Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail. We ask for Your blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed. This Father's Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways--both big and small--they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent; grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors, and coaches, and the women of our families. For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do well by their children and by You. In Your Holy name, O God, we pray. 5 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Worship With Us I n T h i s W e e k s G o s p e l The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ "The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?'" From the beginning, the Eucharist has been a source of controversy. Some people have always found the teaching difficult to accept. But as Catholics, the Blessed Sacrament is at the heart of our worship and our spirituality; we go to Mass to share in the holy sacrifice of Jesus' body and blood, and we receive spiritual nourishment from partaking of this heavenly food. As Jesus himself tells us in today's Gospel, "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." From this passage it is clear that Jesus intended the Eucharist to be a tremendous gift for us, for "whoever eats this bread will live forever." This of course is because the bread is Christ's "flesh for the life of the world." In other words, just as he gave his body on the cross to save us from our sins, so too this same flesh is given for us at every Mass to strengthen our weakness and unite us more deeply to our Savior. Receiving Communion isn't like taking a magic pill, however. We must beware of reducing this sacrament to an empty ritual or a foolproof guarantee of heaven. No, it is quite possible to receive Communion unworthily and reject its spiritual efficacy. Just like the benefits of a healthy meal can be undone by a habit of binging on junk food, so too we can prevent holy Communion from having its full benefits when we crowd our souls with vices and sins. If, on the other hand, we wish to let this sacrament of divine grace flourish, we should receive it with a sincere spirit of gratitude and reverence, praying that we may be made worthy to receive such a gift. Liturgical Publications, Inc. F r o m t h e Pa s t o r... Every five years since the early 1990s, the priests of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati have been gathering together in a three-day Convocation. It s an opportunity for us to spend time together in conversation, in prayer, and in relaxation. For the twenty years I was Director of the Office for Priestly Formation, I was the staff person for four of these Convocations. This year, as the Chair of the Presbyteral Council (the council of priests who advise the Archbishop) of the Archdiocese, I will serve as the MC for the sessions; this simply means that I get to call to order each of several sessions we gather for each day. This year, our principal speaker will be Father Paul Turner, a renowned pastor and scholar on the liturgy and sacraments, from the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, in Missouri. He will lead us in conversations about how to reinvigorate the sacramental life of the parish; the Sacraments, of course, are those privileged moments when we encounter God through sacramental signs. Our Convocation (in Dublin, Ohio, outside of Columbus) begins Monday afternoon, June 19, and ends at noon on Thursday, June 22. I respectfully request your prayers for all of the priests (over 160 of us) and our two bishops, who will be participants in this meeting. 5

6 June 18, 2017 St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio Grow in Faith With Us Yo u t h M i n i s t r y Missionaries on the Move This Sunday, June 18, 20 members of the St. Michael Parish Youth Ministry team will be leaving after 8:00 Mass for a mission trip to Clarksville, Georgia. These teens and adults will be refurbishing houses, building sheds, landscaping, painting, and whatever else they are asked to do, to help the people in the Appalachian Community. It is a great way to share the love from Saint Michael to the greater community. Please keep all of the team in your prayers. N e w V o t i v e C a n d l e S ta n d s As a reminder, our new votive candle stands are now available in the Spinner Street entrance for your use. These new stands have increased the number of votive candles available, from 20 to 40. The new candles are smaller, 3-day candles. Because of the smaller size, we will now ask for a $2 donation, rather than $3, which can be placed in a donation box that will be attached to the candle stand. In order to ensure that everyone who wants to has the opportunity to light a candle in prayer, we ask that each person light no more than one candle at a time. Our hope is that, with additional candles, this area can be used even more as a place for personal prayer. In fact, you may have noticed new paint that has already improved this space. We are always grateful for the work of the Altar Society, whose annual craft and bake sale helps to purchase these larger items for the parish. All volunteers must attend a VIRTUS training class AND be VIRTUS compliant before interacting with children in any capacity at St. Michael Parish. To be VIRTUS compliant, you must attend a VIRTUS class, complete a background check, and remain current in reading your training bulletins. The cost of completing the background check is $ You may either pay for the background check with a credit card (and we can then reimburse you) or you can contact Patty in the Parish Office for a background check payment token. Our next VIRTUS training session is scheduled for Monday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. This session will be held in the cafeteria and will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. You must arrive on time and stay for the entire length of the class to receive your Certificate of Attendance. The Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ given at Communion time during Mass. We hear the words of Jesus in the Eucharistic Prayer and the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. When you eat this bread and drink of this cup, you will have life everlasting. Prayer - Father, I thank you for sharing your Son, Jesus Christ with me. Something to Draw - Draw a picture of Jesus sharing bread and wine with the apostles. Mission for the Week - I will take flour, salt, yeast, dried milk, and sugar to the homeless shelter. G r a d e s 2-3 Sharing the Gospel - When God's people were in the desert with Moses, they got hungry. So, God gave them sweet manna from heaven every morning. It was all they needed to live. God sent Jesus to us from heaven, too, but he's much better than manna. Through Jesus, we can live forever with God. Prayer -God, thank you for sending Jesus from heaven.
