1 RISE & SHINE! The Rev. Christina van Liew Rector 147 Campbell Avenue Williston Park, NY Mrs. Marie Callahan, Parish Secretary Office Hours: 9:00am-1:00pm, Mon-Thu Office telephone: Fax: Web site: Rise & Shine Editor Jane Colgrove March 2012 Volume 7 Issue 7 Rector s Reflections Yesterday I spent the day in Sabbath with other clergy. It was wonderful to be still, to focus on God. Especially considering how busy we all are in our daily lives. We explored how the Jewish practice of Sabbath informs our Christian perspective. It was kind of a wake-up call to realize that God thinks rest is so important for wellbeing that God created and kept Sabbath by resting on the Seventh Day of creation. In case we think that s just for God (or clergy), Commandment #3 leaves no doubt all God s people are to keep Sabbath. What is Sabbath? Simply put, resting in covenant with God. Thomas Aquinas wrote, The Jews keep holy Sabbath in memory of the first creation; but Christ at His coming brought about a new creation, through grace, which came by the Resurrection And thus, because the Resurrection took place on Sunday, we celebrate that day. We struggled with the part about ceasing all creativity (as God did) or work (as Orthodox Jews still do). In our more flexible stance we agreed there are various ways to keep Sabbath, from a 10-minute Sabbath-break (has anyone noticed that sign on my door?) to a day at the beach or in the woods without phones, head-sets or chatter to distract us from being with God. Some of us find listening to beautiful music or even creating words or works of art is a way of resting in God. A typical Do List on a Day Off is not. The idea is to be in kyros God s time, not chronos - the world s time for as much time as we can (up to one day a week). Dear Resurrection People, A Word from our Warden Where did February go? I have heard people pose that question a number of times this week. Last month was certainly a busy time at Resurrection. We held our annual parish meeting on the 5 th and, among other things, welcomed new Vestry member, Colin Kaletsky. We regretfully heard that FloEllen Zadik would not seek another term. While her decision is completely understandable, we will miss her clear and insightful voice at our monthly meetings. She has served faithfully as a member of St. Andrew s Bishop s Committee, the Parish Council, the Vestry-Elect and, most recently, the Vestry. On February 19 th, we gathered in the undercroft after Service to celebrate Fat Sunday. The enhanced coffee hour featured pancakes, sausage, bacon, bagels, cake and a number of other goodies. It provided us an opportunity to enjoy a special meal and fellowship before starting the penitential season of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Our regular Sunday Coffee Hour allows us to connect with members of our parish family and welcome new members that may be present. They are an important part of our life at Resurrection and depend on volunteer hosts. They need not be elaborate. Coffee and is just fine. You can find the sign-up sheet for coffee hour hosts in the narthex. If you have any questions about (Continued on page 3)
3 JOY IN SHARING 3 (continued from page 1) A few excellent readings about Sabbath include: Rabbi Abraham Heschel: The Sabbath, Senator Joe Lieberman: The Gift of Rest, Lauren Winner: Mudhouse Sabbath. Our Book of Common Prayer has many prayers to help us enter Sabbath. My favorite is on page 138: O God, you will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on you; for in returning and rest we shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be our strength (Isaiah 26:3;30:15). I d love to see that in our courtyard! Lent is a season well suited for mindful Sabbathkeeping. Aquinas wrote, the quiet of the Sabbath signifies the rest of His body in the sepulcher [and so] we keep [Holy} Saturday in veneration of the Blessed Virgin, in whom remained a firm faith on the Saturday while Christ was dead. Can you guess where we will have our brief Holy Saturday prayers at 10 am? Keeping Sabbath anytime, but especially in Lent and Holy Week, is a good time to remember God s ultimate act of love: the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and ponder what that means to us. Be still, know God loves you, and rest in His Sabbath. There is no better way to be ready for Resurrection Living! Thank you Rhonda & Colin, Joan & Paul, and Donald for a scrumptious Fat Sunday breakfast! Everything from décor, community, and especially food CAMP DEWOLFE As a board member for going-on six years, it is a great joy to see how this beloved camp is being transformed. Finally it is becoming what it always wanted to be: a natural setting for people of all ages, but especially children, to engage in community and empower them to live out an outward and visible expression of the love and grace of Christ (from the vision statement) while having fun, too. Our new directors are engaging, energetic, faithful and simply fantastic. Come to the grand reopening on Sunday April 15 (arrive before Evensong in the Chapel with the Bishop, which starts at 4:30, followed by tours, food, etc.). If you come you will also see our beautiful parish banner (thank you Jane!) hanging from the rafters in the newly renovated dining hall. (see flyer on pg. 6) This year we are helping to sponsor William Buckley to attend camp. The cost of a week is $495. Trish & Karen have already reduced that to $395 with the $100 deposit. Can we raise $395 in March? We ll pass a second plate on March 25, the Sunday after ECLI s Appeal is done. That way William s family will have time to apply for a scholarship if we can t meet $395. Another way to sponsor the Camp, which is a great place for groups and individuals to go for retreats, is to Leave a Legacy by buying a brick with our name on it (for the new courtyard) for $150. The deadline to get a brick in place for the grand re-opening is APRIL 1 st. Perhaps if we raise more than we need for William we can buy a brick with that! As a board member I am becoming a Friend of Camp DeWolfe for $300. Perhaps in September, after William shares his camp experience with us, our parish will want to become a Friend. CvL (Continued from page 2, A Word from our Warden) hosting or co-hosting a coffee hour please don t hesitate to ask me. March, too, promises to be a busy month at Resurrection. Don t forget to check the calendar and be a part of as many upcoming events as possible. Blessings, Joan

5 STRENGTH IN HOPE 5 PROJECT LOL You see in this issue that the Town of North Hempstead is actively responding to the need to help our seniors age in place. Rosemarie Cavallaro (Director of Parish Social Ministry at St. Aidan) and I got to thinking, What about the younger folks who are struggling to live here? Already we have hosted one Creative Caring Community Conversation to address that question. It has morphed into Project LOL: Living on Long Island. What s working? What s needed? The plan is to identify current efforts for neighbors to help neighbors, to be part of the solutions, not stuck in the problems, and to spread the word so everyone who wants to know can find out easily. That way we also find where there are gaps, and can consider appealing to the Town of North Hempstead (and/or other sources) for help. Already we have over 20 civic leaders and members of the Chamber of Commerce signed up to participate. The first meeting of Project LOL is Monday, April 16 at 7pm. Watch for flyers (the location is TBA as of press time). CvL PUPPIES BEHIND BARS Puppies Behind Bars trains inmates to raise puppies to become service dogs for the disabled and explosive detection canines for law enforcement. Here on Long Island we have a gifted dogwhisperer/rehabilitator, and trainer of guide dogs named Polly Hanson Greenberg. She now devotes most of her efforts to Puppies Behind Bars to train pups for disabled returning veterans of combat. (continued next column) I met Polly when I was a Curate in Cold Spring Harbor (her neighborhood), and was clueless how to train my two new puppies Gracie and Georgie. As a favor, and comic relief from rehabilitating Rottweilers, she and her pack of dogs socialized my two. She is very excited to be working with Puppies Behind Bars. Training inmates to raise puppies for returning combat veterans is a win-win ministry. Everybody benefits, and the love is boundless. We have agreed this is the beneficiary of our fall Pet-a-Palooza half the proceeds will go to Puppies Behind Bars. She will have a booth as well, and of course this will attract a lot of attention in the community! Polly will be with us on Sunday March 25 to tell us more. Hopefully she will bring one of her guide-dogs (yes, we will bless any four-legged worshipers). ~ CvL
