3 The VALUE of the adult and youth choirs, and the purpose of any choir in the Church, is the proclamation of the gospel. This is done in two ways, care and compassion for each choir member, and singing as an expression of the gospel. Music in the church is one of the most integral parts of worship, and is one of very few things in the world that is able to connect us so deeply to God. St. Augustine, a renowned theologian from the fourth century, said: He who sings prays twice. CUMC Adult & Youth Choirs What We Do The Adult Handbell Choir plays two to five octave music, and the Chancel Choir sings four part choral music of all styles. All youth choirs ring two octave music, and sing unison to two-part music. All Choirs sing and ring for the sole purpose of glorifying God. Why We Play Music Music in the church is one of the most integral parts of worship, and is one of very few things in the world that is able to connect us so deeply to God. St. Augustine, a renowned theologian from the fourth century, said: He who sings prays twice. Everyone from high school age and older is welcome to sing and ring in the adult choirs, and everyone from Kindergarten to 8th grade is welcome to sing and ring in the youth choirs. There is no experience necessary to join any of the choirs. When We Sing Adult choirs rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6 8:15 PM beginning AUGUST 3. Handbell rehearsal begins at 6 PM, andchancel Choir rehearsal begins at 7:05 PM. Youth choirs rehearse on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM. CONTACT INFORMATION For further information, please contact, Adam Winters or Nancy French. Adam Winters Chandler UMC Choral Director acwinters84@gmail.com Nancy French Joyful Ringers & Singers Director Nancy_french1@yahoo.com Page 3 The Value and Purpose of the Adult and Youth Choirs at Chandler United Methodist Church The value of the adult and youth choirs, and the purpose of any choir in the Church, is the proclamation of the gospel. This is done in two ways, care and compassion for each choir member, and singing as an expression of the gospel. The first value that the adult and youth choirs have is that we are caring and compassionate for each other. This means we submit our lives to the Messiahship of Jesus through participation in a group of people committed to singing the gospel. The members of the choir care for each other when hardships arise. Fellowship is also important to our ministry, as it helps members get to know each other more intimately. The adult choirs at CUMC go on outings regularly throughout the choral season to support one another. Second is the playing and singing of the gospel. As an expression of loving and living the gospel, egos are put aside, and individual voices are carefully subordinated to group sound. Adam and Nancy s job in the life of the church as the directors of the adult and youth choirs is to lead and coach the blending of bells and voices to create and grow the members in each group, rich in harmony, through which to proclaim the gospel. They do this in a caring and loving manner. Although there is no prior experience necessary to be in the groups, their goal is to get the most out of the ringers and singers. These are only two of the many values and purposes of the adult and youth choirs at CUMC. Adam and Nancy look forward to continuing the tradition of bringing the gospel to life at Chandler United Methodist Church.

5 Page 5 Adult & Family Ministries AUGUST ACTIVITY Adult and Family Ministry will participate in packaging food with Feed My Starving Children on August 20th from 9 11:30 AM. Watch for more details and remember to sign up at the Kiosk on Sunday mornings. Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) was founded in 1987 and is a Christian non-profit organization committed to feeding God s children in body and spirit. Volunteers hand-pack meals which are formulated for malnourished children and the meals are sent to partners around the world where they re used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics, and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. FMSC has reached nearly 70 countries in its history. SEPTEMBER ACTIVITY In September, Adult and Family will help with various tasks at the Chandler Christian Community Center on Saturday, September 17th from 9 11 am. More information to come about this in future church communications. The Chandler Christian Community Center is celebrating its 50th year of helping others this fall. You can read more about the Center and the work done at CONGREGATIONAL CARE CONGREGATIONAL CARE A caring congregation exhibits DISCIPLESHIP in today's world. Discipleship in action is embracing and assisting in life change modeled on the teaching of the One we follow. The important distinction of Christian discipleship is we are not only called to learn the teachings of Jesus Christ, but also to live them. This ongoing process requires small steps imitating Jesus in our compassion and care for one another. How do we show our care for one another at Chandler UMC? A warm smile, greeting others -- especially guests, sharing a cup of coffee and getting to know one another, inviting others to join in one of the many groups and ministries available, remembering those who are ill or alone with a call, a card or a visit. Let each of us do our part to extend Christ's love to others. If you would like to be part of the Congregational Care team, please contact Marla Thorne. NEED A NAMETAG? Envelopes are available for ordering nametags at the Kiosk. Cost is $5 for a nametage with pin and $6 for one with a magnet back. For more information, contact Marla Thorne. PRAYERS FOR OUR CHURCHES You are encouraged to pray for the churches and pastors of the Desert Southwest Conference. Some churches even send notes of encouragement. Did you know that the Western Jurisdictional Conference meets every four years, but only comes to our Conference once every 20 years and that the next times it will be here will be this coming July 13 and then not again until 2036? What is the Western Jurisdictional Conference? It s a gathering of our elected and appointed United Methodists from around the Western United States who meet every four years to provide leadership and especially to elect the next bishop in the West. If you have ever wondered how someone becomes a United Methodist bishop, this is your closest chance to witness the process! Could this be the year that one of our own clergy is elected bishop? Could this newly elected bishop one day be appointed to our conference? Come to Scottsdale, AZ, and experience it. As the Desert Southwest Conference, it is our pleasure to not only host but to provide hospitality for the entire conference. Let s show the West what extravagant hospitality really looks like! Please click here to sign up as soon as possible. The Western Jurisdiction Conference will be held July 13 to 16, 2016, at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton (5401 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, Z, 85250).

14 Page Lay Servant Ministries Do you hear the call from God to serve your church in a position of service and leadership? Are you not sure you have the skills to do the best job? Do you wish there was some program that you could attend that would help you build the skills that would help you be a better Christian-based leader and servant? Then, the Lay Servant Ministries program may be for you. Lay Servant Ministries (LSM) is a mission of the United Methodist Church. It is based on the principle that we are called to leadership and service. John Wesley was a strong proponent of using laity, members of the church, in key leader positions. But, to fill these roles, we need training, continued education and a support network. LSM offers classes throughout the year that address the needs of new and long time leaders and servants through the course called Basic--Lay Servant Ministries. This course focuses on Leading, Communicating and Caring. After that course it taken, a large number of advanced courses are available that include a vast number of topics from how to lead prayer, how to teach Bible study, how to provide caregiving and how to enhance stewardship. The classes are offered in a weekend format, starting on Friday evening from 6 to 9 PM and on Saturday from 8 AM to 5 PM. To participate in Basic, an endorsement is required from your Pastor or Administrative Board.
