2 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS REFLECT Are you ready for a trim? In today's Gospel, we hear the familiar teaching of the vine and the branches. Jesus reminds us that if we remain close to him-living in humility, following God's law, loving our neighbor-we will notice a positive change in our life and the lives of those around us. "Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit." The Holy Spirit is life-giving. He is fruitful. The Spirit of God won't refuse grace to a heart that is open. As we progress through life, learning how to live and love, we grow. Our personalities flower. We discover what it is to be a blessing to others. We also experience lack, loss, and the results of our failures. We know what it is like to "wither" at times, particularly the times when we willingly separate ourselves from Jesus. "Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me." For most of us, this experience of being disconnected and off track generates a desire to return to what is right and good, to return to the vine. But this Gospel is more than "Are you in or are you out?" Even when we remain in God, when we follow Jesus, we are not exempt from the challenge, the pruning. "Everyone that [bears fruit] he prunes." A prudent trim is necessary in the natural world of trees and vines. Dead wood, broken shoots, and diseased branches need to be cut back in order for the plant to bear fruit. Jesus wants us to be healthy! He says as much himself: "By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." Take a look at your life today. Where are you bearing fruit? Where do you need to be pruned? CCD Registrations for students currently enrolled will be going out in the mail over the next few weeks. Please read the cover letter carefully and return a registration form for each student, along with the contact form and payment in the self-addressed stamped envelope found in your packets. Registration sign-ups for NEW CCD students will be announced at a later date. There will be an Open House on Saturday, May 19th at 9:00 am at St. Bernard School, located at 232 Pearl Street, for incoming students in Grades 1-6 who are currently in the Holy Family CCD program. Parents, CCD teachers and all CCD volunteers currently assisting in the Holy Family Religious Education program are welcome and encouraged to attend. CONFIRMATION CLASS: St. Bernard Grade 9 students will meet on April 29th at 6:30 pm in the Meeting Room - Disciple Project Presentation. Holy Family Grade 9 students will meet on April 30th at 7:00 pm in Fr. Kerwan Hall - Disciple Project Presentation. Saint Name Essays, Confirmation Sponsor Certificates and Community Service Hour Forms are due in to Mrs. Chase by May 20th. Grade 9 students will work the St. Jeanne Jugan Carnival May 31st - June 2nd in the Kiddie Land Booth. Please sign up during class. From Fr. John Golas, The Annual Financial and Pastoral Reports are included in this week s bulletin. The report shows positive results for I think it reflects the generosity and commitment of our parishioners. I appreciate the many ways that our parishioners are involved in contributing for the betterment of the Parish and community. I want to thank you for your continued support. The merger process involves many steps, discussions, and decisions about our future. I am pleased to say there is a very positive attitude toward the whole process. It is a process that is necessary for these times and does involve changes of all sorts. I believe this positive outlook will bring about a result that is the best for St. Jeanne Jugan Parish. I would also like to report a change concerning our Religious Education Program that will occur this September. The Saturday morning Religious Education Program (CCD) for Grades 1-6 will be moving into St. Bernard School on Pearl St. This change is brought about because of the merger. The Parish has a facility to accommodate our Religious Education Program. This will provide a savings for our Parish budget. In addition, there will be safety and control in our school since it is our own facility. The school has a strong sense of Catholic identity in the classrooms and other areas. With the school gym available, there will be the opportunity for assemblies, prayer services and other group functions. I am grateful to the Town of Enfield, the Board of Education, and the principal of JFK school for allowing classes to be held in their facility. It was a tremendous help to Holy Family Church. With the merger, there are two churches of the Parish and one St. Jeanne Jugan Religious Education Program in two locations. In the fall of 2018, all Religious Education students in Grades K - 10 Parish wide will be on the same comprehensive curriculum with the same series of text books published by Loyola Press. I would like to commend and thank Beth Chase, the Parish Director of Religious Education and her staff of Nancy Marco and Jane Sutphin for their efforts in organizing this critical area of our Parish life. Finally, I have heard from parishioners in both Churches that one of the Churches is closing. I am not sure where this is coming from but I can say definitively that the merger on June 29th, 2017 involved both Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church. Last June, there were many church closings but not in our Parish. Decisions about how we organize St. Jeanne Jugan Parish are being discussed and considered. There is no plan about closing either Church. As you are aware, the Archdiocese is in a state of transition at the present time. I do not know fully what the future holds. I do know that any decisions to be made for St. Jeanne Jugan Parish will be the result of a collaborative process of our parishioners and pastoral leaders of the Parish. We must continue to focus on our goal of following the Lord Jesus as individuals and as a community and not be distracted by speculation.

3 St. Bernard School & Little Angels Pre-School YOU RE INVITED!!! ANNUAL SBS SPRING AUCTION WITH DINNER AND ENTERTAINMENT On Saturday, May 5th at the St. Bernard School hall, you are invited to attend a buffet dinner catered by Danny's Pizza and an hour of entertainment prior to the live auction, an annual fundraiser for the school. The entertainment features Dave Kane's "Misgivings". Kane is well known regionally for creating the character of Father Misgivings, an Irish Catholic priest, who tells stories and relates his views about growing up and living life as a Roman Catholic. Kane describes his one-man play as "blessings, blarney, belly laughs, and Bingo!" This adults only event begins at 6:00 pm with the show and light appetizers. Dinner begins at 7:00 pm, followed by the Auction from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Tickets are available for $30.00 per person and can be ordered by contacting the school at You will also be making a dinner selection of beef, chicken, or a vegetarian option when purchasing your ticket. We hope to see you there for a fun-filled night! 7TH GRADE LIFE SCIENCE As part of the 7th Grade Life Science Curriculum at St. Bernard School, Ms. Brooke Landry s students participated in their first dissection lab. Students and their lab partners observed and defined the internal organs and structures of their earthworm. A Trinocular Compound LED Microscope was used to view specimens up close. While participating in the lab, students from the lower grades came to observe while the 7th graders explained the steps they were taking during the dissection. 4 BAPTISM Baptism Prep class occurs on the first Sunday of the month after the 10:30 am Mass in the Meeting Room. Monthly Baptisms are scheduled for the 3rd Sunday of each month after the 10:30 am Mass or by appointment. Deadline for applications is May 25, Questions: contact Pat Keck at SBS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP Each year, St. Bernard School presents at least one $ scholarship to an alumni of St. Bernard School who is graduating from high school. This one-time scholarship can be used for tuition or to buy books for their first year of college. Eligible students must be accepted to a 2 or 4 year institution of higher learning and be matriculated in order to apply. Financial need is not a requirement. Applications are due Friday, May 4th and can be found by going to the school website under Resources/Alumni/ Scholarship Opportunities.

ALTAR SERVERS St. Bernard Church and Holy Family Church are looking for a few new recruitments for altar servers. This is a great opportunity for any child in Grade 3 and up to become involved with the Liturgy of the Mass and to give service to their Church. It helps them realize that part of being a member of the Church is to participate fully in the Liturgy. We are setting up a time to meet with the children who are interested.
