Dear Friends, One month ago we set out on a conversation about Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations, and what a fruitful conversation it has been! Perhaps 150 people took part in the nine discussion groups and/or read the Five Practices book by Robert Schnase and that number doesn t include the senior highs who are just now starting the project, led by Brian Edwards. We have gained a common language for the practices that build our strength and vitality as a community of faith: radical hospitality, passionate worship, intentional ( on-purpose ) faith development, risk-taking mission and service, and extravagant generosity. What s next?, many have asked. The answer has many parts. Barbara Turley is compiling the observations and ideas gathered in each group, and these data will be sifted and considered by the Session. In some form, they will also appear on our website. Some ideas can be readily addressed/ implemented. Seventeen people responded to the volunteer inquiry form on Risk-Taking Mission and Service Sunday, and members of the Mission Committee are responding to each one. Many have expressed an interest in more discussion-based studies: read on in this Tower Tidings to discover a few already! Further developments depend on what we learn from this round. Already the project itself has been fruitful in that so many say that they have enjoyed the small group setting and the chance to enjoy the company of others, talking about topics that matter to our life together. Thank you to all who took part by hearing Sunday sermons, reading the book, and attending a discussion group your generosity is a gift to all of us. I would like to thank the Adult Education Committee, chaired by Kathy Cable, for their enthusiastic dedication to this project. They devoted many hours to prepare for and support it. I also thank all the ruling elders on Session who cheerfully agreed to lead a discussion group. That was new territory for many an example of risktaking service! Finally, Dr. Rice jumped right on his first day, preparing leader guides, writing blogs, and guiding the project thank you! It is a wonderful, spirit-filled time to be a part of Worthington Presbyterian Church if there is a way we staff and leaders can help you take part, please just get in touch with us. Grace and peace, Julia Wharff Piermont STEWARDSHIP 2015: Step In/Step Up as We Step Forward During the month of October, we have presented a different take on Christian giving. Our Stewardship program is not about asking for money to fill out a budget. By highlighting our Youth Ministry and the personal stories of some of your fellow members, we have provided concrete examples of how WPC can have or has had profound effect on people s lives. Financial stewardship helps individual Christians to grow spiritually by enabling the Church to fulfill its call to reach out to others with Christ s transforming love. By now you should have received your pledge card. Please take the time to examine your financial commitment to WPC and then complete the card. Our Stewardship program for 2015 is asking you to Step In to pledging, if you don t already make an annual financial pledge to WPC; or to consider Stepping Up your existing pledge, by prayerfully considering an increase in your giving. This coming Sunday, November 1, will be our Stewardship Celebration. We will first hear an inspirational message from Dr. Tim Shapiro, our guest speaker. We will then take time to make any final decisions on our pledges for 2016 and present them as a gift to God. Finally, we will join in all church celebration, following each service. Let us Step Forward in our faith here at WPC, through our practice of Christian stewardship. If you have children in the Nursery or in Sunday School and you plan to depart immediately after the service, please pick-up your children in the Nursery or in their Sunday School classroom. If you are staying for the celebration in Fellowship Hall, please note: the 2 & 3 year olds will be transferred to the Nursery and all other children will be transferred to the Youth Room. Therefore, please pick-up your children in these locations when you depart. CURIOUS ABOUT MEMBERSHIP? Do you want to learn more about the history and heritage of the Presbyterian Church? Join us at the Membership Seminar on Sundays, November 1 and November 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel. Participants will get acquainted, explore Presbyterian beliefs and practices, and learn about opportunities for mission and ministries of our church. Anyone interested in joining the church will then be received on November 15. Contact Dr. Rice at trice@worthingtonpresbyterian.com if you have questions.

INSTALLATION SERVICE FOR DR. RICE World-renowned Biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann will be preaching at our church on Sunday, December 6 at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Brueggemann has written hundreds of articles and dozens of influential books, including The Prophetic Imagination and Praying the Walter Brueggemann Psalms. An ordained United Church of Christ pastor, he is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia (where he taught Dr. Rice in the Doctorate in Ministry program). The Reverend Dr. Thomas F. Rice will be installed as our Pastor for Discipleship, and a reception will follow in Fellowship Hall. Everybody is welcome! WELCOME OUR NEW DIRECTOR FOR CHILDREN S MINISTRY! Jenni Whitford is coming to us from First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Michigan, where she has been the Director of Christian Education for 15 years. Jenni is a Certified Christian Educator in the Presbyterian Church (USA) comparable to a Master s level of training and studies in Christian Education. Her responsibilities have included overseeing a mid-week program for children, a preschool, Vacation Bible School, and Sunday School programs, as well as training and supporting over 100 church teachers and volunteers. She has a gift for connecting with children of all ages and teaching the Good News in both her words and her ways. The search committee was unanimous in calling Jenni. She will begin working here on Sunday, November 22, and you can greet her after the 10:00 worship service that morning. Contact Jenni at jwhitford@worthingtonpresbyterian.com. BIBLE STUDY COME TO THE WATERS On Thursday, November 5, Christian Life Circle will meet in Room 222 at 12:15 p.m. for sack lunch fellowship, dessert and coffee, 12:45 for business meeting and 1:15 Bible Study led by Pastor Tim Jones. The lesson is #3 of our study book, "The Absence of Water -- Thirst and Longing". The focus is on our life's dry spells, when our bodies and our souls thirst. How do we survive such times of little or no water? The text is Exodus 17; Psalms 42 and 63; John 19:28. We look forward to seeing you when you "Come to the Waters". SPIRITUALITY OF THE PSALMS Join us for a three-week series on Sundays November 8, 15 and 22 nd at 11:30 a.m. We will be discussing the book, Spirituality of the Psalms, by Walter Brueggemann. It s a short book that will deepen your understanding and spiritual connection to the Psalms. You can purchase the book yourself or contact Dr. Rice at trice@worthingtonpresbyterian.com. The church BRIDGE GROUP will meet Friday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Rod and Juanita Harrison. Please call the Harrisons at by November 15 to make reservations. The whole congregation is invited to an Adult Christian Education Series. Join us on Wednesday, November 4, 11, and 18 at 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary. We ll be learning about the history, theology, and Biblical background of marriage, led by Dr. Piermont and Dr. Rice. Members of Session will be present (and participating) as we listen to one another and learn together about the meaning and gift of marriage, and as we look at what this says to us about the issue of same-gender marriage. Everybody is welcome! DRUGS IN THE SUBURBS How prevalent is the abuse of prescription and illegal drugs in Worthington and surrounding suburbs? What are current "drugs of choice" and what are their effects on the body? How can we dispose of unused prescription drugs safely? Officer Tammy Floyd of the Worthington Police Department will address these issues and more in her informative program to raise community awareness. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. This evening program is presented by Presbyterian Women United and all men and women are invited. So plan to join us in. Fellowship Hall on Tuesday, November 17 th! Dessert and coffee will be served at 6:30 p.m., followed by our speaker at 7:00 p.m. Please sign-up on the sheet provided just outside Fellowship Hall.

YAHAS POTLUCK & PERFORMANCE Please join the YAHAs for a POTLUCK and PERFORMANCE BY RON ST. PIERRE on November 6 th in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. (Ron s performance will be at 7:00 p.m.) The YAHAS are members and friends of WPC who are 55 years or older (or wish they were!) Potluck suggestions: Last names A-J: Entrees such as a bucket of chicken, lasagna, or macaroni and cheese, etc. Last names K-S: Side dish Last names T-Z: Desserts Ron will perform as a spectator commenting on the trial of Captain Henry Wirz, in JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS THE TRIAL OF CAPTAIN HENRY WIRZ, COMMANDER OF THE ANDERSONVILLE PRISON. On November 10, 1865 Captain Henry Wirz, was led to the gallows in the Old Capital Prison yard in Washington. A group of 250 spectators, to whom the government had issued tickets, watched as a hood was placed over Wirz's head and the rope around his neck. Wirz last words reportedly were that he was being hanged for following orders. When the trap was sprung and Wirz was dead, the public felt that justice had been done and the desire for revenge was largely satisfied. Come listen and join in the discussion as one of spectators recounts the trial, verdict and hanging. Ron St Pierre portrays the spectator. A brief question and answer period will follow his performance. We hope you can join us for this very informative event in history. Sign up just outside the fellowship hall if you would like to attend! New and different this year our Hanging of the Greens will be led by our children on Sunday, November 29 (first Sunday of Advent). Advent is our season of preparation for Christ s coming. During the 10:00 a.m. worship service our children will lead us in worship by serving as readers and by hanging the Chrismons (ornaments that are Christian symbols) on the tree in our Sanctuary. Children will then go to Fellowship Hall for Advent activities. Parents should meet their Preschool-6 th grade children in Fellowship Hall after the service. The 2 & 3 year olds should be picked up in their classroom following the service. Plan on attending this special service and please help spread the word! CHOIR PLUS... SHINE! LIVING IN GOD'S LIGHT The CHOIR PLUS program for Kindergarten through 6 th grade children is off to a great start! Abundant thanks to all of the teacher volunteers, music volunteers, kitchen volunteers, WPC staff and youth volunteers who make amazing things happen for our children on Thursday evenings. We also appreciate all those who have signed up as volunteer helpers. For parents of children participating, you may visit the WPC website (Ministries & Programs/Music Ministry/Choir Plus) for upcoming Choir Plus curriculum themes and dinner menus. Reminder... There will be no Choir Plus on October 29, November 26, December 24 and December 31. The children look forward to singing for the first time in worship on November 22! Please contact Amanda Trueman, Interim Children's Ministry Administrator, at atrueman@ worthingtonpresbyterian.com with any questions about the Choir Plus program. Thank you! SUNDAY FUNDAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL! Wonderful things are happening in our Sunday school classrooms. We kick-off our time together with Chapel time, led by Jenn Wilkinson, who teaches us fun songs which include sign language. Then, off to our classrooms we go with our wonderful volunteer teachers... You will find the 2 & 3 year old class singing, dancing and identifying people/places/things included in their Bible story. The Kindergarten class has enjoyed time under a tent in their classroom for their Bible story. An interactive video presentation is a part of each class for the 5 th and 6 th graders for their lessons. You will find pictures of these classroom happenings on the WPC website home page slide show. For parents with children in Sunday school... On November 22, there will be Sunday school for the 2 & 3 year old class and preschool only - all other Sunday school aged children will stay in the service. We are always looking for extra Sunday school volunteers, so please contact Amanda Trueman, Interim Children's Ministry Administrator, at atrueman@worthingtonpresbyterian.com with your interest. Thank you for your support of our Sunday school program!

CHRISTMAS TREE AND GREENERY SALE If anyone is new to our church you may not know that WPC has been one of the original churches which have supported NNEMAP Food Pantry for over 40 years. Last year NNEMAP served 16,000 people with a 3 day supply of food twice a month in the area South of OSU, and several of our members volunteer at the pantry or by breaking down larger quantities of staples for delivery to the pantry. The Christmas Tree and Greenery Sale is a major fundraiser for NNEMAP and funds raised by this sale last year provided one month of financial support. NNEMAP will again sell fresh Fraser Fir Christmas trees, wreaths and roping. These are pre-ordered in November and can be picked up at Meadow Park Church of God on Bethel Road on Sunday, November 29. All greens are cut just a few days before delivery and are extremely fresh. Half the cost of the purchase is a tax deductable donation. There will be a table in Fellowship Hall after the 10:00 a.m. service on November 1, 8, and 15 to answer questions and accept orders. Order forms will also be available in the church office. NNEMAP FOOD PANTRY OPEN HOUSE NNEMAP will hold an open house on Sunday, November 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Come and see NNEMAP s new home, the amazing Philip Martin mural, meet the new Assistant Director and enjoy light refreshments. NNEMAP is now located at 677 East 11 th Avenue in Columbus, which is at the corner of 11 th Avenue and Essex Street. HARMONY FOR HUNGER Please plan to attend Harmony for Hunger, a benefit concert for the NNEMAP Food Pantry. The concert will be held on Friday, November 13 th at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark s Episcopal Church. The church is located at 2151 Dorset Road in Upper Arlington. Top talent from the many churches that support NNEMAP will be performing, including soloists, quartets, and instrumentals. Featured performers will be The Ohio State Glee Club under the direction of Dr. Bob Ward. Chris Bradley, Chief Meteorologist at WBNS, Channel 10, will host again. A silent auction will also be held. Tickets are $15 and are available at the NNEMAP table in Fellowship Hall after services on November 1 and 8 and at the door the night of the concert. THANKSGIVING DINNER Calling all pilgrim helpers! Our Mission Committee will again be purchasing and assembling Thanksgiving dinners for those in need in the Worthington School District as well as Salem and Hamilton Elementary Schools in Columbus. Last year we delivered 202 meals. We are so thankful for your support. WPC is truly following the Lord s word of feeding the hungry. We will be collecting money (any amount) in the Fellowship Hall, before and after the 10:00 service from November 1 thru November 22, but we will accept donations through November 24. Each dinner costs $ We will be assembling on the 23 rd, and delivering on the 24 th. Last year families helped assemble, and what a fun time we had! Please keep in mind this incredible project for your November monthly planning. Sponsor-A-Family is looking for help sponsoring families in need this Christmas Season. This year there are some changes. Worthington Schools is asking that gift cards be given in lieu of gifts. Cards from Toys R Us, JC Penney, Kohl s, Target, Kroger, Meijer and Walmart would be greatly appreciated. They are also requesting the gift cards by November 23 rd so families can shop. Because of this, gift cards will be collected in Fellowship Hall on Sunday the 22 nd following worship services. In addition, there will still be opportunities to sign up to shop for a family or buy needed household items by coming to Fellowship Hall following worship services on the following Sundays: November 22 nd, 29 th and December 6 th. Sunday December 13 th all gifts will be collected. Many families will benefit from your generosity. More details will be provided at the sign up tables in Fellowship Hall. God bless you for your help! Please contact Mindy Steel at bob-mindy@ sbcglobal.net or call with any questions or if you would like to volunteer to help.

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS Christmas is the season of giving, in remembrance of the Christ Child, God s greatest gift to us! You can help spread Christ s Love throughout our hometown, across the country and around the world by shopping at our annual Alternative Christmas Market on December 6, 13, and 20. It s the perfect way to honor a friend, teacher, relative, neighbor or anyone on your gift list! Want a great gift for your child to give to his grandparent? How about a chick for one dollar? How about giving a pig to a needy family in Africa? See the order form is in this issue and join us in the Fellowship Hall between services on December 6, 13, and 20. PRESCHOOL NEWS October at the Preschool has been full of fun and excitement! The children and families have enjoyed being outside in the fresh fall air. Early in the month our preschoolers had the joy of sharing a Children s Moment with Pastor Tom Rice and Brian Edwards! Two of our class rooms had a walking field trip to the Worthington Library. All of our classrooms invited Grand Pals to join them in the class room for a short visit followed by a delicious reception in Fellowship Hall with cookies. Our Preschool along with 3 other local preschools hosted an evening presentation by Yvonne Gustafson titled Guiding Your Child to Social and Emotional Well Being which was attended by over 50 parents of preschoolers. At the end of the month all of our preschoolers will get to participate in Halloween Fun Days with costumes and unique snacks which should be a treat! November will be a busy month for us while we take a field trip to the Worthington Library and have our first Parent/Teacher conferences. We will also celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday by talking about sharing, giving, and thankfulness! GROOMING KITS THANK YOU! We reached our goal of 300 large deodorants to NNEMAP for the annual grooming kit drive. Presbyterian Women United collected and delivered 340 deodorants to NNEMAP. This annual partnership with many Columbus area churches is a wonderful example of extreme generosity in providing personal items to families in need. Y FAMILY CENTER DINNER HOSTING WPC volunteers provided dinner for approximately 175 moms, dads, kids and grandparents at our September 30 Y Family Center dinner hosting. We had a great group of new and veteran volunteers, which made for an easy evening. A dishwashing machine breakdown gave us a scare but a quick switch to paper and plastic saved the day. Thanks to all who support this vital community service. Together, we help keep the doors open at the Y Family Center. 7 MERRY ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS 2015 Help spread Christ s love across the country and around the world at Christmas time. Last year, our congregation gave more than $13,258 in gifts through the Alternative Christmas program. Please join us in Fellowship Hall on December 6, 13 or 20 to learn about the wonderful projects you can help locally and around the world. You may use the order form on the reverse side to select the gifts you want. Order forms, with checks payable to Worthington Presbyterian Church (Alternative Christmas in the memo), may be dropped off at the church office prior to December 20 or between services in Fellowship Hall on December 6, 13 or 20. GIFT CHOICES COMPASS: For some families, unexpected medical bills or child-care problems are enough to send them into a shelter or worse, out on the streets. Most social service programs are not designed to deal with such sudden short-term issues. In central Ohio, COMPASS provides aid quickly to keep people from losing their homes because of temporary setbacks. The Mid-Ohio Food Bank: Most people don t realize the staggering impact hunger has in central Ohio. Soaring food prices and high unemployment mean too many families go to bed hungry. Blessings in a Backpack: Help supply food to school-aged children in need over the weekends when they do not receive Federal Assisted lunches. Heifer International: For over 60 years Heifer International has worked to bring healing and hope to millions around the world. Heifer works in areas of livestock and agriculture to develop programs that alleviate hunger and poverty. The livestock and training helps poor communities survive. Montaña de Luz: The Mountain of Light orphanage in Honduras is home to children with HIV/AIDS. This is a special place where children can receive the safety, love, nutrition and medicine they deserve. Your gift will help provide nutritious food, medical care and education. Healing Art Mission: This mission focuses its work in Haiti, providing services to some of the world s most destitute people. Healing Art Mission supports a medical clinic and a school, making a difference for thousands of people in and around two Haitian villages. Bethany House in South Africa: Bethany is a safe haven for abused women and their children in Johannesburg, South Africa. Because of the spiraling violence in South Africa, these women are desperate for help. This home can accommodate up to 55 women and children for approximately 6-14 months. Your gift will help provide shelter and counseling to these women and their children. Bibles for Romanian Christians: In post-communist Romania there are many small Christian churches growing in remote villages. The economy in Romania limps along and most churches are unable to provide Bibles for their members. Your donation will help distribute Romanian printed Bibles to those families who seek the word of God. Pal Craftaid: Rooted in the peace and justice work of the Presbyterian Church USA since 1993, Pal Craftaid has been an all-volunteer, non-profit ministry of compassion, hope and healing for Palestinians. Olive wood and embroidered handcrafts made by artisans in the West Bank and Gaza will be available for purchase.
