2 NURSE'S NOTES FROM THE PARISH NURSE Eye Disorders - "If those who look could see " Cataracts - More than half the people over age 65 have some degree of cataract development. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults. "Seniors suffering poor vision have shown evidence of a premature mental decline in a study out of the U of TX Medical Branch in Galveston". Is that an example of "if you don't use it you lose it"? The real issue may be that if something is not within our ability to perceive it, by whatever sensory method, we cannot respond to it. If we cannot respond appropriately to a stimulus other persons may see that as a problem of mental perception rather than a problem of sensory perception. (It's hard to respond to information if you don't get the information). (Are you still with me?) Vision loss caused by cataracts can be easily treated. Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery in the US. More than 90% of the people who have cataract surgery regain useful vision. Glaucoma - Nearly three million people have glaucoma but half do not realize it because there are often no warning symptoms. By definition, glaucoma is an increased intraocular pressure. Fluid is constantly being produced & drained away from inside the eye. When the drainage is compromised & pressure builds up, the pressure put on the optic nerve at the back of the eye causes "cupping" of the disk where vessels enter the eye causing them to "kink" thereby failing to do their job of nourishing the eye. The peripheral area suffers first resulting in decreasing peripheral vision. Because we respond to central vision the most, loss of peripheral vision can go unnoticed as it happens gradually. Macular Degeneration - Age-related macular degeneration (A-RMD) is a deterioration of the macula, also called "the spot of best vision". The macula is a very small area but is much more sensitive to detail than the rest of the retina. The retina is the layer of nerves that receive the images coming into the eye. Symptoms of may include blurred vision, dark areas or distortion in the area of central vision, and perhaps permanent loss of central vision. For example, the outline of a clock may be visible but not the face, making it impossible to tell the time. There are 2 types of A-RMD, dry & wet, the dry being the most frequently occurring but least damaging type. Careful monitoring of the central vision for any changes is important & changes reported to an ophthalmologist as it can change into the more damaging form called "wet" macular degeneration. Once changes are noted, vision in both eyes should be monitored frequently as there is a risk it will develop in the other eye. Symptoms of the wet form of the disorder usually appear & get worse more quickly. Detached retina - Behind the retina is a layer of blood vessels that nourish the nerves making up the retina. Without their blood supply, nerves die quickly. So, a "detached retina" is a medical emergency. Revelation 21:4 - God will wipe every tear from their eyes; there shall be an end to death & to mourning & crying & pain. Getting to Know Your Deacons - Wendy Beals Wendy Beal's mother, Allie Kinnaird, received a lovely gift on Christmas Eve as she welcomed a beautiful baby girl that they named Wendy. Years later, Wendy met husband Ray through a mutual friend. She is the mother of Chad, 24, Tyler, 20, who is our Sunday custodian, and a Hmong boy, Pheng, 25, who hangs out at their house most of the time! Although Wendy was born in Sacramento, she has also lived in Idaho, Montana and Alaska. Wendy is a very busy person and a hard worker as she holds down two jobs. She is a nurse and loves helping and taking care of people. She also works at Ikea where she keeps merchandise replenished. At Northminster, you will not find a more mission-minded member. In the 8 years that Wendy and Ray have been there, Wendy has gone on most of the mission trips and even went to Nicaragua using her nursing skills. She has accompanied the youth group on their mission trips, served as VBS nurse, counted offering donations, helped to prepare meals for NOW and is a member of the Mission Committee. Presently, as a deacon responsibility, she is in charge of sending birthday and get-well cards, bringing joy to our church members. Last year, she headed up a very successful "Day of the Lord", which was a day set aside for Bible study, prayer, fasting, and service both at the church and in the community. One of her most memorable experiences at NPC is seeing Pastor Jack and Ray dressed as trappers as they taught the kids at Sutter's Fort. What do you have in common with Wendy? Well, check out her favorites to see if they are also yours! Wendy loves Christian and country music, books by James Patterson, Nora Roberts and Terri Blackstone. (The last book she read was "Courageous"). She likes to go walking, watch the 49ers, work puzzles, read, crochet and do crafts. She obviously loves going on mission trips and helping others to become independent. Her favorite color is green or purple, season is fall, snack is chocolate and cookie is peanut chocolate chip. Family time is spent watching TV programs, going on hikes or playing with animals. Time with friends might be spent just visiting or trying different eating places. On a sunny day she would like to be surrounded with air conditioning, but on rainy nights give her a cabin in the woods! She'd walk two miles for exercise and she is ready to go anywhere God sends her. Wendy is a big animal lover - especially cats and dogs. How can you not help but love Wendy, a woman of God, who in her quiet way is so ready to work with all ages of people in any setting to bring help, independence, joy and love. Take a moment to thank Wendy for her devotion and service to our church and our Lord.
3 Stewardship & Evangelism June 20, 2012 Stewardship Stew (The latest tidbits of tasty morsels on stewardship) Per Capita funding is how Presbyterians mutually share the operating expenses of the governing bodies at the local (i.e., presbytery), regional (i.e., synod), and national (i.e., general assembly) levels. Per Capita funding is a fundamental way in which all of the nearly 11,000 congregations and governing bodies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are connected and participate in the work of the wider church. Per Capita funding pays the administrative costs that enable the Presbyterian Church (USA) to perform our evangelism and mission activities. The Westminster Confession says, "all believers, are therefore, under obligation to sustain the ordinances of the Christian religion where they are already established, and to contribute by their prayers, gifts, and personal efforts to the extension of the Kingdom of God throughout the whole earth" (6.058). For 2012, the per capita cost is $22.25 for the Sacramento presbytery. Each congregation in the presbytery is obligated to pay to the presbytery $22.25 for each member of their congregation. Thus, for a family of four, Northminster pays $22.25 if only one parent is a member, $44.50 if both parents but neither child is a member, or $89 if both parents and both children are members. In order to help balance our 2012 budget, your Stewardship and Evangelism committee is asking each member of our congregation to pay his/her part of our per capita obligation. Please use the blue Per Capita Apportionment envelope in your box of giving envelopes if you have one. If not, please use any envelope and clearly write "per capita" on it. In this difficult economy you may want to pay the per capita for someone who can't afford to do so Do you have expertise making video recordings? Your Stewardship & Evangelism (S&E) committee is forming a small team (3-5 people) to document the use of our time and talent in our many Northminster ministries. We are seeking people who are experienced, available, and interested in making short video recordings of representative activities of the many groups (e.g., quilters, Sunday school classes, Souper Seniors, Brown Baggers, hunger committee, youth and adult mission trippers, etc.) who carry out our ministries. Of course, we will continue to record (through video recordings and still photos) our major ministry activities (e.g., N.O.W., Easter events, VBS, Music Camp, youth service, Advent events, etc.) We plan to use these recordings to create one or several DVD's like we used during our October small group meetings in 2009 and 2010, and probably for other publicity as well. If you are interested in being on this team, please contact Dave Yagel, or Debbie Smith in the church office. You needn't have video recording equipment, but if you do, please let us know. May 30, Pope Ave Dear Pastor Raymore and the Congregation of Northminster Presbyterian, What a dazzling surprise on Tuesday morning! Our campus has been transformed by your generous volunteerism. The Starr King staff, students and parents thank you so very much for the beautiful plants, hard work and kindness that you have extended to us. The changes are startling and such a welcome delight from the overcrowded mishmash of plants we had. The appearance is clean, neat, tidy and open. We cannot wait to see all the roses bloom in front around the marquee. And what a change to the first and second grade patio! Starr King K-8 School was built in 1956 and as with many older structures we are slowly making structural and aesthetic improvements. This just gave us a huge boost. Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Fondly, Janice Bowdler Principal
4 The counselors know him as a "yellow," the smallest of our Vacation Bile School campers. Yellows are pre-schoolers and are at Vacation Bible School for the very first time. They sit in the front row, and we are quiet around them, not screaming our cheers like, "I scream, you scream, we all scream for lime green!" They are tender little ones, and we are gentle around them. One of our yellows loved the super hero theme of VBS this year. Each day, a new super hero would arrive in our pantheon of champions, and on Wednesday, both Superman and Spiderman made their first appearance. Our little yellow was beside himself! He couldn't believe that both of his super heroes were there, big as life, right in front of him. When you are four, costumed counselors like Steve Albonico and Chris Brown don't exist. This was the real deal, Superman and Spiderman right there in front of him. Could life be any better? We focused on super heroes this year, and each day our super heroes led us into a real life story of relationships. Those real life problems were then solved by listening to super heroes in the Bible that had faced a similar situation. So we learned about a sister saving the life of her brother with the Exodus story of Moses and Miriam. We learned about how a mother helps her child be all that he can be in the story of Hannah and Samuel. We learned about friendship and how friends have your back in the stories recorded in Samuel about David and Jonathan. And, on the last day, we learned about mentors and how Naomi mentored Ruth into a whole new life. And it was here that our super hero counselors shared their mentors, men and women from our Church who have built a relationship with our teenagers: Sue Ann Lehmkuhl, Peggy Prior, Debbie and Jeff Smith, Sheree Banez, Nancy Seymour, Richard Cable, and Larry Mustain. If we had had the time, so many more of you would be mentioned as mentors. It is a unique and special gift of this precious congregation, mentoring our young people. And Vacation Bible School was mentoring at its best. Adults mentoring high school and college youth, older teens mentoring younger ones, counselors mentoring campers. Sharing our faith in Jesus Christ. Mentoring love like Christ taught us. Vacation Bible School comes about as close to the kingdom of God as you can get. And everyone, from our Chair Millie Payne, on down was and is a super hero in my book. Thank you for being like Jesus mentoring our little ones. Because, in the end, we are all children of God, we are all a little "yellow" in His sight! In The Bread And Wine, WHO S WHO IN THE PEW We have more graduation news! Judy Simpson s granddaughter, Laura Seely, graduated Magna Cum Laude was from Western State University in Design and Marketing and is in the exciting interview process with Eddie Bauer. Dorothy and Jim Blodgett met while they were both students at WSU! Judy and Charlton also flew to Washington last week to attend the graduation of their grandson, Mark Seely. Mark is quite the track star, recently placing 6th in the State finals. He will be attending Western Washington University and majoring in Plastics Engineering. Sue Ann Lehmkuhl s granddaughter, Courtney, garnered the highest scholarship from William Jessup University, the Distinguished Scholar Award. Courtney was graduated with an off the charts GPA and received the Truckee Soroptimists Award. Courtney served on the Vice Squad of Truckee, volunteering with the Mayor and the Chief of Police, played on the Tennis Team for 4 years, and is an incredible portrait artist. Hats off to Nancy and Bert Seymour who took their whole clan to Washington DC this week. Daughter, Jean, and her family, son, David, and of course the Brown family, Steve, Carol, Joe and Peter. Judge Seymour has it planned down to the second and I think they are going to every museum in DC.all 2000 of them! On the international travel scene this summer is Millie Payne s granddaughter, Sophie, who is studying in Italy all summer. Stan and Kay are immensely proud of daughter, Katherine, who graduated Summa Cum Laude last year and is traveling in South America. Katherine has now learned Spanish in addition to French! And, Keele Shaw will be leading an immersion and service trip for high school students to Nicaragua this summer. And here's some great baseball news! Jesse Smith played left field for the El Camino Eagles and his team won their division, and went on to play in the section championship game. Jesse is playing for the El Camino Legion team and the Sharks Babe Ruth team this summer in anticipation of his senior year. His baseball glove has Philippians 4:13 stitched into it, "I can do all thing in Him who gives me strength!" Pastor Jeanie

There were 5 recipients in The 2012 Crop Walk is on October 7th, starting on the south side of the Capital (not the west like in years past). Our Brown Bag Program will be a recipient again this year. The 2012 Walk will be in memory of the Crop Walk Committee Chair of 2011, Diane Rebuenstein. JUNE GRADUATION BRUNCH Gratitude for the Graduate Brunch on June 3. The outpouring of love is greatly appreciated by Taylor Tague, her parents, and grandparents John and Peggy Prior. Many thanks to all who planned the event and to Pastor Jeanie for the memories expressed and to Sheree Banez and Dean Masias for the grand buffet brunch! BLOOD DRIVE COMING TO NORTHMINSTER OCTOBER 28, 2012 MEMORIAL DONATIONS The Al & Eleanor Danker Fund ACOLYTES On Pentecost Sunday, Stephanie Saunders and I honored all acolyte children, following a wonderful Pentecost lesson, by presenting thank you cards to all and sending them home with candles that would re-light. (Stephanie had set up a wonderful refreshment table with Pentecost colors.) We believe all fourteen children who serve as acolytes realize the importance of bringing in the light to the people of God. The children feel needed and are proud of their service. It is also a good outreach program for the parents to see their children valued as participants in this sacrament. Element acolytes, grades 7 12, are in the process of being trained to serve on Communion Sunday with the elders and deacons. The element acolytes follow the young acolyte who brings in the light of God. Following the exploring of scripture describing Jesus with his disciples at the Last Supper, the youth are then prepared to carry into the sanctuary the pulpit Bible, the symbolic cup, and the bread plate. The Sacristy is visited prior to the beginning of worship. The vision of this service to God is to incorporate our youth into the worship service, especially on Communion Sunday Shalom, Peggy CENTSABILITY TOTAL FOR JUNE $10.10
