5 Pentecost Sunday Grow in Faith With Us I n T o d a y s G o s p e l Pentecost Sunday "Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'" Then, he said it again. And then, "he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" Jesus brings peace, and he brings the Holy Spirit. Peace, in fact, is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Today, on this feast of Pentecost, we remember the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit that came upon those first apostles and the peace that came along with it. But we do more than remember. We also celebrate the presence of this same Spirit in our midst. Through the sacrament of baptism, every Christian receives the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in his or her soul. Thus, the gift of peace is already ours! The question is whether or not we have really begun to appreciate and utilize this most precious gift. Like the apostles who had locked themselves up "for fear of the Jews," we too are capable of imprisoning ourselves in our own anxieties. We fret and worry about the future, about our sufferings or our disappointments, and too often let these concerns stifle the true peace that Jesus offers us. But the Church today urges us to rejoice and to step out in faith like the apostles who left their fears behind them. Peace not only alleviates our fears, it also frees us to live our faith to the fullest, to have the courage to take risks, and to leave our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel. This is what we are called and, not only that, empowered to do. Anything less is a kind of spiritual poverty we bring upon ourselves. God has given us the gift of himself, present and available in every moment, every place, and every situation. May we recognize this most wonderful gift and give thanks with grateful hearts. 7 Pentecost Sunday Serve Others with Us Next weekend, June 10-11, St. Michael Parish will welcome Father Claudius Mpuya from the Archdiocese of Mwanza. The Archdiocese of Mwanza is located in the northwestern part of Tanzania, on the shores of Lake Victoria, which easily connects it to the neighboring countries of Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Kenya, and Uganda. It is one of the East African countries. Fr. Claudius will be speaking to us about the needs of the people in Mwanza. The Archdiocese of Mwanza is sponsoring the following projects to help take care of the following needs: Education: The archdiocese would like to establish a kindergarten in all parishes, in order to build up a strong faith foundation for children. They would also like to construct secondary schools for girls to provide them with a better education, so they may be better equipped for their future. Vocations: They are constantly caring for the formation of future priests; the archdiocese currently has 65 seminarians in major seminaries. The widespread poverty in Tanzania is affecting its capability to accept more vocations, due to the lack of resources. Monetary donations would help the archdiocese train more seminarians, which would then lead to more ordained priests for their own diocese and would allow us to send others overseas as missionaries. Water: The archdiocese has two types of water projects: both shallow wells and boreholes for poor people in rural areas. This helps the families with their needs, and also helps them take care of their animals. One of the greatest needs of the archdiocese at this time is the care of the large number of Orphans. These are children whose parents are absent or deceased- one or both parents, but especially the mother. The children essentially live on their own. To support and help these projects, and especially these children, the archdiocese can use financial and moral support so they can provide: Healthcare and immunizations for these children, since they are very susceptible to diseases Food, shelter, clothing, and other basic needs and necessities Spiritual and intellectual education and moral support when they get to be of school age Compensation for those who work to care for these children. St. Michael Parish will take up a second collection for the Archdiocese of Mwanza during Fr. Claudius s visit. Please be as generous as you can to help spread the love of Jesus throughout the world. If you would like more information about the Archdiocese of Mwanza, please visit beauful feast of Pentecost has le us the gi of the and guide. Negoang our can somemes be difficult to turn. When you tell the priest your sins, he has the power to remind you of God's forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross so your sins can be forgiven. Because God forgives you, he wants you to forgive others. Forgiving those who hurt you is very hard when you are angry and hurt. Ask God to fill you with love and make you strong enough to say, "I forgive you." Prayer - God, help me admit it when I am wrong.
