a blessing for you, as well. Still, I strongly sense that God is now calling another pastoral leader who might better help this congregation fulfill our common charge to make disciples of Jesus Christ. That has been, and will continue to be our family s prayer for this church and this community throughout this time of transition. The cabinet is already working diligently to discern a new pastoral leader for this church. Please lift them and their work in prayer, asking God to guide them with wisdom and grace. Their task is weighty, but God s goodness is greater still. I invite you to keep your hearts open for what God is doing in our midst. My expectation is that a church dedicated to the service of Jesus Christ has it s best days still ahead. Please continue seeking God with that same hopeful expectation, giving the new pastor and his or her family the same sort of gracious welcome we received upon our arrival to Schuyler County. Over these next few months, I plan to do all within my ability to help equip the people of Rushville First UMC to lead well into this new season. The continuity of our churches doesn t come from the pastors, but from Jesus Christ, and His work through you - the dedicated servant-leaders who carry the Holy Spirit s vision forward, even as other faces may be changing. To that end, much of my time will be spent trying to encourage you all through this transition, and offering whatever useful knowledge I ve gained to those who may benefit from it. I also hope to spend some time simply lingering with the people of this church and community, if only to enjoy the sweet remaining time God grants us. Finally, I want to make certain I m caring for my family s needs, as this transition carries grief, excitement, and anxieties for each of us, as well. Our work is not done here. This is not goodbye yet, but it does begin a process that culminates in a farewell. I hope to tell you often between today and the day our family departs: thank you. Thank you for the privilege of being your pastor. Thank you for the benefit of your love. Thank you for the countless acts of service you ve rendered to Christ. Thank you for the laughter, tears, and memories. Though our time here may have been relatively brief, thank you for leaving an enduring mark on the heart of this family. The church belongs to Jesus. He entrusts it to our care as stewards for a short time. While we may, let s make the most of it. Yours in Christ, Pastor Grant, Amy, Lilli, Clara and Theo Armstrong
3 I G N I T I O N : T H E D I S C I P L E S H I P C O N N E C T I O N O F F I R S T U M C WORSHIP WORSHIP WARM-UP: This month s sermon series Miracles Sometimes I hear very smart, and even well intentioned people trying to describe miracles in the Bible like this: Well, they didn t have science to explain things that happened then, so they just said God did it. If they understood things like we do now, then they wouldn t have called it a miracle. They d call it medicine, or meteorology, or something like that. Are miracles only natural things that are easily explained - maybe even recreated - if we re just smart and well resourced enough to understand and access these things? There s nothing wrong with understanding, or discovering new ways that lives can be improved through deepening knowledge. Still, is God only going to wait around for a naturally occurring phenomenon to set the oppressed captives free? Does Jesus only offer sight to those who are wealthy enough to afford the glasses, contacts, or surgery? Or can God do something unique and unexpected? Is the Lord able to work in ways that we can t understand to bring people into a trusting relationship built on faith? If it comes down to a character question, is God willing to save folks who cannot save themselves? As we continue our sermon series leading up to Easter, we ll keep examining some of these questions about miracles, and why these signs and wonders confound and convince people still today. Please join us each weekend as we stand amazed at the power of God. 8 Open Arms Preschool I G N I T I O N : T H E D I S C I P L E S H I P C O N N E C T I O N O F WITNESS INVITATION: Opportunities to share Good News! During the month of February, we have learned about dental health, Valentine s Day, US Presidents, and Dr. Seuss at preschool. We had a very fun Valentine s Day party on February 14. The kids brought valentine boxes that they had decorated at home and exchanged valentines with all of their classmates. We also played some fun games and made a craft. Lots of parents and grandparents were able to join us for our party and we had a great time! We have big plans to celebrate Dr. Seuss birthday in our classroom during that upcoming theme and are looking forward to warmer weather so that we can enjoy our fabulous playground. We celebrated a few birthdays at school in recent weeks. Emily Caldwell, Makenna Martin, and Lizzie King all turned 4! Our class sang in church on Sunday, February 18. We were missing a few of our students, but the group did a fabulous job and we hope everyone enjoyed it. We are now kicking off our spring fundraiser and hope to have lots of success with that. We are selling items from LincolnLand fundraising, which is a company located in Virginia, IL. We are offering pizzas, cookie dough, cinnamon rolls, braided breads, cheese, and sausage. There are gluten-free options available. Please contact the church office, a preschooler s family, a preschool teacher, or any board member if you are interested in helping us out. (Board members are Laura Moore, Michel DeMoss, Barb Schoonover, Debbie Worthington, and Carol Breedlove.) Your support means a lot to us and we really appreciate it! We depend on our fundraisers to keep our tuition costs as low as possible. This fundraiser will end on Wednesday, March 7. We are currently low on a few supplies. If anyone would be willing to provide Clorox wipes or baby wipes, we would greatly appreciate and welcome your donation. Also, we are continuing to accept applications for this coming fall. Applications are available in the church office or online at fumcrushville.org. Thank you! Don t forget that Open Arms Preschool has dish clothes for sale and 6 for $15.00 or $3.50 each! 13 2018 REACH YOUTH MISSION TRIP This summer s youth mission trip is once again heading to Vassar, Michigan with Reach Mission Trips to serve and bless the people of that community who have need for demolition and construction work. Each year this trip lets us send high school students incoming freshmen to outgoing seniors into a really fun week of Christian service and leadership training. Short term mission trips cause students to change their view to see people and needs in a different way. Over these past several years, we ve seen students come home from these trips with a better understanding of what it is to love their neighbors as themselves. They see and meet needs better, even at home. These trips cost something, but they are life changing. Would you encourage our missionaries with your prayers and your support as they step out to serve Christ in a new and powerful way? Thank you for supporting the 2018 Reach Youth Mission Trip! Sincerely, Share Certificate of FUMC Reach Mission Trip Cost per share: $ This is to Certify Number of Shares: that is/are the registered holder(s) of share(s) in the 2018 FUMC Youth Mission Trip.
