2 REFLECT In an on-demand society, it's not always easy to imagine life with less. The crowds of Jesus' day depended on the weather and successful growing seasons for their livelihood. For many of Jesus' listeners, even "food that perishes" would have been a welcome relief. Jesus acknowledges this but tries to draw them deeper. "You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." For people who have just witnessed a miracle, their response is strangely marked by ingratitude. "What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert." Jesus fed them for one day, but Moses interceded with God for 40 years of bread. "Jesus," they seem to say, "can't you just give us more?" How often do we behave similarly in the spiritual life? "If I only I had more patience, then I could be kind to her." "I could be welcoming if I was more outgoing, but that's just not me." "I know I'd be a better parent if I just had more time." Like the crowds, we want Jesus to give us more. We always don't want him to completely shift our paradigm. Perhaps it's not "more patience" we need, but a deeper sense of our own imperfections for a greater sense of empathy. Maybe God is inviting you not to entertain an entire group, but to seek out the quiet person on the fringe. And time may limit you from family engagement, but could God be asking you to reorder your priorities entirely? After all, it wasn't more loaves that the people needed. Jesus is "the bread of life," who sustains our most essential needs. This week, are you looking for more or are you looking for God Himself? 2018 NATIONAL DIACONATE CONGRESS Deacon Vince and his wife Nell attended the 2018 National Diaconate Congress in New Orleans from July with 1,300 other deacons and their families from around the country. The theme of the Congress was: Christ the Servant - Yesterday, Today and Forever and offered deacons and their wives the opportunity to celebrate the various aspects of diaconal ministry, and to recall and remember the journey thus far and to envision the path to the future. The Congress heard from several high-profile U.S. bishops, including Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Also making major addresses will be Galveston-Houston Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops; New Jersey Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of Newark; New Orleans Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond; Denver Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila and retired Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson, Arizona. In addition to remarks made by the bishops, over 30 workshops were offered, presented by other deacons. The Permanent Diaconate is 50 years old and the result of the Holy Spirit working through the Second Vatican Council. We look forward to Deacon Vince and Nell sharing their experience and knowledge with us! HAPPY HOUSE UPDATE From Fr. Golas I would like to share with you a letter I received from the Haitian Health Foundation: Thank you for your generous gift of $7,500. As you directed, we will use these funds to construct six Happy Houses for vulnerable families in one of the rural mountain villages in greater Jérémie, Haiti. HHF has labored among these poorest brothers and sisters in Christ for over 35 years. During that time, we have constructed several thousand Happy Houses. The typical dwelling in the mountain villages under HHF's umbrella of care is a shack made from cardboard or scraps of wood or rusted metal, with a thatched roof and a dirt floor. The roofs always leak during the rainy season, and these impoverished families have to live in septic mud. The Happy House is like mansion in comparison. It has a poured-concrete foundation, walls made of reinforced cement, a watertight tin roof, shuttered windows, and front and back doors that lock. There are several rooms and a front porch, where families like to gather during the day. Most families have never dreamed of having a home as nice as the Happy House. Construction will take some time. The 2016 hurricane destroyed 80 of the buildings in the Jérémie area, with thousands of others severely damaged and missing roofs. has been making repairs and replacing roofs for the past year and a half. This set us back significantly in building new Happy Houses, and our construction teams are working diligently to catch up. When the six Happy Houses you are so generously providing are completed, we will have photographs taken with the recipients, and send copies to you. There are many houses yet to build, so we ask for your patience in receiving the photos. Thank you for caring and sharing with vulnerable people trapped in poverty. With appreciation, Jeremiah J. We encourage the children of our Parish to take the bulletin home, color the picture, put their name and age on it and place it in the collection basket the following week. We will hang the pictures in the vestibules of Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church. We hope all our younger parishioners will have fun coloring while learning about the Gospel! Thank you to parishioner, Megan Castoldi, for sharing her artistic abilities with our younger parishioners. The St. Bernard School and Little Angels Pre-School page will return on August 26th. Open Enrollment is available for grades K-8 for the school year. 4 BAPTISM Baptism Prep class occurs on the first Sunday of the month after the 10:30 am Mass in the Meeting Room. Monthly Baptisms are scheduled for the 3rd Sunday of each month after the 10:30 am Mass or by appointment.
