Weekly Bible Study Contact: Caroline Kidd at ckidd@q.com 6:00 PM Worship Committee WEDNESDAY, JULY 12 5:30 PM United Methodist Women Bible Study Continuing the study of the book by James W. Moore, God Was Here and I Was Out to Lunch, this study explores how, due to our rigid preoccupation with our busy-ness and routines, we fail to sense or appreciate the presence of God all around us; consequently, we miss out on the chance to tap in to common sense, we miss out on the chance to love God and others, and we miss out on the chance to connect with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. In fifteen chapters, Moore highlights hallmarks of the Christian faith that are essential and life-giving for all persons, and which can be ours if only we learn to recognize God s majesty when it is near and open our lives to the change God offers. For more information, contact Gwen Rusk at gwenkcr@q.com In the month of July, help the Missions Team support the students of Chandler Unified School District by donating school supplies. Our July 2nd Communion Offering has been designated to be given to Families in Transition (FIT), the branch of Chandler Unified School District which assists students who are homeless and families facing homelessness. A child who is homeless may be sharing a home with another family, sleeping at different locations, awaiting foster care placement, living in emergency shelter or motels, campgrounds or similar environments, or a child who is on his or her own. These children face many obstacles that can prevent academic success. FIT steps in to keep those obstacles to a minimum to insure students can meet the academic rigors of school, and continue to enjoy the fun activities and clubs offered at schools. FIT insures students have transportation to and rom the school of their former residence, offers grants to students to be able to pay for fees associated with school programs, and offers financial assistance to families on the brink of homelessness. The Missions Team is also collecting backpacks and school supplies to help students get a great start to their new school year which begins July 24th. All supplies received by July 12th will be given to For Our City s annual Operation Back To School Drive. Donations received after July 12th will be given directly to schools most in need of extra supplies for their students. Supplies needed include: Box of 24 crayons Glue/glue sticks Washable Markers Erasers Pencil box or pouch Ruler Wide-ruled & college-ruled spiral notebooks Wide-ruled loose paper and college-ruled loose paper No. 2 pencils Pens (blue or black) Highlighters Flash Drive Index cards Twin-pocket folders Composition books New socks and underwear for boys and girls of all ages

5 MUSIC & WORSHIP Dear congregation of Chandler UMC, Recently, during his Sunday sermon, Jonathan eluded to the fact that I have been selecting hymns for our church. I appreciate the opportunity to do this because it has been a truly rewarding and spiritually enriching experience for me. After being "the guy" to select the hymns for our church for over a year, I wanted to share why I select the hymns we sing in church each Sunday to give you some background knowledge of where my thoughts are. The main reason the hymns are selected is so that the whole service is connected, rather than a disjointed beginning, middle, and end. Sometimes it's altogether unavoidable, in which case I try to make two main parts an exact opposite of each other (for example: darkness/light, trials/god is our strength, etc.). I take great care in choosing hymns that most everyone will know, or if it's something that may be unfamiliar, it needs to be sing-able by the second verse with more step motion in the music than skips and leaps. If I know a hymn is completely new for the congregation, then I will immediately discard it from my options until we can sing it for a few weeks in a row during the offertory. Even if hymn texts are a little more unfamiliar, I try to provide hymn tunes which are familiar. Another benefit of selecting hymns for each Sunday is that it's something that feeds me as a Christian because I get to go through countless verses of different hymns. You'd be surprised at how many verses depend on the one before it to tell a whole story. I recently came across an article* that said hymns teach theology, among other things, and I have to agree to some degree. Growing up a Missouri Synod Lutheran, I remember a lot of the hymns we sang, mostly because the youth of the congregation were expected to sing during the service, but also because I've always been drawn to music. During service, I would start going through the hymnal and begin to sing the songs in my head. It taught me a lot about God, and I could see connections to the Bible through the music. I hope this helps you gain some background for where I'm coming from in regard to hymn selection. I would like to thank Jonathan again for trusting me with the hymn selection process because it has been one of those things I look forward to whenever I get his new set of readings for his sermons. Each Sunday, I encourage you to pay specific attention to the lyrics while we sing the hymns to see what you get out of them. They are located immediately following the Order of Worship in the bulletin. Hopefully, you'll get touched by God in some way like I have. With Christ's Blessings, Adam Winters Director of Music *Please follow this link to the article mentioned entitled "9 Reasons Every Church Needs to Sing Hymns" by Jonathan Aigner: ponderanew/2016/01/26/9-reasons-every-church-needs-tosing-hymns/ WORSHIP IN JULY July 9, 2017 with Rev. Jonathan Arnpriester Scripture: Romans 11:1-2a, Sermon: 1 of 2 on Billy Joel s Bad Song July 16, 2017 While the Pastor is away, Rev. Jonathan Massey will share the message. July 23, 2017 with Rev. Jonathan Arnpriester Scripture: John 4:5-42 Sermon: 1 of 7 Seeing Old Stories With New Eyes July 30, 2017 with Rev. Jonathan Arnpriester Scripture: Mark 10:17-31 Sermon: 2 of 7 Seeing Old Stories With New Eyes Tell Me the Stories of Jesus No. 277 UMH Words: William H. Parker, 1885 Music: Frederick A. Challinor 1. Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear; things I would ask him to tell me if he were here: scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea, stories of Jesus, tell them to me. 2. First let me hear how the children stood round his knee, and I shall fancy his blessing resting on me; words full of kindness, deeds full of grace, all in the lovelight of Jesus face. 3. Into the city I d follow the children s band, waving a branch of the palm tree high in my hand; one of his heralds, yes, I would sing loudest hosannas, Jesus is King!
