2 FROM THE PASTOR After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do. Acts 13:22 King David If you would like to read ahead about the story of David, you could read 1 Samuel starting at Chapter 8 (or just read all of 1 Samuel!) and then read the whole book of 2 Samuel. The story is fluid and easy to read. Try not to look for so much meaning, just enjoy the story. It s a great work of narrative art! According to scripture, King David was the second king of the united kingdom of Israel. But he was more than just a king. He was God s anointed one to be king, and God established a covenant with the kingdom of Israel through him. The covenant (in 2Samuel 7) was that one of David s descendants would be the chosen as Messiah, or the great leader that would save Israel. The scriptures of Matthew and Luke outline David s lineage and find Jesus as that descendant (through Joseph, interestingly enough.) And we believe that Jesus is the Messiah sent, not just to save Israel, but the whole world. Repeatedly, in the scriptures, Jesus is called, Son of David by those who need help. A recognition of his holiness. The story of David is important to both Jews and Christians. David was a great leader. He was fair, just, kind, a great military leader, a musician (many of the Psalms are credited to David) and a man of deep faith. But he was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. His sin actually takes a prominent place in David s story, and so does God s displeasure, and the consequences of David s actions. But David never loses faith in God, and God never takes his promise away from David. Rev. June Wilkins For six Sundays from July 8 th August 12 th, in worship we will be reading and considering the story of David, its importance to us, and how we can understand it. In our Adult Education time in the Library, in three sessions, on July 1 st, July 22 nd, and August 5 th, Joel Wildermuth will be leading discussions about the story of David. 2
3 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL "God's Good Creation" July 30 - Aug :30pm Our Vacation Bible School program is adapted from ELCA World Hunger's program, focusing on the goodness of God's creation, issues of hunger, hope, and the work to which God calls us to use our gifts and resources to build a world where all are fed. Each evening will begin with a quick family dinner followed by a two-hour program of singing, theater, games, snacks, crafts, and more. All kids ages 2-11 are welcome. Older kids and youth 12+ are invited to sign up as volunteers. Wednesday night will be a cookout in front of the church. All GLC members are invited to join the VBS and food pantry folks for good food, games, fellowship, and music. Volunteer sign-ups and program registration are available in the narthex by the front doors. Contact Mr. Joel with any questions. Please sign up and be ready for three nights of great VBS fun! 3

Its humble origins worry us. Its ancient world view sometimes baffles us. Its claim on our lives challenges us. Encountering God in Scripture is a video series of questions and Bible stories by professors from Luther Seminary in St. Paul MN who help us understand this book as an encounter with the living God. They will lower our anxiety and raise our expectations. Listen as they grapple with questions; then join with these leaders in studies of this amazing story of God's action in the world. 5 THIS & THAT Volunteers Needed To Mow Church Lawn You can sign up for the week(s) of your choice on the sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board across from the church office. A self-propelled lawn mower, gas, and a battery operated trimmer are stored in the garage for your use. It will take about 2 hours to complete. If possible, cut grass on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Questions: Contact Jim Sauer ( ) or Bill Darlage ( ). Inviting and Welcoming The Outreach Ministry Team has completed a well-received outreach program, culminating with care packages being distributed to neighborhood friends and our own college students and homebound. But this program doesn t end with the package delivery. Inviting and welcoming continues year round as Gethsemane members share their stories with all the people they meet. To aid you, we have provided you Gethsemane Welcome Cards. You may receive additional cards from the church office or the Outreach Ministry Team Char Jessie Deidre Spahn Kreig Spahn Bill Darlage Build Up, Reach Out! Facilities Projects The Properties Managers have begun analysis and design work for those projects defined as facilities upgrades/enhancements as part of the Build Up, Reach Out! project. We will initially concentrate our efforts on three major portions of the project: (1) the replacement of the sanctuary cooling system and the controls for the sanctuary heating and cooling systems; (2) the internal security improvements and downstairs kitchen upgrade; and (3) painting of P&L areas. If you have any experience with construction projects, you know that there is a lot of uncertainty in cost, start date, time to completion, and impact upon use of the building. We ask that you be patient with the process and be aware of the potential to cause changes in the way in which we can use the building. If you are planning any kind of activities within the building over the next year to eighteen months, please check with us so that we can try to jointly manage and schedule our work and your activities. We will keep you informed of our progress through monthly updates in The Leaf. 8 PLAY & LEARN Summer Greetings from Play & Learn! It s been a little while since you have heard from us. Our fundraising dinner in April was a huge success. Many thanks to all of you who participated through volunteering, purchasing dinner and raffle tickets, and making donations! With your help we raised over $1,500 to be used to update the playgrounds this summer. A big thanks also to Mr. Puppet who provided another entertaining show for all in attendance! In April we celebrated the Week of the Young Child and had our annual spring concert where the children provided heartwarming musical performances. In May we recognized our mothers with our annual Breakfast with Moms and then our staff with Teacher Appreciation Week. The Kermits pre-kindergartners graduated at the end of May, and although they will be missed at Play & Learn we wish them all the best as they start kindergarten in the fall! In June, our summer program got off to a great start. As the weather permits, we are spending lots of time outdoors. The activities center on fun in the sun and learning from doing and playing. The swimming pools and sprinklers are out for water play fun. Field trips and outings to the area parks are allowing the children to expand their learning environment. In June, we also recognized our fathers with our annual Breakfast with Dads. In July, we are looking forward to Independence Day celebrations and a family picnic lunch. The Play & Learn staff thanks the members and friends of Gethsemane very much for all your continued support and prayers as we continue to have fun teaching and caring for God s precious children. 8
