Some of the updates focused on the reason why we need to build more space here at St. Catharine. Some of the updates described the various spaces and showed the architectural drawings of the proposed project. Some of the updates highlighted the various messages from the parishioners that have shared their testimony about what they love about St. Catharine and why they support the campaign. As we near the end of the campaign, we are pleased to recognize the commitments that so many of you have made to fund the campaign. This will allow us to build the spaces that will accommodate our current and future programs which will benefit our community for generations to come. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU The Second Collection this weekend is for Catholic Home Missions. Please give generously. The offertory update for May will be available next week. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL: For the month of June, parishioners are encouraged to provide Canned Fruit for the Food Pantry. We are also always in need of reusable cloth grocery bags. 3 Est From the Pastor As many of you are aware, Msgr. has moved out of his home and into the Villas of St. Therese. As a result, he will no longer be able to offer Masses here at St. Catharine Church. It has been a joy and privilege to come to know Msgr. Sorohan. He has been an incredible source of strength and inspiration to me in my time here as pastor. He has constantly looked to help and assist in any way he was able. As a brother priest, he is a great example to me of what it means to be a priest. He serves Christ and His Holy Church faithfully, with great love and devotion. I find it very appropriate that his last Mass here will be offered on this great feast of Corpus Christi, the celebration of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. It is most appropriate because it is the love of Christ, especially present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, that defines the priesthood. A priest is ordained to make Christ present to his people and there is no greater way to fulfill this vocation than through the offering of the holy Mass. Throughout his almost 60 years of priesthood, Msgr. Sorohan has offered tens of thousands of Masses and made Christ present to tens of thousands. Undoubtedly, through the grace present in the Holy Eucharist he has help to bring about the transformation of many lives and saved many souls. There is no greater joy for a priest! Catholic education - and especially St. Catharine School - has been blessed by Monsignor s wisdom, passion for Catholic education, spiritual advice, vision, and care for those who have worked for and with him. These values define his many gifts that he has given to our school and parish. We are a better school, better students, and better teachers because Monsignor has been part of our lives. 5 MSGR DAVID SOROHAN Born in Perry County, he was one of six children. He graduated from St. Aloysius Academy in New Lexington in 1952 and, despite several offers of posthigh school basketball scholarships, he began four years of studies for the priesthood at St. Charles College ( ). He then spent the next four years at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he earned his License in Sacred Theology. Monsignor was ordained a priest there on December 20, 1959, by Archbishop Martin O Connor, then rector of the North American College in Rome. Monsignor s first priestly assignment was as associate pastor at Sacred Heart Church, New Philadelphia, in From 1963 to 1965, he served at St. Peter Church, Columbus, during which time he began his long association with education. Over the next seven years, he taught at DeSales High School; served as the assistant diocesan school superintendent; returned to DeSales as the assistant principal and vocation coordinator; completed a master s in educational administration at The Ohio State University before serving as principal at Marion Catholic High School; and spent two years at Columbia University where he was awarded his doctorate in school administration. Msgr. Sorohan was appointed Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese in 1971 and later Episcopal Vicar for Education which extended his authority to additional areas such as religious education for public school students and youth ministries. He considered this position as "an umbrella covering all phases of Catholic education from birth throughout life." He remained Vicar until 1993 having completed five threeyear terms. He returned to parish ministry as pastor of St. Peter Church, Columbus, in 1978, and later as pastor of St. Catharine in A model for life-long learning, Msgr. participated in a Spanish immersion program so he might better serve the increasing Hispanic population of St. Catharine. Although he retired in 2004 from his full-time duties as priest, he has continued a close relationship with St. Catharine parish, where he spent 16 years as pastor. Until recently he had assisted with the Hispanic Ministry at Christ the King Parish. Monsignor now enjoys retirement at the Villas of St. Therese, where he continues to offer Masses.
