The observance of Lent began as a part of the preparation new believers received for their baptism on Easter day. Our modern observance of Lent has evolved as a time of spiritual reflection and repentance in the truest form a turning away from what separates us from God and a turning towards the new life we have in Christ. Our Ash Wednesday service will start at 7:00 p.m. on March 5 in the Sanctuary. The service will include an imposition of the ashes for all who would like to receive this traditional sign of sorrow and repentance.

2 INTERIM ASSOCIATE PASTOR MESSAGE Reverend Charlotte O Neil At the January meeting of the Membership and Fellowship Ministry part of our discussion focused on the practice of hospitality and how we might welcome each other and especially visitors on Sunday morning. As the conversation became more focused on greeting people at the entrances to the sanctuary, someone in our group exclaimed, I can do that! I am a born greeter! Many times in the church we can all agree that something should be done but finding people to carry out our ideas can be a little more challenging. Maybe the problem isn t what we are asking for but rather how we ask. Maybe the question is about finding someone who is called to do the very thing that we need. Frederick Buechner, a Presbyterian minister, describes God s call as the place where your deep gladness and the world s deep hunger meet. In other words God calls us to those places where we can use our own gifts to meet the world s needs. I find that when I discover the gifts that God has given to me and use them to build up the community or reach out to others with hospitality and love, that is where I most strongly feel God at work in my life and in the lives of others. It is unfortunate that we usually see God s call in the big picture sense. God calls each of us every day in a multitude of different ways to use the gifts we have for the good of others. And the fact is that God needs all of our individual and unique gifts both in the church and in world. Your gift may not be a born greeter with the gift of hospitality. But all of us have extraordinary gifts to share; gifts that God has given us and is calling us to use within the community we know as the Worthington Presbyterian Church; gifts the church needs to carry out its mission and ministry. Where can your deep gladness and the world s deep hunger meet? Where is God calling you in our common ministry? Imagine two scenarios first, you have arrived at an unfamiliar, rather large building, and, upon entering, realize you are on your own to find your way around. Then, imagine a second scenario, where you arrive at this rather large, perhaps a little intimidating building, and you are met at a door by a greeter who warmly welcomes you, expresses pleasure that you are there, and cheerfully helps you to find your destination. Now, think of these two scenarios in terms of a church home. What message does each scenario send to the perplexed visitor? If you were a visitor, or a new member, which scenario would you hope to find? We place a high value on feeling at home here at WPC. We offer each other greetings at the very beginning of our service. We wear name tags and sign the membership pads in an effort to introduce and get to know each other. The Membership and Fellowship Committee would like to go one step further in our efforts to show the friendly, welcoming nature of our congregation. Because we have many entrances to our church, and, on Sundays, not everyone comes through the main (High Street) doors, we d love to put together a list of members who might be willing to come a little early on a Sunday morning and be a greeter to people coming into the building at doors other than the main doors off the Village Green. Ideally we d like to have 3 people per Sunday at various entrances. If you might be available to help WPC put its very best foot forward, even before Sunday worship begins, please contact me or Susan Marvin in the church office ( ). We have a wonderfully friendly congregation let s show it off!! Dorie Eisenman, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.." ATTENTION YOUTH PARENTS As we begin a new schedule for our sixth and seventh grade Sunday School Class and for our Confirmation Class, there will also be an opportunity for parents to gather with Reverend Charlotte O Neil in the Fellowship Hall for coffee, conversation, food, and study from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on HOSPITALITY Sunday morning. Please come as we share with one another.

3 MISSION The Mission Committee sponsors three major mission projects in which we hope to involve more of our congregation. The plan is for a church member volunteer to serve with members of the Mission Committee to support the Easter Basket mission in April, the Rummage Sale in May and Sponsor-a-Family mission in December. Those who don t have the time or desire to serve on the Mission Committee can help with one short but intense mission. Please call Leslie Snyder at or her at lesliesnyder54@gmail.com if you are interested in finding out more about these commitments. The opportunities for fellowship are a wonderful by-product of getting involved as you serve those in need. We hope to hear from you. MISSION RELATED SCHOLARHSHIPS The Mission Committee has money available for mission related scholarships. Anyone wishing to receive one of these scholarships must: 1. Send a letter of application to the Mission Committee by June 2. Interview with the Mission Committee. These scholarships can be for a variety of mission travel and programming, but do not cover trips to Montaña de Luz, which are covered under a separate policy. Scholarship amounts may vary, and may depend on the number of applications received. In order to encourage the widest possible participation, the Mission Committee will not award a scholarship to the same person for the same program more than once. However, a church member who has received a scholarship for one mission program may apply for another scholarship in a subsequent year if he/she is pursuing a different mission program. 6 th and 7 th Grade Sunday School meets at 9:00 a.m. in Room th and 9 th Grade Confirmation Class at 9:00 a.m. in the Youth Room Senior High Youth Group (Grades 9-12) meets Sundays 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the Youth Room HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOUSE During the most recent Habitat for Humanity House Dedication on January 4, 2014, Keyona Sykes and her daughter received the keys to their new home. Facts about the house: 2,985 volunteer hours to build the home in 60 work days. WPC contributed $6,800 toward the home. WPC members that volunteered approximately 200 hours are Dennis Decker, Jack Dicke, Arnie Ishizuka, Dick Langhout, and Mark Senff. ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS THANK YOU Thanks to all who contributed to the Alternative Christmas Market in December! WPC members bought $889 worth of items from Pal Craftaid, and donated a total of $13,662 to the eight other charities: COMPASS, Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Honor Flight, Montaña de Luz in Honduras, Healing Art mission in Haiti, Bibles in Romania, Heifer International, and Bethany House in South Africa. This is almost a 30% increase over Thank you very much for your generosity!

5 Y FAMILY CENTER: WPC Heroes of Hospitality You may recall that on Wednesday, February 5, Columbus was under a Level 2 Snow Emergency and the preceding days had not been very nice either. Nonetheless, WPC members had committed to providing dinner for up to 300 people seeking shelter at the Y Family Center that night. Many hurdles were placed in the way of the WPC volunteers that day. Some who had offered to serve or provide food could not get out of their driveways or were afraid to drive (rightfully so). When the skeleton crew of servers arrived at WPC, we found the church doors locked up tight (closed for the day due to the Snow Emergency) and the church bus covered in ice and blocked in by a large plow. The food items that had been donated were sitting in the church kitchen, and the key to the bus was locked in the office. A call was placed to the Y Family Center to let them know that we would be late at the very least. Shortly thereafter, the Y Family Center staff called back to say that if we could just get there they would find enough food for us to serve, and in fact had already begun making spaghetti in case we could not access our food items. Just then, another church group arrived at WPC. One of those members had a key to the church and we were able to get inside and get to the food. However, the member did not have a key to the office, so we could not obtain a key to the bus. Two of our volunteers with four-wheel drive SUVs volunteered to transport the crew and food to the Y Family Center. The kitchen staff had spaghetti for 300 well underway, so we saved our cans of ravioli for our next dinner. We served the salad, bread and butter, bananas and milk that had been donated. Two more unexpected volunteers joined us, bringing our total crew count to nine. With perseverance, good camaraderie and more than a little help from the Lord above, we were able to serve the first dinner seating at 5:45 p.m. By the end of the night we had served approximately 250 dinners. Thanks to all the food donors and service volunteers who ventured out into the cold to help others during one of the worst winters in recent history. 6 The Membership and Fellowship Ministry is exploring ways to encourage hospitality and build relationships that support each other in Christian Community. We sincerely invite your opinion on these ideas. We see a need for: Singles events (open to the larger community); Fellowship Hall Greeters after worship; A group that focuses on the recent or almost there empty nesters; New Member Mentors would help new members become engaged with our church and aware of activities to support them and their families. Having name tags accessible and available every Sunday. Name tags would be really helpful to a new minister and to new members. It is a habit that requires your effort to start and maintain. Name Tag Sunday will be in late March, so please try to find your church magnetic name tag. If you want to order one, please contact Susan Marvin at smarvin@worthingtonpresbyterian.com or call the church office at Name tags do convey a sense of community and willingness to be engaged with others. Please drop a note to Membership and Fellowship on any of these ideas, other ideas, or your willingness to help us and drop off your note in the church office. Your voice is important.
