1 SWANSEA FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Post Office Box 550 Swansea, SC NON PROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID LEXINGTON, SC PERMIT NO. 107 THE SIGNAL Return Service Requested The Signal is published monthly by the Swansea First Baptist Church of Swansea, SC. Volume 23 Issue 7 July 2012 The Virginia Mission Trip to Jonesville, Virginia Plainview Missionary Baptist Church July From Your Pastor s Heart I am really excited about the Mission Trip to Jonesville, Virginia. We will be working with the Plainview Missionary Baptist Church. The average attendance for this church is 40. They began to build this church 6 years ago. They have run out of money and help in completing this building. We hope to finish the punch list so they can get the final inspection for occupancy. We have 55 people as a part of this team. We will do a wide variety of tasks that week. There will be lots of painting, electrical and construction projects. We will also help conduct a Vacation Bible School and work with a mentally challenged assisted living home. We will be leaving right after service on Sunday, July 15th. Pray for us as we do the Lord s work and help this church! The Team Lyn and Jenna Kinard, Kary and Brenda Hoffman, Joe and Jeaneanne Sharpe, Hamp and Nancy Redmond, James, Melissa, JC, Bryce and Blaine Redmond, Brian and Vanne Sandifer, Faye Stabler, Christine and Rochelle Webb, Joe and Geri Galloway, Terry and Kathy Wilder, Ed Huggins, Kevin Frawley, Daniel, Serenity, Morgan and Avery Martin, Chad, Jane Ann, Hannah and Jane Ashley Meredith, David and Becky and Jenna Zeigler, Jonathan and Kaitlin Crider, Lori and Madison Myers, Dana and Sara Lackey, Jeff, Donna Joshua, Allison and Zach Smith, Jenna and Austyn Jeffcoat, Thomas Jumper, Shannon, Austin and Ashley Steen, Ronnie and Kellie Dasher and Deloris Zeigler. Dennis Stratton, a retired taxidermist who loves the Lord, will entertain the group with a message from Genesis. Dennis is very talented and also incorporates songs and animals throughout his message. You don t want to miss his jokes, music, animals, or message. Join the group on July 16, at 11:00am. There will be food, fun, fellowship, and you will leave feeling a wonderful closeness to God, the maker of our world. *The animals used by Dennis Stratton are all representations for permanent display. There will be no live animals. Seniors Will Visit Cheraw July 24 The proper pronunciation of Cheraw is open to debate, but according to David Sides, the town s director of tourism, it s properly pronounced Chuhraw. Town council has even adopted a policy on how it s supposed to be pronounced. In practice, however, many residents and visitors pronounce it Shuhraw. Cheraw is part of the National Civil War Discovery Trail and the Carolina s Revolutionary War Trail. Sarah Spruill, who is the town s historian, will be the tour guide for the trip. The group will see St. David s Church and the Lyceum, the Town Green, and a private historic residence. Most of the tour will be on the bus. The group will have to walk some, also. The cost of the tour is $5.00 per person plus your lunch at The River s Edge restaurant. Join this group on Tuesday, July 24, departure will be at 8:30am. There is a possibility that we will stop at McLeod s Farm on our way home if there is time
3 Student Ministry News It is hard to believe that the summer is almost half way over. We have already had a great week of Vacation Bible School. I appreciate Dusty Allen teaching the youth class. I am sure they had a great time and I know that we had a large group of students here for the week. VBS is always a great week in the life of our church and I appreciate everyone that helps put that on, you always do a great job. As I sit here and write this article we are in the middle of Community Changers. We have gotten off to a great start this week and I am looking forward to what God has in store for the rest of the week. This year we have 51 students that are participating for the week, that is the largest group that we have ever had. There are so many people that help us with Community Changers that I couldn t begin to name them all but I do appreciate everyone that helps us out. We look forward to being able to share with you about our week in the near future. Coming up on July 9-10 we will be heading to 6 Flags over Georgia. We will leave the church at 8:00am on Monday, July 9 and will spend the afternoon and evening in the park. We will spend the night in Atlanta and then return to the church by 4:00pm on Tuesday, July 10. As I write this we have 1 space available for a student to go and one space for a female chaperone. If you would like to go with us on this trip please let me know. The cost for this trip is $50 per person and if you have not filled out a permission form you will need to do so before we go. Finally, I want to invite all Students to meet me for lunch on Wednesday, July 11 th at the Valley Café at 12:00pm. I hope you will join us for a good time of fellowship but your lunch is on you. We will do this some more during the summer so come on Wednesday nights or check our Facebook group for more details. In Christ, John Harmon 2 Tim 2:15 *****Don t forget to check out the calendar for upcoming events***** Meredith Moments I love summer! Normally it is a time for me to regroup from a year of teaching. But for some reason, I feel busier than I have ever been. It reminds me of Terry s sermon a few years ago, Are you a Turkey or an Eagle? I think Terry s illustration was certainly enlightening as well as entertaining! However, to me, it brought home the idea of missions. I want to be an eagle that soars and explores! That is why I am excited about the opportunity we have to minister in Virginia. Well, the vision I have is a small Baptist church that we will physically, spiritually, and aesthetically change to make a difference in the name of the Lord. I know I plan on giving as much of myself into this project that I possibly can give. That means doing, Whatever! another Terry quote ;-) As we make preparations, there are some supplies that are still needed. If you would like to make a donation to SFBC and designate it to the Virginia Mission trip, it will be accepted and used for the supplies. I know to paint and put the murals on the walls will cost around two hundred dollars just for supplies. Therefore, any gift of support will be used to help with the needs of a Baptist church in Virginia. Thanks in advance for any contributions toward our efforts! As for choir in July, we will continue to practice as much as possible. I know vacations are coming up and I want you to enjoy your vacations. However, if you are in town, Jane Ann and I want to see you at practice. Also, we need some new faces. Because of graduation, etc the SFBC choir is in need to grow. Our choir would love to have some new folks join and help spread the gospel through song. If you are interested, let me know. Have a great July and try, yes I said try to stay cool! Until next time God Bless! In Christ, Chad

5 News From Your Parish Nurse Good Ole Summertime! No school. Sleeping in late. Families are taking vacation. Watermelons are getting ripe. Gardens are blooming all around. Tomato Sandwiches. Tanning. Swimming. Playing. Blessings. Most of all, a Heavenly Father who is always beside us, watching over us. What an awesome truth! As you enjoy the summer, remember to be as safe as possible with all of the fun activities going on. I will be away on a Mission Trip the week of July Please be in prayer that our group from Faith Baptist will fulfill God s purpose. If you need to contact me, please call the Parish Nurse office at , Monday - Friday 8am-4pm. If I am out of the office please leave a message and I will return your call. Love in Christ, Laura Sun Safety It is important to think about sun safety whenever you spend time outdoors, not just when you are at the beach or the pool. Following these steps will help protect you and your family from the sun s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. These steps provide the best protection when used together. The more steps you follow, the more protection you receive. Cover up - Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher - Wear a hat - Wear sunglasses that block UV rays -Limit direct sun exposure during midday - Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps - Hello from the Woman s Missionary Union I Hope everyone is having a great summer and wish you all safety in your travels. The month of May was a very busy for our Church and WMU. On May 5, 2012, the 6 th Annual Karen Smith Walk was held. The participation was outstanding. There were a lot more runners this year, including the organization Run for Our Sons which raises monies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy research. If you would like to learn more about Run for Our Sons, you can visit the website, RunForOurSons.org. The top three runners were: 1 st place, Bob Wells (23.18 minutes), 2 nd place, Jeff Jones (26.12 minutes) and 3 rd place when to Bradley Rucker (26.40). Congratulations to our top three finishers and everyone else. We also had more crafters this year at the Craft Fair and as always the Plants for Bibles was an outstanding success. The Sandwich and Salad Make and Auction were held on June 20, We had a great turnout for this event as well. There was lot of good food and fellowship. As you all are aware the money raised was to help buy supplies for the Virginia trip. The judges enjoyed tasting the wonderful sandwiches and salad and the results of their hard labor was: Sandwiches: 1 st place Daniel Martin, 2 nd place Faye Stabler and 3 rd place Brenda Hoffman. Salads: 1 st place Kaye Hoffman, 2 nd place Brenda Hoffman and 3 rd place Dale Wannamaker. The auction as usual was great fun and a lot of success. Many thanks to all the help with both the walk and auction. God Bless WMU Director Nancy Redmond
