1 May 2016 Volume 3, Issue 5 Inside this Issue The Challenger Greetings from Pastor Dawn Missions Moment, Youth/Young Adult Highlight, Sunday School Adopt A Table GUMS Thank You Vacation Bible School Rock Looking Ahead Summer Worship Schedule Reaching out to friends 5 Calendar Glyndon United Methodist Church 4713 Butler Road Glyndon, MD glyndonumchurch@gmail.com Spring Greetings from Pastor Dawn As I write this, we are midway through our A Living Faith: Big Questions & Small Steps sermon series. I pray that as we take this journey together that you are taking the opportunity to ask yourself big questions about what you believe and about how your belief impacts your living. I pray that you are taking the opportunity to be in conversation within your family or friends about these issues. I truly believe that the more we talk together about our faith what we believe about God, God s relationship with humankind, and God s purposes in the world the closer we grow to God and the more faithfully we will fulfill our calling. Our Living Faith theology dialogue group will continue at Gourmet Girls (1 Easter Ct., Owings Mills) Saturday mornings from 9 10(ish) am. Come share some breakfast and talk theology, listen, and grow! All perspectives welcome. Please know that I d also be happy to talk with you about anything one-onone just or call to set up a time! May 8th, Pentecost Sunday and Graduation Recognition Sunday on May 15 th, and Trinity Sunday on May 22 nd. Our May Family Fellowship evening is May 22 and I m hoping we ll be working together on some new art for DEW Hall. May is an important month for our denomination as General Conference 2016 gathers in Portland, Oregon from May to discuss how our denomination is called to move into the future. You can find important General Conference information at al-conference From June 1-4, Dan Marshall, Bob Rittler, and I will gather in Washington DC with pastors and lay representatives from around the Baltimore Washington conference for Annual Conference. Please keep our delegates, our church leaders, and the both of these conferences in your prayers as we strive to lead a global and diverse church into a bright and faithful future. With grace and peace, Pastor Dawn We have many exciting things coming up in May: Second Sunday celebration and Mother s Day on ~ 1 ~

2 Challenger Mission Moment Peace with Justice Sunday is one of the United Methodists six churchwide Special Sundays of giving. Peace with Justice includes striving to live and work with people around the world, advocating for those who are oppressed, breaking down barriers so that God children s everywhere have access to jobs, housing, education, food, clean water, and health care. 50% of your donation remains with our annual conference and 50% goes to the UM General Board of Church and society for grants to US and International programs. You gifts support weekend food supplies for children from impoverished families, redemptive work opportunities for those deemed traditionally unemployable, summer camps to teach youth alternatives to gang involvement and violence, and activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to prepare for peaceful elections. For more information, go to Please consider making a special donation on Peace with Justice Sunday, celebrated this year on May 22. Being a Christian is much like a game of tennis; you need to serve to win! Help Wanted Awesome Mission Opportunity Volunteers, no experience necessary! From toddlers (with parental supervision) to senior citizens! Many volunteers are blessed by the rich experience out in the fields and knowing that the Lord s bounty will be shared with our brothers and sisters in need. It is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to serve and earn service hours. Depart from GUMC at 8:00am. Return no later than 1:30 pm. Saturday, May 21 (tentative) Saturday, June (date TBD) Saturday, July 30 Saturday, September 17 Saturday, October 8 Love, Pray, Serve INVITE FAMILY, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO SHARE IN FELLOWSHIP Adults Have Sunday School Class, too! Studying God s word and understanding His will for us is a lifelong project work in progress as they say. So please consider joining us for the Adult Sunday School class held on Sunday mornings from 9:30a to 10:30a in the church parlor. Bob Rittler will be the teacher for May. All are welcome and encouraged to learn and grow with us we share perspectives and questions to enhance our spiritual journey. Youth & Young Adults Highlight This month s spotlight is on PAIGE SUMMERS Paige has attended our church since she was born. This is where she was baptized, confirmed and has been a part of numerous activities in our church. She has been an active member in the choir since she was a very young girl. This year the Youth is actually a trio of voices including Paige Summers, senior Miranda Morris, and junior, Julia Connor. Paige has a wonderful voice that blends beautifully with the other two. I appreciate her commitment to the choir and her willingness to sing a solo upon request. She possesses a big personality and passion. I thank Paige for sharing herself and her talents with our church family, stated Carrie Connors. Paige has also been active in helping with VBS and this past summer she was most proud of the role she played as VBS athletic director. Paige will be attending Regent University in the fall, majoring in psychology. Not wanting to give up on her love of art, she will minor in fine arts. Paige hopes to find a soccer club and softball team to join as she has been playing both sports as long as she can remember. She said, I m anxious and yet so excited to start my life in Virginia Beach.

3 Vacation Bible School 2016 Plans for VBS Cave Quest are well under way. We have all of the information you need to register your child or for you to register as a volunteer for the week on the church website. The dates are August 1-5 from 9am until noon. In an effort to have an amazing experience for the children, we would like to ask for the following donations: Empty clear plastic wide mouth jars (such as small mayonnaise, peanut butter or jelly jars LED tealights Sponges (all shapes and sizes) Neon or glow in the dark fabric/puffy paint Balloons Any black or purple decorations Neon or glow-in the dark paint Butcher paper Pool noodles Black, purple or aqua disposable table cloths For more info visit our website: For questions call the church office or Terri Dotterer at waterri@gmail.com. GUMS Art Show & Auction THANKS Thanks to all who helped support the Preschool Art Show. This event was a HUGE success, in large part to the support of church members. We had several members donate art to auction off in the silent auction as well as many pieces on display from Pastor Dawn, Carrie Connors, Sally Wroe and Ericka Ault. Thank you to all who made this such a wonderful evening! ADOPT A TABLE Thanks to all who have contributed to our Table fundraiser to upgrade Dew Hall. Our goal is to purchase 20 new tables (12 rectangular and 8 circular). We would like you to consider adopting according to your desired level and ability to participate. Options are as follows: Full table(s) $100 each ¼ table - $25 per quarter If you are able to help, please o note the words Adopt a Table are noted on your check and drop it in the offering plate or at the church office. Check out progress toward our GOAL on the Dew Hall display! ~ 3 ~ Looking for a way to help our youth? We will be looking for sponsors to help with the cost of ROCK. This is any opportunity to support a youth member attending a Christian retreat with 5000 other Christian youth from our area. Please be watching for our envelopes so you can help our youth enjoy this tradition!
