4 May 15, 2016 St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio We Remember... Our Deceased Relatives and Friends May 16 Rita Honerlaw 17 Pat Tobin Tom Schmidt Marie Bauer 19 Frank Bludau, Sr. 22 Nancy Dynes Janice Gillen Leo C. Woycke In Today s Gospel... Next Week s Readings Readings for the Upcoming Week Pentecost Sunday The Most Holy Trinity "And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always." Pentecost fulfilled this promise. The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles and nothing was ever the same again. This event is often referred to as the "birthday" of the church. It took Pentecost--and the power of the Spirit--to embolden the apostles to begin their ministry of preaching and baptizing. Conversions began to happen and the early church began to grow. And all of this took place without Jesus' earthly presence among them. This is one of the most encouraging elements of the practice of our Christian faith. We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God dwells within us and empowers us. We believe that even though we never walked with Jesus and the apostles, we are nonetheless accompanied by the same Spirit who is always available to us! We only need to stir up this Spirit within our souls by praying sincerely, "Come, Holy Spirit!" The special hymn of today's feast, called the sequence, does just this. It also expresses well the package of "benefits" that come from the presence of the Advocate among us: "You, of comforters the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe." And not only do we receive these personal blessings, but the Church herself also receives a tremendous gift. As Jesus said, "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit... will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you." It is only through this divine guidance from on high that the Church has the power and privilege to teach and guide us who are still here below. Special Anniversaries The Archdiocesan Anniversary Mass for couples celebrating their 50 th wedding anniversaries during 2016 will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, downtown Cincinnati, at the regularly-scheduled 4:30 p.m. Mass. Please notify the Parish Office by June 15, 2016 if you are celebrating your 25 th, 50 th, 60 th, 65 th, 70 th, or 75 th anniversary during Please call the St. Michael Reservation Line ( , Option #7) and leave your names and anniversary date. The St. Michael celebration for these special anniversaries during 2016 will be held here in the fall. 6 May 15, 2016 St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio Homebound Ministry At the conclusion of Mass every Sunday, members of the St. Michael Parish Homebound Ministry Program are called forth from the congregation by the celebrant to collect their pyx containing the Blessed Sacrament. The Homebound Ministers depart; their mission: to take the Blessed Sacrament to members of St. Michael Parish who are unable to attend and participate at Mass with the parish community. Members of the Homebound Ministry program spend a few minutes visiting with the parishioner, and in prayer, distribute the Eucharist. The St. Michael Parish Homebound Ministry program consists of teams of four members who are scheduled one Sunday a month to visit with a homebound parishioner. The time commitment is minimal, but the rewards are a true blessing! If you are reading this and are interested in exploring the possibility of becoming a team member with the Homebound Ministry Program, we welcome you! The time commitment is approximately one hour a month. You do not have to be a Eucharistic Minister at Mass in order to participate in this ministry. For more information, or to shadow a team member on their visit, Jo-Anne at jcs6687@gmail.com. Serve with Us Help us to Measure Up For forty years, the Knights of Columbus has had a vision to support people with Developmental Disabilities through a program called Measure Up. We support events such as the free throw competition at the Bobby Fairfax School for the developmentally challenged, and of course, St. Joseph Home on Wyscarver Road. Our primary fundraiser that allows us to provide this assistance is our direct collection campaign outside local businesses (you may have seen us in our yellow pinnies). We hope to raise over $425,000 throughout Ohio. 80% of the monies raised are allocated by local councils to projects/ facilities within their own communities (the remaining 20% is used for statewide programs). We were thus able, last year, to help the residents at St. Joseph Home with over $1,300. We would like to enlist the generous folks of St. Michael to help us this year. We will be collecting after all masses on the weekend of May HELP US TO HELP ST. JOSEPH HOME! 6 The Father Lay Generation Summer Trip Thursday June 2, 2016, 8:45 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Congregations of Abraham Tour. We will meet our bus at Sharonville Elementary School and begin our exploration of the congregations of Abraham s descendants in faith with a tour of the Isaac M. Wise Synagogue (also called Plum St. Temple) in downtown Cincinnati. After we explore the Judaic tradition, we will have a hot buffet lunch at Washington Platform, which will include fried chicken, glazed ham, salads, marinated vegetables, assorted cookies and pies, and coffee, tea, or soda (tip is included). A cash bar is available. We will then move forward in time to Christianity with a tour of our own St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. We will conclude with a visit to the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati in West Chester*. We will be back at Saint Michael about 4:30 p.m. *Please note The Islamic Center requests that visitors observe the Islamic requirement for dress and demeanor when entering the prayer area. Women are asked to bring scarves for head covering and wear either skirts that are at least mid-calf length, or loose fitting pants and long-sleeved blouses. Likewise, men are asked to dress modestly, which means that they should wear loose-fitting long pants, and sleeved shirts. Also, when entering the prayer area, it will be necessary to remove your shoes, as the prayer areas are fully carpeted (so wear nice socks!) The cost for this day of fellowship and learning is $ For reservations, call the Parish Office at , option #7, by May 26. Please include your name, home phone number and, if possible, a number for a cell phone that you will carry the day of the trip. Payment can be dropped off or sent to the Parish Office. If you have questions, please call Caroline or Moses Warnow at Plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m. at Sharonville Elementary School (11150 Maple St.) to board the bus. The bus departs at 8:45 a.m. sharp. The Father Lay Generation is a social group open to all parishioners age 60 and older and their spouses.

7 Pentecost Sunday Our festival is fast approaching (June 10-12), and our plans for our annual summer weekend of fun are quickly developing! This booth has been incredibly successful the last few years, thanks to your continued generosity. Booth Chairs There are still a few booths that need leadership for the festival. Many booths are chaired by two or three families. This is a great way to get involved with the festival. Volunteers We need your help! The success of the festival depends on the efforts of volunteers. Booth Chairs will soon be reaching out asking for shifts to be filled. Please be generous with your time. Festival Set Up Team Festival set up is a big job, and many hands make for light work. Set up is Wednesday through Friday of festival week, and tear down is the Monday after the festival.
