2 FROM THE PASTOR Guided by the Spirit If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 The Spirit of God has been with us throughout our history. From the beginning, our ancestors of the faith met God in various ways, through disembodied voices, angels, spirits, dreams, visions, and mysterious strangers. These were all given to guide them on their path and let them know that there was one God and that God cared for the people. From June 18 th July 30 th, our worship theme will be Guided by the Spirit. We will be talking about our ancestors introduced in Genesis: Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Ishmael, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Esau, and Joseph. These were the first to know the God of Israel and the first to change their lives based on that relationship. None of these ancestors of the faith were perfect actually they were all very flawed characters who did some crazy things but their willingness to let the Spirit of God guide them and move them through life is admirable. Each week, our seminarian, Joel Wildermuth and I will be taking up a different Genesis story in worship: June 18 Abraham, Sarah, & Isaac June 25 Sodom and Gomorrah July 2 Hagar & Ishmael July 9 The Testing of Abraham July 16 Jacob and Esau July 23 Joseph and his Brothers July 30 Joseph in Egypt I hope you ll join us for this Summer series! Rev. June Wilkins 2
3 LEARN others who prepared the ground before him as well as those who followed after and who took advantage of the new intellectual freedom to question all manner of doctrine and practice. LIFETIME LEARNING Christian Education about life, for life, and for a lifetime SUNDAYS at 10:45 AM Movie Time in the Library Reformation Roots This series on the Reformation features historians who have a passion for the church and its story. They will, along with a host, transport you through one of the most interesting and important periods of church history. This era begins with the church suffering from moral decay and fierce defensiveness and ends with a fracturing of the church into many smaller pieces. Onto this stage come some of the most remarkable characters in history. These reformers carry with them fresh ideas that challenge the stultified thinking of that era as well as recover the deep truths of scripture. The scholars featured in this series will introduce you to the characters and major events while avoiding drowning you in endless details. You will hear the major themes of authority and freedom that are woven throughout and you will learn that both forces, pushed to the extreme, have caused tremendous suffering. Though Martin Luther is credited with being the major force of the Reformation, learners will meet many We live in the post-reformation era when denominations are trying to discover common ground rather than points of disagreements. Many of those earlier areas of disagreement have been resolved through dialogue and statements of agreement. The aim of this series is to help explain the existing landscape of western Christianity and to suggest that some of the unresolved Reformation themes are still in play today.
