1 Northeastern Presbyterian Church 2112 Varnum Street, NE, Washington, DC Telephone: (202) Fax: (202) Website: August 9, :00 a.m. Worship Service The Rev. Nancy E. Thornton, Pastor Northeastern Presbyterian Church
2 Tenth Sunday after Pentecost WELCOME! Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Prepare for worship in stillness and prayer. Enjoy worship by lifting your voice and your heart to God. After worship, enjoy the company of one another. Then, leave this place where your service begins. Prelude Greetings Invocation *Call to Worship **We stand with our hearts or our postures Do Not Enter SOZ refers to the Songs of Zion hymnal WE GATHER AS GOD'S PEOPLE IN PRAISE AND PRAYER One: You have been waiting long enough. It s time to listen for God s voice. Many: We have been waiting many a long night. One: Well, the day is here and the time is now to find new hope in God alone! Many: It is God! It is Jesus Christ, God himself, who is finally saving us! One: Then come and join in the hope we share of God s never-ending love. Many: We will celebrate by singing and praising God! *Hymn #140, Hymnal Holy, Holy Prayer of Confession Lord, we want the easy way out! When things go wrong, we want to find who to blame for our misfortune. When we don t get what we want, we want to punish whoever prevents us from our goals and desires. We don t want to look at the ways in which we have perverted your love for us. We treat you as though you are a puppet who will dance to our demands. We act like spoiled children who want everything immediately, and who will become sullen and spiteful if we don t get what we ask
3 for. We stopped listening to you. Systems of greed and injustice replaced your command to "love one another". And now we come to you, asking for forgiveness and healing. Our hearts and lives are empty without your love. Our spirits wither and die in this greedy wasteland. Give to us your life-sustaining bread. Heal our souls. Help us to truly worship you and to willingly work for healing and hope in this world. We ask these things in Jesus name, Amen. God s Good News One: God has heard your cries and knows your anguish. In Jesus Christ, you are loved and forgiven. Many: Praise be to God who forgives us all in the name of God s beloved Son! Announcements A Word from the Elders Elder Charles Barber Welcome to our Visitors *Passing the Peace #119, SOZ Do, Lord, Remember Me One: May the peace of Christ be with you! All: And also with you! WE EXPERIENCE GOD'S WORD Children s Message Response #304, Hymnal Me! Jesus Loves Invitation to the Offering Freely we have received. Thus, we freely give: grace upon grace. Offertory William Hymes, Jr.
4 *Doxology #592, Hymnal Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" *Prayer of Dedication O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! We bow before you and thank you for the privilege to participate in your acts of kindness and love here on earth. May these gifts truly become instruments of your purposes here in our church, our community, and around the world. Amen. Anthem William Hymes, Jr. Prayer for Illumination God, we trust that you have our best interests in your heart. As we hear the reading of your Word, remind us that we have been raised with Christ, and inspire us to seek the things that are above, through the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen. Scripture Readings: Psalm 130 pp. 500, Pew Bible 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33, pp , Pew Bible One: This is the Word of the Lord. Many: Thanks be to God! Sermonic Selection Message William Hymes, Jr. Rev. Nancy Thornton WE RESPOND TO GOD S WORD * Song Affirmation #172, Hymnal My Shepherd Will Supply My Need Pastoral Prayer The Prayer Jesus Taught p. 16, Hymnal WE GO FORTH TO LOVE AND SERVE GOD AND NEIGHBOR *Hymn #536, Hymnal Lord, Make Us More Holy *Charge and Blessing
