1 FATHER EDWARD FOX COUNCIL 6747 & FATHER JAMES BURGE ASSEMBLY 2707 NEWS Fraternal Year, Issue 7 January 2018 Faithful Navigators Message My Brother Sir Knights, Happy New Year 2018! The New Year begins January 1 with the Solemnity of Mary the Holy Mother of God. We are reminded Omnes Ad Jesum Per Marian / All to Jesus through Mary and to pray the Rosary of Mary often. The new year provides for opportunity to reflect on the year ended and develop resolutions for the future. We reflect on what has been important in our life. What has brought us joy, or blessings, or trial, or tribulations. We think of the future. Of our families, loved ones, and friends. We re thankful for God s presence, love, understanding, and forgiveness. As Knights, we are called to be servant leaders in our councils, parishes, and communities. May this New Year bring you blessings in abundance of love, joy, health, peace, and prosperity. And may the Lord bless you and keep you! May the Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! May the Lord look upon you with kindness and give you peace! I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalms 16:8 Claude Steele, Ed. S To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man. William Shakespeare Lift High the Cross! Patriotism!. When we serve the poor and the sick we serve Jesus. We must not fail to help our neighbors, because in them we serve Jesus." 2 The Most Rev. Barry C. Knestout, Bishop-designate of Diocese of Richmond Evening Prayer will be celebrated Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. This event is open to the public and seating is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Installation Mass for Bishop-designate Barry C. Knestout, 13 th Bishop of Richmond, will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Seating is by invitation only. The Installation Mass will be livestreamed on the diocesan website. Father James Burge Assembly Officers Navigator SK Claude Steele Friar SK Rev. Fr. Charles Ssebalamu Comptroller SK Adam Cassol Captain SK Nelson Carey Father Anthony Marques, Special to The Catholic Virginian On Jan. 12, for the 13th time in its nearly 200-year history, the Diocese of Richmond will receive a new bishop. As five of his predecessors have done, Bishop-designate Barry C. Knestout will become the bishop of Richmond by formally entering the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and presenting his credentials. Since Bishop-designate Knestout has already been ordained a bishop, he will assume the leadership of the Diocese of Richmond by means of a rite called installation, which will take place within Mass. Admiral Purser Pilot Rodriguez Scribe SK Clarence Rose SK Donald Melia SK Humberto SK Arnold Bohanan The installation rite is more than pageantry; its gestures and symbols manifest the universal Church, which is based on the Twelve Apostles and their successors, who are the pope and bishops. The universal Church is composed of particular Churches (dioceses), each of which is a community of laity assembled with its bishop, priests, and deacons, and all of them in union with the pope. The nature of the Church will be evident throughout the Mass of Installation. Beginning outside, Bishop-designate Knestout will be greeted at the doors of the cathedral, where he will be presented with a crucifix that he will venerate with a kiss. Next, using holy water, the bishop-designate will bless himself and those around him. Then the entrance procession of liturgical ministers (seminarians) and clergy will take place. Inner Sentinel SK Frank Gwazdauskas Outer Sentinel SK Mark Hawley 1 Year Trustee SK Arnold Bohannan 2 Year Trustee SK Frank Gwazdauskas 3 Year Trustee SK Nelson Carey Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, the metropolitan or head of the ecclesiastical province to which Richmond and neighboring dioceses belong, will conduct the next part of the Mass. Standing at the bishop s chair (cathedra), Archbishop Lori will begin the liturgy and introduce the apostolic nuncio (the Vatican ambassador to the United States), Archbishop Christophe Pierre, who will read the apostolic letter from Pope Francis appointing Bishop-designate Knestout to the Diocese of Richmond. The metropolitan s role highlights the connection between a diocese and other Churches; the presence of the nuncio signifies the membership of a diocese in the universal Church by being in union with the pope. Bishop-designate Knestout will show the apostolic letter, which is called a bull because of its seal (in Latin: bulla), to the college of consultors, the group of priests who act as senior advisers to the diocesan bishop. He will also show the letter to the faithful. Once the letter has been shown, the metropolitan and nuncio will lead Bishop-designate Knestout to the cathedra, inviting him to be seated in it for the first time, and handing him his crozier (pastoral staff). Representatives of the diocese will then greet the new bishop of Richmond. Bishop Knestout will preside over the rest of the Mass and preach the homily. The setting of the cathedral church is central to the rite of installation. The term cathedral is derived from the Latin cathedra (meaning chair ), which represents the bishop s teaching and governing authority, as well as the unity of the local Church gathered around him. Occupying that chair for the first time, Bishop Barry C. Knestout will begin his ministry as the 13th bishop of Richmond. 8 Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney: The Father McGivney Guild promotes the cause for canonization of our founder: Father Michael J. McGivney. The goal of the Guild is to spread the good word about his holiness of life, to encourage devotion to his memory, and to seek his intercession before the throne of God. The Guild serves as a clearinghouse for information about Father McGivney, his life and works, and any favors attributed to his intercession. Father McGivney is a unique model for today s Catholic and today s Catholic priest because of his attention to the social ills and injustices of his day and his collaboration with the laity. He was zealous for the life of union with God through prayer and the sacraments, and he would have been right at home in today s world. He was then and would be today an eager apostle for the Gospel of life, and a determined foe of the culture of death. There is no cost to join the Guild, but donations are welcome. For more information about the Guild or to donate go to: Prayer for the Canonization of Father Michael J. McGivney: God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen PRAYER INTENTIONS Immaculate Mother. Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. Health of the Sick, your anointed heavenly hands healed Juan Bernardino and brought us the River of Light, of Life, and of Health. Into your heavenly hands I commend my faith, my hope and all my sufferings, please unite them to the Passion of your Son, Jesus Christ, that they may serve as instruments of my salvation and the salvation of all my brothers and sisters. From this moment on I accept all that the Sacred Heart of your Son may wish to send me. I desire to complete in my life what is lacking to His Redeeming Passion. Oh Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe. I trust that you will give me the strength and all that I need to live with spiritual health and if it serves God s glory and my true well being, you will give me my physical health also. Amen. When we pray for others, we lift them up to God, seeking God s grace and blessing in their individual situations. When we ask others to pray for us, we honor them with our trust. 9 Message from the State Deputy January 1, 2018 My Brother Knights of the great Jurisdiction of Virginia, Wendy and I, and our family, want to wish you and your family a very Happy and Blessed New Year! We wish you great health, happiness, and prosperity in the New Year. I have witnessed firsthand Councils throughout Virginia demonstrate that we, as the Knights of Columbus, are defined and guided by our Faith and continue to Lift High the Cross every day. The New Year provides us with time to reflect on the achievements of the past six months and allows us to take stock of the programs and membership recruitment efforts that were successful as well as those programs and recruitment events which may need a few tweaks to bring your Council closer to the parish community while allowing council members to grow closer to the Faith. The New Year provides us with an opportunity for a fresh start as you and your Council strive to achieve your goals during the second half of the fraternal year. I am fully committed and energized, as are my fellow State Officers, Directors and their staffs, and District Deputies to assist every Council in Virginia make this the best year that your Council has ever had. Fraternally, Stephen (Steve) Kehoe State Deputy Jurisdiction of Virginia Message from District Master January 1, 2018 Uniform/Dress Requirements: Happy New Year Hopefully this year will have less turmoil and changes for our Order. With many Renewal of Obligations and other functions coming up, I thought I would remind everyone of the current uniform and dress requirements for events. For all Color Corps events, the new Uniform with service baldric, sword, and white gloves, is the preferred dress. Service Regalia may be worn until June 30, For other events, officers and members may wear the Uniform without service baldric and sword. When wearing the Uniform without service baldric and sword, the social baldric is NOT worn. For social events, the correct dress is a dark suit with white shirt and neck tie, with social baldric. The PG-113 pin of the 4th Degree is the only pin authorized for wear. At Renewal of Obligations, Installations, and other events the appropriate dress for officers and members is the dark suit with white shirt, neck tie, social baldric, and PG-113 pin. Although wear of service regalia has been extended to June 30, 2019, use of the social regalia with formal tux has not. Members should no longer be wearing the tux with bow tie and social baldric to official events. Patriotically Proud Tom Master, Virginia District
10 MONTH OF THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS The month of January is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. After the Blessed Virgin Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit, the angel Gabriel appeared to St. Joseph and told him that the Child s name should be called Jesus, meaning God Saves. According to Jewish law, on the 8th day after his birth a male child was to be circumcised, receive his name, and become a full member of God s covenant people. According to the old Roman liturgical calendar, the Feast of the Circumcision of Jesus was celebrated on January 1st, eight days after Christmas, the same day that He was given His sacred name. Currently we celebrate the Solemnity of the Mother of God on January 1st and honor the Holy Name of Jesus on January 3rd. For Catholics, Jesus sacred name is the object of a special devotion symbolized by the monogram IHS, (sometimes called a Christogram), which is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of His name.
