2 FROM THE PASTOR Walking with Jesus Jesus called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Mark 8:34 The story of Jesus betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion is central to our faith. It teaches us how our God would do anything, suffer anything, in order to save us. Even though Jesus was God, he did not escape the worst that our world can do. It also teaches us that the paradox that the way to abundant life is through death. Through dying to ourselves and rising with Christ. This Lent, our theme is Walking with Jesus. We will be talking about Jesus walk to the cross, and we will also talk about our daily walk with Jesus. Going from death to resurrection. What does it mean to take up our cross? What does it mean to follow Christ s path? How do we die and rise in our daily life? During our adult education classes, we will be looking at the gospel of Mark and how it culminates in Jesus passion story. And we will be sharing our Wednesday Lenten suppers and worship with our friends in the food pantry. I look forward to spending this time of preparation with all of you at Gethsemane Walking with Jesus. Pastor June Wilkins Lenten Soup Supper & For our Lenten Soup Suppers, we will share our supper with our friends in the food pantry! We will still share soup, bread, and the Word of God together, but we will gather in Trinity Hall (the Play and Learn lunch room) so that we can easily share our food with the people who come to the food pantry. This will take a little more effort to get dishes and food downstairs and upstairs and we will need to bring some more soup and bread in order to feed the extra people, but it will be worth it. This meal works towards our vision of meeting and welcoming our community. Our worship will still be the same, Holden Evening Prayer in the sanctuary at 7:30pm although for Ash Wednesday the service will start at 7:00pm since we have the imposition of ashes and communion. February :30 pm Community Prayers 7:00 pm Ash Wednesday February 25 March 25 6:00 pm Soup/Study with our food pantry friends 7:30 pm Holden Evening Prayer Service 2

Walking in the Light The Animate: Practices series on the central practices of the Christian faith continues throughout Epiphany. A brief video is presented by contemporary voices who pose thoughtful and interesting questions people really have. Discussions are facilitated by various Gethsemane members. The topics are appropriate for Epiphany as we look at the practices that help us to Walk in the Light, our Lectionary theme for this season. 4 BENEFIT CONCERT Faith Mission Benefit Concert Reflections Reflections Ripples from the Past Synchronicity Trio Dick Reuning - violin, Sharon Walton - piano, Bruce Posey - cello Synchronicity Trio will return to Gethsemane on Sunday, February 22 at 4:00 pm to present classical and light classical music in their 10 th anniversary Benefit Concert for Faith Mission Homeless Shelters. The program features trio music that explores classical works by Schubert (master of beautiful melodies), Handel and Clementi, with a brief 20th century interruption by Martin Yates titled Lopsided Polka. Clarinetist Denise Spires will join the trio for music on American themes with some Gershwin favorites and three movements from Anecdotes and Reflections: A Portrait of America by Rick Sowash. The latter work includes music that sometimes sounds native American, sometimes like Gershwin, sometimes like jazz, and then a crazy final movement reflecting on Sousa that sounds a bit like circus music. Enjoy fellowship at the reception afterward in the Great Hall donated in part by Mozart s Bakery and Café, 4784 N High St. Thrivent Financial, West Franklin Co. Chapter will partially match cash donations and checks made out to Faith Mission. If you want more information, please call the church at or Dick Reuning rreuning@columbus.rr.com. 4
5 FOR THOSE IN NEED Confirmands Collect Shoes, Boots & Socks Needed: New/gently used shoes, boots, and socks. All sizes and colors. Our confirmation class is collecting shoes, boots, and socks for people served by the ministry of First English Lutheran Church in downtown Columbus. All sizes, colors, kinds are needed as long as there are no holes and they are gently worn. Clean out your closets and laundry rooms! Even the singleton sock will be used somewhere there s a match for it! You can find a collection box in the narthex. THANKS! Super Bowl Sunday Is Time to Donate to the Souper Bowl February 1 is Souper Bowl Sunday! More food will be consumed in the U.S. on that day than on any other day of the year (including Thanksgiving and Christmas). However, many families right here in our community struggle with hunger every day. That s why LSS Food Pantries are here to help, and we need YOU to make Super Bowl Sunday souper! When you donate, you help us provide more than 2 million meals a year. 40% of which are eaten by children and 30% are eaten by seniors. Each dollar given will provide two meals to a hungry family! Fill Gethsemane s grocery cart with food and our soup pot with cash. The cash allows the pantry to purchase food from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank at a greatly reduced cost (48 cans of soup for only $5.00). Make your checks payable to Gethsemane Lutheran Church and write in the memo. Most needed items - canned tuna, canned beans, peanut butter, low-sodium vegetables, personal care items and cleaning supplies. 5

7 PLAY & LEARN 2015 Play Ground Improvements A new climber/slide apparatus has become a focal point for the front Infant Toddler House play area. It will replace the existing multi-colored climbing toy. Having searched through the various and many possibilities on the market, one has emerged as being the best for our project. In next month s news letter a picture of this climber will be made available. The Play and Learn Committee will invite all Gethsemane members to help make this a reality through donations, support of P&L fund raisers, and yes, even volunteered labor once installation begins later this spring. Stay tuned, as other play ground improvements are in the offing as well. 35th Anniversary Celebration April 19, 2015: Another important happening is being planned. There is much joy over the accomplishments of our child care facility. The P&L committee, staff and children will join with the members of Gethsemane in a celebrative worship service is an exciting year. The Play and Learn Committee Gethsemane has been recycling cardboard and paper for several years. Now, we have started to recycle bottles, cans, and milk jugs. Recycling bins have been placed in the conference room, atrium, library and Great Hall. Please use these to recycle your empty water bottles or pop cans that you bring to your church meeting. PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY TRASH IN THEM. 7

Perhaps a monthly visit ( or more frequent if desired), home communion, greeting cards on special occasions, rides to doctor visits, lunch out---to name a few possibilities. Whatever fits the occasion and situation. This involves only a one-year commitment. At the end of this period of time you can opt out or renew your commitment for another year. How do I get involved? If this sounds like a ministry you would love to be a part of, please contact one of our Health Ministry Team members: Judy and Dave Kulikowski, Barb and Jim Driver, Dorothea Koch, Darlene Norman, or Emilie Hagerdorn.
