3 From the Pastor My dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus: Merry Christmas! I wish you all a very blessed Christmas! We celebrate the birth of Our Savior! We celebrate God becoming man to save us from sin and death! There is no better Christmas gift than this! As we come together to worship God in these sacred liturgies let us reflect upon the immensity of this event. The Incarnation is the mystery of God becoming one of His creatures. God became a human being out of pure love for us. And even though humanity rebelled against His love, God did not abandon us. Rather, he sent His Son so that we might have life and have it abundantly! In Jesus Christ we find fulfillment and peace. It is only when we follow Him in His service to His Father and to others that we are fulfilled. It is only when we die to self to live for Christ that we are fully alive! The Holy Mass is our time to say thank you to God for the gift of His Son. After all, Jesus even commanded His disciples to Do this in memory of me, referring to the Mass. Why? Because He wants to tell us over and over that He loves us! The Mass is a representation of the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross in the form of a meal. The sacrificial Passover Meal of the Old Covenant was only a prelude to the sacrificial meal of the Mass. And so there is nothing more important in our lives than to give Christ thanks for coming into the world and sacrificing His life for all of us. If you have not made the commitment to attend Mass every Sunday for that hour of worship, please consider doing so for this new year. There would be no greater gift to God, no better way of saying thanks, and no better gift to yourself and your family! And in this season of giving thanks, I would like to extend my gratitude to all of you for your prayers and support of St. Catharine Parish. Many of you have given of your time, talent, and treasure to keep this parish strong and to grow it. It is our mission here at St. Catharine Parish to continue to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ and to help save souls. It is only through your generosity that we can make this happen. And it is through the kindness of several parishioners that we are happy to extend a gift to all of you this Christmas! We would like to give to you a book entitled Resisting Happiness. Resisting Happiness is a deeply personal, disarmingly transparent look at why we sabotage our own happiness and what to do about it. This book is very well written and will provide wonderful insight into the beauty and richness of our Catholic faith. It is my prayer that this will help you to fall more in love with Christ. Using videos, lectures and discussion, this program opens up the big picture of the Catholic faith in a way that helps us know it, live it, and articulate it to others.
