1 The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost Immanuel Lutheran Church September 3, :00 a.m. Divine Service This Sunday concludes our Summer of Joy. No matter what emphasis on joy we have found in the readings this summer, one overarching theme stands out: there is joy in being a Christian. This is not a joy the world understands, because it is a joy that endures amid suffering. Just as Jesus, for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross (Heb. 12:2), so do we by the Spirit s power own the same joy. Jesus told us it would be this way. After St. Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, our Lord began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised (Matt. 16:21). The faithful prophets, such as Jeremiah, also suffered persecution and rejection in anticipation of Jesus cross. Yet the Lord did not abandon them; He remembered them, and He was with them to deliver them (Jer. 15:15 20). By His cross, Jesus has redeemed the world, and in His resurrection, He has vindicated all who trust in Him. Thus, the Christian life is a discipleship of self-sacrificing love. This is the joy of the Christian: by the certainty of His cross and resurrection, we rejoice in hope, and we are patient in tribulation and constant in prayer (Rom. 12:12). We rejoice in sharing the love. 6 PRAYER REQUESTS: The family of Bob Seiler Bob went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, August 23; he was 75 years old. A Memorial Service was held Monday, August 28, here at Immanuel. We continue to pray for Jean and family as they mourn his passing and exalt in his heavenly ascension. The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 7 YOUTH MINISTRY BACK TO SCHOOL ROLLER SKATING Sunday, September 10 from 1:30 5:30 p.m. Cost is $9/person plus spending money if you would like snacks/drinks. Price includes your choice of regular or inline skate rental. Open to all 7 th through 12 th graders, invite a friend. You must sign up at WINGS on Wednesday, September 6 th, so we can be prepared with enough chaperones. Join us for some fun as we celebrate the start of a new school year! NEW LUTHER MOVIE to be shown September 12 th on TV OETA, the PBS broadcasting service serving all of our state, will show the twohour movie at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Too often when we give our offering to support Immanuel, we don t think of that as giving to missions. Over the course of next year, we want to make you aware of what missions you are supporting as you return your gifts to the Lord. I think most of us will be surprised to realize the lives being touched and the ministries being supported through your generosity. The first mission we will highlight is one very close and dear to us, Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy. Did you know that we support the school by covering: building insurance, the gas and electric bills, and security for the buildings; a cost savings to the school of over $45,000 per year. This does not include the work that Carrie Ann Swaim does running summer camp, Todd Stevens does providing IT, and Temo and Pancho do providing maintenance. Along with this, we give a portion of Immanuel s tithe back to the school, $48,000 per year. Being able to support the Academy in this manor allows them to use their funding for teachers salaries, equipment, and other things. When you see those children s faces, and hear about the things they are doing in school, know that you have made this possible by giving to the mission of the Lord s church.
