1 The Challenger AUGUST 2016 Inside This Issue Greetings from Pastor Young Adult Highlight, VBS, Preschool News, Youth Fellowship Missions Opportunities Upcoming Events, Visitation List, Remembering Betty Christhilf August Sermon Series, Dialogue Group, Charge Conference, Challenger August Calendar Glyndon United Methodist Church 4713 Butler Road, PO Box 84 Glyndon, MD glyndonumchurch@gmail.com A Time of Reflecting As I sit here typing this, I realize that it has been one year and 7 days since my first worship at Glyndon UMC. I give thanks to God every day for the opportunities, blessings, and gifts of this past year! Here are just a few that come to my mind: A full sanctuary (131, not 200 as I remembered!) and a fun ice cream social to welcome our arrival. A fun and faith-filled VBS for 14 in summer of 2015 and 36 registered for our 2016 CaveQuest VBS coming soon! Praying with the labyrinth in the back parking lot and prayer stations in the cloister hallway for Lent. An amazing Vespers service with 200 in attendance. Growing in faith through our Ephesians Bible Study, theology discussion group at Gourmet Girls, Embodied Light Advent Study, and a Covenant Discipleship study. A phenomenal youth worship service with 131 in attendance and filling Dew Hall for a fellowship lunch. A holy week filled with meaningful worship on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Serving the community at Ronald McDonald House, Angels of Addiction, Timber Grove Elementary, Mission of Mercy, First Fruits Farm, and more. 18 leaders gathered for our first leadership retreat; we worshipped, talked about healthy vibrant church leadership, celebrated our successes, and identified concrete goals for the coming year. I m looking forward to all that God will do in the coming year(s). In August, I ll be kicking off a new sermon series called, No Fear in Love, based on a book by Will Willimon entitled Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love. Given our national and world context, I can t think of a topic more worthy of our time. Our Worship Design Team will be organizing to discuss how to continue to make worship at Glyndon UMC engaging and transformative. We ll be kicking off our electronic giving program in the fall as we talk about gratitude and stewardship. And much, much more! I want to share with you two of my learnings from this first year in pastoral ministry in hopes that they ll encourage you in your own ministry. My first lesson is that all God requires of us is to plant seeds. We can water and fertilize soil and be wise about planting. But GOD brings the growth. My second lesson is that progress takes time. Challenges that have existed for years cannot be erased in a day, a week, a month, or even a year. So as we continue to grow leaders, enhance financial processes, develop human resource systems, etc., we do it one step at a time trusting God to lead and guide us. Thanks for your ongoing love and support of my pastoral ministry. Kevin and I are back, renewed and re-energized to share God s love with the world through our faith and service at Glyndon UMC. With grace and peace, Pastor Dawn 1

2 Vacation Bible School VBS is in full swing with 36 children registered (last year less than a dozen). And if you haven t seen Dew Hall yet, you are really missing out. Donations have poured in. Volunteers have put in numerous hours of time and creativity to promote this event and to make it a fun and meaningful experience. Lessons on Jesus Christ are presented with fabulous visuals, scripture based-lessons, and hands on projects done in an environment of learning, Christian love, and hearing the gospel to build firm Christian foundations. A special thanks to Hunt Valley Church for loaning us their VBS decorations, saving us money and enhancing our set up. What a joy! Praise God for all the little ones entering our church for VBS. Please pray for the VBS volunteers and all the families that will be impacted by this week. It s so wonderful, we have two celebrations for you to join in on, a time to share the good old GUMC Family hospitality. Friday, August We will have a VBS Potluck Dinner at 6pm in Dew Hall. Bring your favorite dish to share, meet our VBS children and parents, see samples of the program activities, and even participate in a project. Sunday, August 7 We will be celebrating VBS in 10am worship. After the service all are invited into Dew Hall to see our amazing decorations, have a snack, and view highlights of our VBS week. I hope you will be able to join us. Fall Youth Fellowship Fall is a great time of the year to emphasize the connectedness of our faith community and to encourage us to see ourselves as one even when we aren t together at church. Our first Youth Worship night will be September 18th, 5pm to 7pm. We will be creating our own pizzas and learning how we can stay connected to each other. We will explore John 15: Please join us for a time of faith, fellowship and fun. Upcoming Youth Worship Dates: October 16, 5pm to 7pm November 20, 5pm to 7pm November 20, 5pm to 7pm December 18, 11am to 2 pm (Note: time change because we will be making cookies for our fundraiser) Our Preschool sessions start up the first week in September (just weeks away). Orientation is on Tuesday, August 30, 6 to7pm. Please helps us spread the word that we still have a few slots open and are taking registrations until completely filled up. We have a wonderful program, fabulous teachers and aides, and competitive pricing. It is essential to give children a firm Christian foundation early on to build upon as they go out into the world. One of our students might be our future pastor! 2 Young Adult Highlight JACK CLEMENTS is the kind of teenager everyone loves to be around. He is warm, funny and willing to help when asked, even carving out time from busy High School schedule. He can often be found helping to keep the church property looking good by mowing, trimming, and removing sticks. He was always prepared and responsible, making him an excellent role model for the younger kids participating in Vespers. Marti Clements says Did you know that when I do American Idol in my Sunday school class, Jack is always one of my most dynamic participants? Instead of deciding whether or not to send contestants to Hollywood, our Sunday School members listen to characters from the bible to decide whether or not they should go to heaven! Even this year, Jack helped by doing a rousing rendition of Zaccheus on his knees as the wee little man! Jack has also participated in Youth Worship, Youth Sunday School, and regular Sunday School. He helps with pancake suppers and other youth-led events. He will be missed as he moves on to college. Jack said my favorite memory from GUMC was my confirmation journey, specifically Manidokan! Being with friends, coming together and learning about each other as well as building our own relationship with GOD was a special experience. It was something that had a big spiritual impact on my life but also fun along the way.

3 Timber Grove Elementary Back to School Fundraiser Help Wanted: Mission Trip Experience helpful but not required. Where: Pittsburgh, PA When: Nov. 4 6, 2016 Cost: $ (Cost includes meals, lodging, fellowship and the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ). We are organizing a group to participate in a 3-day mission trip to Pittsburgh, PA. We may be asked to drywall, lay shingles, build a handicapped ramp or paint a porch. Please see Robin Knell, Lynn Beebe or Pastor Dawn if you have questions or would like more details. We ask that you notify us of your commitment by Sept 25, so that we know how many are interested. Money is due 30 days before the trip. The Pittsburgh Project is a Christian non-profit community development organization with a nearly 30-year track record of serving the city s most vulnerable residents. If you ve been in a Walmart recently, you know that the back-to-school supplies are filling the aisles already! The sales seem to start earlier every year. Again this year, in our on-going partnership with Timber Grove Elementary, we will be collecting school supplies for their students. The needs are great, and funding is ever-shrinking. We want to do our best to help! Two suggestions for accomplishing this are as follows: A: Buy a quantity of the following items that teachers routinely purchase using their own money throughout the year. #2 pencils not mechanical Glue sticks (no liquid glue) Hardback composition notebooks, wide-ruled **Scissors Fiskars preferred Crayons (max 24/box) Highlighters orange or yellow 2-pocket folders, assorted colors Plastic supply boxes or pencil bags/pouches B. On the glass display case in the glass lobby by parking lot, on bright yellow paper, you will find a school supply list by grade. If you are able, and this is suggested for people who don t already have children of their own that they re buying for, purchase the complete supply list for one student in one grade. If you could put it in a bag marked with the appropriate grade, it would be much appreciated. Also needed are backpacks and lunch boxes for all age students. Whatever you can do to help these children will be a blessing, both to them and to you. Remember when YOU were so excited to have a book bag full of unbroker crayons, sharp pencils, a beautiful school box or pencil case, and other miscellaneous items in your book bag on that glorious first day? Let s give these kids that same happy memory? A collection box is available in the glass lobby off parking lot. Please have your donations in by Thursday, August 18 so that we can prepare a display for a blessing of these supplies and our own kids backpacks by Pastor Dawn on Sunday, August 21. THANK YOU!!! MISSION MOMENT Volunteers needed, no experience necessary! From toddlers (with parental supervision) to senior citizens! Many volunteers are blessed by the rich experience out in the fields and knowing that the Lord s bounty will be shared with our brothers and sisters in need. It is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to serve and earn service hours. Depart from GUMC at 8:00am. Return no later than 1:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. Contact Robin Krell (Cell: / rskrti68591@verizon.net) to sign up and/or confirm if work is still on if weather is a question. Upcoming Dates Saturday, September 17 Saturday, October 8 3

4 Family Night at the Ball Park August 13, 2016 Join us at the Harry Grove Stadium for the Frederick Keys game, complete with a tail gate party at 4pm to start things off. The GUMC men supply burgers and hot dogs, cooked on the grill and beverages. People can bring a side dish, if they desire,. At 6pm the ballgame starts! This is a fabulous family outing. Kids get to run the bases and there are fireworks for all ages to enjoy! Cost for tickets range from $7 to $13. If we get enough people to sign up early, we can get discount tickets. People who do not register early can still come on game day. Tickets are always available at the door. To sign up or to get more info, Contact Dan Marshall ( / dfmarshall2@verizon.net) Covenant Bible Study The Covenant bible study will reconvene, after their summer break, at 7:00 pm on Thursday, August 11 and will continue through September 29. The first meeting will be at the home of Jan and Chuck Bradley. This is an established group, but if you are interested in starting up another bible study group, please contact Pastor Dawn. Girlfriends Lunch Now that everyone is finishing up their vacations in August, we are looking forward to gathering our GUMC girlfriends together to catch up on each other s lives and discuss the latest and greatest news over some tasty food at J&P s restaurant (4821 Butler Road, Glyndon). Please consider joining us on Sundays at 12:30 starting on Sunday, September 4. You can contact Kathy Rittler or Pastor Dawn for more details. It s a great follow up to Sunday Worship! Remembering Betty Christhilf God, in His infinite wisdom and tender mercy, called home our sister in Christ, Betty Christhilf at the age of 102, on July 19th at the home of her daughter, Anne Dancu, in Naples, Florida. The Christhilfs were long time members of Glyndon UMC, for more than 70 years. Thanks to Jinny Weiss, a member for 62 years, who brought this to our attention. Please pray for Anne Dancu, and other family and friends during this difficult time. If you would like to send a card to Betty s family, you can send it to Mrs. Anne Dancu, 1325 Murex Drive, Naples, FL or call Anne at I am sure your words will be comforting and appreciated. 5 The Challenger The Challenger is enjoyed by many and for some the main source of keeping up with what s going on at GUMC! We encourage you to submit articles for events your committee or team may be planning so we can alert everyone to carve out time on their calendars to attend. But in order to get the Challenger out to you by the first of the month, we need tall articles submissions ed or dropped off in finished format by the 15th of the prior month. (So for the September Challenger we need articles submitted by August 15) This will allow time for getting answers to questions or getting missing info, and formatting the information so it is more organized and visually appropriate for your reading pleasure, with easier reference. We also need you to communicate your meetings and event dates to be included on the master church calendar for inclusion on the Challenger Calendar. It s frustrating to receive them after the Challenger has already been sent out. Thanks so much for your help! Annual Charge Conference Coming Soon They say time flies when you are having fun, so it is hard to believe that Pastor Dawn will be with us for her second Charge Conference as the pastor of Glyndon United Methodist Church on September 26 at 7pm. Pleasant Hill UMC will be hosting. Please mark your calendars to attend this meeting. All committee chairs and leadership team need to prepare your reports and forward them to Pastor Dawn to start preparing packets of materials for the meeting. Please see Pastor Dawn if you have questions on what is needed. NEW SERMON SERIES No Fear in Love A Sermon Series based on William H. Willimon s Book: Fear of the Other: No Fear in Love. Aug 7: Saved By the Other Aug 14: The Other, My Enemy? Aug 21: Learning to Fear Like Christians Aug 28: Loving the Other in Church Sept 4: Jesus, the Other We will have a Saturday morning dialogue group to discuss the book, Pastor Dawn s sermons, and relevant personal, national, and world issues around Fear of the Other. They will be held on 3 Saturdays in August and September, August 13, August 27, and September 10 (to avoid First Fruits Saturday and the Labor Day Weekend). The dialogue group will gather at 9am at Gourmet Girls (1 Easter Ct., Suite D, Owings Mills) to share breakfast and share our hearts. Please join us for lively, open, and reflective discussion. Church Dates To Remember & Mark on Your Calendar! The First Sunday of the Month is Food Sunday for the Crisis Center, helping them to provide food for the families who sometimes have to choose between food or medicine for their family. Bring your canned food and dry foods and place in the labeled Sunday Food tote in the glass lobby. The Last Sunday of the Month is Casserole Sunday, helping to support Our Daily Bread who feeds the homeless in a dignified environment of love and sharing. Bring in your casseroles (homemade or the favorite Stouffers frozen lasagna) and place them in the Dew Hall kitchen freezer for pick up. Pans and recipes available at the church office or in the glass lobby. Generous hands are blessed hands because they give bread to the poor. Proverbs 22:9 Rally Day is Sunday, September 11 and this will be our last 10am service. Return to Regular Worship & Sunday School Schedule: Sunday, September 18, we will return to our regular schedule as follows: 8:30am Morning Glory Praise Service 9:30am Traditional Worship 11:00am Traditional Worship (Note: 8am - Morning Glory Breakfast 2nd Sunday of the Month) 5
