3 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time In Today s Gospel... Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time "What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?" Profit and gain. Most of us would be happy to experience these things. In our capitalist economy, profit is the point. Gain is the goal. Thought of in terms of money or possessions, having plenty of them often offers us a sense of security and sometimes a kind of pleasure. But today Jesus warns us about putting too much stock in this kind of worldly security. It's important to recognize that Jesus isn't condemning money or possessions in and of themselves. But he is advocating a radical rethinking of our priorities. In a way, he turns everything upside down. Instead of giving us tips to "gain the whole world," Jesus instructs us to take up our cross and follow him, and to lose our life for his sake. This is not a message about gain but about loss. At least, that's how it appears on the surface. When we take up our cross--embracing the sacrifices that come with our vocation, or accepting the sufferings that inevitably cross our path--it may not gain us immediate relief, but it will unite us to Christ who suffered for us on the cross. When we lose our life for his sake--giving of our time, our talents, and our treasure for the sake of those we love or those in need--it may not fill our pocketbooks, but it will fill our hearts. Jesus wants our lives to be full. Full of love, full of peace, full of joy. Today he reminds us to be sure we aren't so full of other "stuff" that we have no room left for what truly satisfies. Jesus promises that in losing our life for his sake, we will find it in the end. May we have the confidence to put our trust in this promise. Liturgical Publications Inc. The Joy of the Gospel Pope Francis Quotes from Evangelii Gaudium compiled by Susan Vogt Introduction: A Joy Ever New, a Joy Which is Shared My child, treat yourself well, according to your means Do not deprive yourself of the day s enjoyment (Sir 14:11,14) 4 Please Remember in Your Prayers... Parishioner Edwin (Pat) Tunning and Barbara Hall, mother of parishioner Mary Zeller, who died recently. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Who We Are and What We Do The liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the Eucharist... form but one single act of worship (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy y, 56) B efore the Second Vatican Council, Catholics knew when they had to arrive at Mass: before the Offertory. If you arrived by then on a Sunday or Holyday, you satisfied the obligation to attend Mass. So, what about the first part of the Mass? Was that optional? No, but it was seen as different, both in kind and in importance, from the second part of the Mass. The Council changed that with this teaching that the two primary parts of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, form but one single act of worship. Christ comes to us in his divine Word before he comes to us in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. We are nourished with heavenly wisdom, then with heavenly food. The Mass is not a clockwork of discrete parts, easily taken apart. The Mass is an organic whole. The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: Written by Kristopher W. Seaman. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, Parking Lot Safety As St. Michael Parish School begins the new school year, we would like to remind parishioners to watch out for our students in the parking lot during the school day. Our students cross the parking lot several times during the day going to our different buildings, and our younger students may not always pay attention while crossing the lot. Also, the new school year also brings the start of afterschool meetings, events, and practices. Our parish campus will be busy with many activities, including the Religious Education Program on Monday evenings (beginning in September). Please drive safely! Deacon Ken Effective January 1, 2015, Deacon Ken DeHanes will be retiring from his position as Pastoral Associate for Pastoral Ministry and Care. Deacon Ken joined the pastoral staff in July 2008 as Pastoral Associate for Adult Faith Formation. He was ordained a deacon in April We will be posting for a new Pastoral Associate in the near future. Please join us in wishing Deacon Ken well as he begins this new journey! 7

More information is available in the Gathering Space and online at St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio Rocking Chair Retreat Join Jeanne Hunt the weekend of September at the Jesuit Spiritual Center for a Rocking Chair Retreat. There are four times in a woman s life when she encounters a rocking chair: as a child rocked in the chair by her mother, as a mother rocking a child, as a midlife woman enjoying the rocker for pleasure and as a wise woman resting and reflecting on life s journey in that chair. Each of these chapters of a woman s life have a particular grace and energy. Come and explore the stages in a woman s life through Jeanne Hunt s humorous and engaging style. The Retreat will provide reflection and encouragement no matter in which stage of life you find yourself. The Rocking Chair Retreat begins Friday evening with dinner. The retreat ends with lunch at noon on Sunday. The retreat is open to anyone who is seeking a deeper relationship with God in prayer. You do not have to be a part of a Parish or Group to attend. The retreat costs $225 to attend. More information is available in the Gathering Space and online at "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? 10 August 31, 2014 St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio Grades K-1 Sharing the Gospel - Sometimes it's hard to give of your time, or your toys, or even to share your friends. Sometimes you want to be selfish and keep everything for yourself. This is not what Jesus did. He kept sharing God's love all the time. He shared so much that he even gave his life for us by dying on the cross. Jesus wants us to share like he did, to give of ourselves even when we want to be selfish. Children s Corner Grades 2-3 Sharing the Gospel - If it were up to Peter, Jesus would never have died on the cross. Peter did not want to see his dear friend get hurt. It could have been tempting for Jesus to listen to Peter. But Jesus did not come to be happy or comfortable. Jesus came to die on the cross and rise again. He came to take your sins away. Jesus gave up his own life so that your life could be saved. He did it for you. Prayer - Heavenly Father, give me strength to share your love.
