We are named for the mystery and the hope of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, because we know that dying is not the last word, God s love is. This is an impossible paradox for the world to grasp. It s challenging enough for us! But here we are in the mystery and the hope of the resurrection. God is full of surprises, making the impossible become possible. God s power and love transformed a shameful death into the sign of hope and the means of new life in God s love. This gift is not just for us! It is for all people who receive this good news in their hearts and worship Jesus as Lord. We will discover throughout the Easter season how Jesus plan for all people was honored by the early church. But first, be must go through Holy Week. We cannot be resurrection people without the Cross. Holy Week is when we learn and experience the fullness of our identity as resurrection people. As we participate, from Palm Sunday through Good Friday, we walk with Jesus in his last steps before dying. We face our own fears about suffering and death, and we learn how to embrace them with mercy and grace, as Jesus did. If we are present on Holy Saturday for the prayers before setting up the church, we will find this day before the crucifixion and the resurrection a sacred reminder of the holiness of death, of not-knowing, of emptiness is blessed with Mary s faith that God still had a plan for her Son and for us all. If we have ears to hear and hearts to receive, we also will have hope deep within us during this journey. Encouraged by the warm weather many plants have poked their heads through the soil. The beautiful display of daffodils in the courtyard is a joy to behold. Signs of new life are all around us. New life is certainly visible at Resurrection. On the first Sunday of the month, Meri Halem, along with sponsors Jane and Rhonda, began preparing for her baptism.. Our parish s response to the ECLI campaign was extremely generous and will result in a percentage of our donation being returned to Resurrection. The Lenten study group met every Monday in March to discuss the thought provoking little book, A Practical Christianity, by Jane Shaw. Easter baskets for Episcopal Community Services were made available and every one was taken home by a parishioner and brought back filled. Last Sunday we welcomed Polly Hansen Greenberg and her puppy, Maxwell. She gave a wonderful talk on her experiences as a dog trainer and her involvement in the program Puppies Behind Bars. This program will be the recipient of 50% of the proceeds from our October Pet-A-Palooza. I want to extend a special thank you to our Audit Committee Doreen Banks, John Lasek and Robert Petraglia. They met on March 11 th and 25 th and will meet again this morning (4/1). They work hard to make sure our books are in order, all is transparent and the audit report is submitted to the Diocese in a timely fashion. I am always amazed at how much our small church family, led by Mother Christina, accomplishes each month. We are the little church that could, moved forward by an overwhelming faith and the certainty that the message we have to deliver is one we must share with the surrounding community. 5 5 STRENGTH IN HOPE Palm Sunday (or Passion Sunday) Holy Week begins with the sixth Sunday in Lent. This Sunday observes the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that was marked by the crowds who were in Jerusalem for Passover waving palm branches and proclaiming him as the messianic king. The Gospels tell us that Jesus rode into the city on a donkey, enacting the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, and in so doing emphasized the humility that was to characterize the Kingdom he proclaimed. The irony of his acceptance as the new Davidic King (Mark 11:10) by the crowds who would only five days later cry for his execution should be a sobering reminder of the human tendency to want God on our own terms. Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday There are a variety of events that are clustered on this last day before Jesus was arrested that are commemorated in various ways in services of worship. These include the last meal together, which was probably a Passover meal, the institution of Eucharist or Communion, the betrayal by Judas (because of the exchange with Jesus at the meal), and Jesus praying in Gethsemane while the disciples fell asleep. Most liturgies, however, focus on the meal and communion as a way to commemorate this day. Good Friday, or Holy Friday Friday of Holy Week has been traditionally been called Good Friday or Holy Friday. On this day, the church commemorates Jesus arrest (since by Jewish customs of counting days from sundown to sundown it was already Friday), his trial, crucifixion and suffering, death, and burial.
