Maundy Thursday, March 28, 6:30 pm We share a meal in the Great Hall as we remember Jesus last supper with his friends, then share communion and foot washing with one another. Good Friday, March 29, 7:00 pm A solemn service of prayer, mourning and hope as we gather around the cross. Easter Vigil, March 30, 7:00 pm This is the most ancient worship of the Christian Church. The service begins with a new fire in the darkness and a procession of light. We share the stories of God s salvation from the beginning of time, remember our baptism and share the first Eucharist of the resurrection. Easter Sunday, March 31, 9:30 am Share the joy of the resurrection and Christ s victory over death in this worship celebration! Come early to enjoy the Easter prelude which starts at 9:20. Come join the youth for the annual Easter breakfast starting at 8:00 am Easter morning. The meal is free. Any free will donation will go to youth activities.

STAFF Spiritual Discipline rehearsal. Rehearsing for a performance of any kind helps us to do automatically what we, at first, had to work hard to do. Just like rehearsing, doing spiritual disciplines helps us to do automatically what might be a struggle at first. When we pray we rehearse turning to God with our whole lives our concerns, joys, and our deepest selves. When we fast we rehearse denying our appetites and over-indulgences and not automatically turning to those things that pacify us. And when we give charitably, we rehearse trusting God with our valuable possessions. In the first centuries of the Christian Church, Lent was a time of preparation for those who wanted to be baptized. The days leading up to Holy Week and Easter were chosen, with the baptisms happening at the Easter Vigil on the Saturday night of Easter (Still a great worship service to this day, you should try it if you haven t already!). Those preparing for baptism would be acknowledged by the congregation and they would enter into a 40 day time of prayer, fasting, and charitable giving or almsgiving. Now, instead of preparing a few for baptism, Lent is for the whole congregation to prepare for a re-affirmation of our baptism at the Easter Vigil (Did I mention this was a great worship service?). But the same disciplines are recommended: prayer, fasting, and charitable giving. These disciplines are actual things that we do that help us to re-focus and reorient our lives to God. People in the Western world often have suspicion of spiritual disciplines, preferring to put more of a priority on intellectual pursuits and knowledge. And Lutherans have our own issues with disciplines because we live firm in the understanding that we are not saved by our works (disciplines) and sometimes we refuse to do them just to prove a point. But disciplines are not for salvation, they are more like There are so many activities in our lives, so many distractions, so much that we do (both necessary and unnecessary) and those things take our time and our hearts away from God and Christ. We need activities (disciplines) that help us to put God and Christ back in our daily lives. If you ve already started your discipline for Lent, keep going. But if you haven t done it yet, there are still more than three weeks to start. It s never too late! Rev. June Wilkins On February 17 th at a Special Congregation Meeting, Gethsemane voted in favor of identifying itself as a Reconciling In Christ in Congregation. This is a recognition that we publically welcome lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender believers. With this we can share the welcome we feel inside Gethsemane with those outside Gethsemane. For more information see 2

LEARN March 3 In the first of our three sessions, Prof. Lose (via DVD) will provide a context for considering these questions. We will then examine the four different Gospel accounts of Christ s death and wonder why four seemed necessary and how four such different accounts came to be. LIFETIME LEARNING Sundays at 10:45 AM Christian Education about life, for life, and for a lifetime. Multi-Purpose Room Understanding the Cross March 3, 10, 17 How we should regard the cross is one of the enduring puzzles of the Christian faith. Is it a sad tragedy that we should grieve? Is it the moment of God s victory and redemption that we should celebrate? Is it the place where we stand in awe to see God s incomprehensible love poured out for us? In three sessions we will draw upon a recent book Making Sense of the Cross by David Lose, a well-known faculty member at Luther Seminary, to consider these and other related questions. These are important questions, not only because the cross and resurrection stand at the center of the story of Jesus, but also because the way we understand the cross shapes the way we understand God. Depending on your point of view, the cross may signify God s anger with human sin, God s grief at human waywardness, God s plea for us to return to a right relationship, etc. Although we may understand the cross to be very important, and although remembrance and celebration of our Lord s death and resurrection during Holy Week and Easter may be the center of our Christian year, few of us try to understand what it is, exactly, that we are remembering and celebrating. Or, for that matter, why the cross was necessary in the first place, if, indeed, it was so. March 10 Session two addresses three schools of thought (or theories of atonement) ways in which theologians have historically attempted to make sense of the cross. Very briefly, these are known as Ransom, Substitution/sacrifice, and Example/encouragement. For each we will consider the following four questions: (1) What is the problem? (2) What is the resolution? (3) What is God like in this theory? (4) What does life in Christ look like in this theory? March 17 In the final session we consider (again with Prof. Lose s help via DVD) what it may mean to experience the story of the cross and resurrection. As he sees it, this story is the prime example of a pattern, repeated in multiple Bible stories, of what happens when God gets involved with humans. He argues that experiencing the events of Holy Week and Easter with this pattern in mind may free us to engage in reconciliation and love. Palm Sunday and Easter March 24 and 31 No classes 3

LEARN Gethsemane Reading Group April 24 7:30 pm Lenten Wednesdays Discussion Series on Community Continues in March The five-week discussion series, The Community Within and the Communities Outside Our Walls: What is God s Dream for Gethsemane?, which started February 20 continues each Wednesday at 6:30pm (after a tasty soup supper) until March 20. Members of the Welcoming in Christ Ministry Team and Pastor June are leading the discussions under the session titles The Dream of God, Ways Churches Connect with Outside People: Church Structure and Decision Making, Moving Beyond Fear Connecting Beyond GLC s Doors, Listening to Our Communities, and Can We Discern God s Will for Gethsemane? Our conversation begins with a Biblical foundation and moves on to some introspection about our church and how it works. Next we focus beyond our doors and look at what we are doing in the community, talk about our fears, and listen to a panel discussion featuring community leaders/connectors. The final session will summarize major points of previous sessions and we will try to visualize a future Gethsemane. Come and be a part of this important conversation about Gethsemane and its future. Results will be summarized, submitted to Council and included in a future newsletter. The End of Your Life Book Club Written by Will Schwalbe Discussion led by Carol Prigan You are invited to attend this book discussion group in the library each month or to come when you can. For more information, please contact Sharon Walton ( or skrwalton@gmail.com) or call Barbara Ford ( or bandbford@columbus.rr.com). BROWN BAG BIBLE BASH Is on hiatus during Lent and will resume the Wednesday after Easter. 4

STEWARDSHIP When our income expectations fall short, the amount available to give to our mission partners is less and they suffer as well. And when expectations fall short we can become less willing to take the risks that we need to take to do Christ s ministry. Continuing to Grow God s Garden from the Congregation Council During Lent, we dedicate ourselves to the Spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting and charitable giving. With prayer, we spend time fostering our relationship with God. Each of these things requires self-discipline, but of all of them, charitable giving requires the most trust. When we give, we trust that there will be enough for us, we trust that God will provide, we trust in God s abundance. When we give to a congregation, we also need to trust that the funds we give will be put to good use in God s service and that the rest of the members of the community are doing their share. And we trust that our gift is important and necessary. Giving to a church community like Gethsemane stretches us in faith in God and our trust in others. It is indeed a discipline. As we enter into Lent, your spiritual discipline of giving can also serve the needs of your church community. Six months into our fiscal year, we find ourselves about $10,000 short of where we hoped to be. That amount is not a cause for alarm, but it is a concern. With the 2012/2013 budget, we took some leaps of faith in returning promised hours and benefits to some of our staff, and we have had some expected and unexpected costs come up in other areas. We want to address this concern now while there is plenty of time to correct the trend. We are asking you to consider offering a one time extra gift or to increase your regular giving to Gethsemane as you are able. If you aren t giving regularly to Gethsemane, please consider giving. Even if you think of it as a small amount, all gifts are important. When everyone works together, we will be able to go into the next fiscal year financially sound, eager to take on new challenges and go wherever the Spirit leads us. Money is an odd thing. We know that it is the root of many problems, but we also know that it is necessary in all of our lives. One pastor said that we could think of money as portable love. It is simple to give, it is useful to most everyone, and it can be used almost anywhere in the world. When it is used in its best way, it can be a source of hope and life, it can be a representation of our care for others, and it can be a representation of our gratitude to God. The leadership of Gethsemane thanks you for all you do. The incredible gifts of time, talent, and treasure that our people share make this community the wonderful place that it is! Electronic Giving If you would like to give electronically and have your offering given automatically, you can use the Simply Giving service. Just fill out the Simply Giving envelope (found under the large bulletin board in the narthex) and return it to the church office or to Rick Langner s mail box. If you would like to increase your Simply Giving amount, just fill out another Simply Giving envelope with the new amount. 5

STEWARDSHIP New Roof Installed Perhaps some of you have noticed that the church received a new roof last Fall. The roof over the sanctuary was replaced just four years ago and is doing well, but the roof over the rest of the building ranged in age from 18 to 22 years. The youngest section of that the roof over the Great Hall had already been repaired two years ago and was again in need of additional repairs. The roofing company advised us that the best course would be to completely replace the year old portion before the winter season. And the council decided it was best to do just that. We are certainly grateful that Play and Learn is doing well enough under the leadership of our Day Care Board and its director, Brenda Weilbacher, that they could contribute to the necessary repair! If you would like to help fund future capital improvements for Gethsemane and help us to replenish our reserve funds for future expenses, please consider making an extra contribution toward our general operating fund. The question which remained was how to pay the $40,000 cost. Budgets over the last number of years have included $10,000/year for Capital Improvements. If we continued to set aside that amount each year, we could afford the roof in 4 years, except inflation would probably add another $4,000 to the cost and we would still need to make some repairs this year at additional cost. The idea of doing a special member appeal for the roof was considered, but we decided to use other means afforded to us. In the end, Play and Learn generously contributed 25% of the cost, and the entire remaining cost was paid for with money from Gethsemane s various accounts. This meant we did not have to borrow from an outside source and pay interest. If you have further questions about the accounting process, please ask our treasurer, Rick Langner. While the special appeal was not pursued, in the very least, our leadership realizes that we should have given the congregation notification of such a large capital improvement and the opportunity to contribute additional funds to the expense. We promise to do a better job in the future of informing everyone of such large expenditures. 6

SERVE Work Day Completes Many Jobs Stuff The Truck for LSS! On Saturday, April 27, Mary Woodward of Lutheran Social Services will be at Gethsemane and we will be inviting Gethsemane, other congregations, and our neighborhood to Stuff the Truck! What we will be Stuffing the Truck with is all sorts of items to help Lutheran Social Services help those people that are suffering from disasters like tornadoes, fires, and floods. She will be accepting furniture, collectables, baby and children s items, large and small appliances, knick knacks, working electronics, towels, bedding just about any household item that is in clean and working condition (no clothing, grown-up books or used mattresses or box springs please.) A lot was accomplished on our Work Day, the last Saturday of February. With the help of Bob Abdou, Bill Darlage, Byron Ford, Hugh Geary, Steve and Diane Gutgesell, Judy and David Kulikowski, Joanne Leussing, Jackson Lyimo, Dave and Darlene Norman, Judy Reuning, David Reutter, Jim Sauer, Jane Sieberth, Carole Wilkins and Pastor June, we touched-up numerous painted walls in classrooms and hallways, installed corner guards, tightened cabinet doors, washed folding chairs, vacuumed pew cushions, removed pew kneelers, replaced stained ceiling tile, removed wallpaper, replaced a window curtain, replaced stained carpet squares, cleaned the IT House area well, repaired furniture, moved furniture, replaced electrical outlets and a heating vent, cleaned out the furnace room and ate donuts and pizza. We thank all who helped us make the day so successful!!! We need lots of Gethsemane volunteers for this event: people to move heavy items, move light items, people to direct visitors, give out receipts, distribute information about Gethsemane, and also help with lunch and water for volunteers. We need the whole congregation in other words! One thing that we need to do early is to let our neighborhood know about this event. On March 17 and 24 our Outreach Ministry Team will be asking for volunteers to distribute flyers to the neighborhood inviting them to Stuff the Truck and to other Gethsemane events. Stay posted for details! 7
