2 Dear Parishioners PASTORAL LEADER S NOTES Below is a statement from Bishop David L. Ricken that we received last week regarding immigration and family separation on the U.S./Mexico border that you should know about: Like many of you, I have followed the news of what is happening on our border to parents and children, and I have prayerfully reflected on how to respond to this issue. I am pleased to see that the president has taken steps to end the practice of family separation at our borders. However, this decision addresses the symptoms, not the problem. We must acknowledge that the current situation is the result of years of haphazard policy on immigration. The bishops of the United States have consistently called for comprehensive immigration reform based on the following principles: 1. Persons have the right to find opportunities in their homeland. 2. Persons have the right to migrate to support themselves and their families. 3. Sovereign nations have the right to control their borders. 4. Refugees and asylum seekers should be afforded protection. 5. The human dignity and human rights of undocumented migrants should be protected. Even with this new executive order, our immigration policy still does not reflect these principles. For this reason, today I call on Catholics and people of good will to reach out to their political leaders in Congress and the administration to work towards comprehensive immigration reform based on these principles. This will require people to put aside their own political agendas and find policies that affirm the dignity of all human beings. Doing so is the only way we can avoid situations like this in the future. In addition, I encourage all of us to pray for migrant families, especially those who leave their homes due to violence or persecution. Pray, too, for our political leaders that they may be guided by the Holy Spirit to, once and for all, enact comprehensive immigration reform. May the peace of Christ transform each of us to more fully respect the dignity of all human beings! During these beautiful summer time days I m sure many of you are taking the time to go on a picnic. Even if that simply means eating your lunch outside in the backyard or at a local park alone or with your family you might want to say this prayer before you begin: BLESSING OF A PICNIC Gracious God, we gather among the blossoms and bees, the boughs and branches, the beauty and bounty of your creative goodness. Give us eyes and ears to recognize your glory in the splendor that surrounds us, in the vast landscape and the small, veined leaf, in the water s waves and the wasp s warnings, in the crazed squirrel and the crow s squawking. As we spread out our cloth on this sacred earth and lay out our simple feast, give us hearts of gratitude for the blessings of nature and nourishment that we receive over and over again. Amen. -Sr. Nancy Bauer, OSB Here s a note I received last week from Kathy O Brien. She is the Pastoral Associate at our Sister Parish in Erwin, TN who recently suffered a heart attack: Sr. Pam & all at both St. Mary s, Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. Do continue prayers for me for my total recovery. Pray too for St. Michael s as we move to our new home. Love and prayers, Kathy Be sure to check out St. Michael the Archangel s website at or check out their Facebook page to find pictures of their building project. Sr. Pam
3 STEWARDSHIP NEWS (Winn. & Omro) Impact How do you see God? We do not see God with our physical eyes, and that is a challenge for most of us occasionally. It is what leads some to disregard faith as nothing more than wishful thinking. Yet, we do have signs of God s presence. The more attuned we become to it, the more we may see God, and are assured of his presence in moments of difficulty and able to witness to the love of God when family and friends struggle in their lives. In the Eucharist Christ is present in a special and particular way in the Eucharist. Christ is present in the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of the Lord, the word proclaimed, and the presence of the priest who stands for and with us as Christ. What we sometimes miss is that we also experience Christ s presence with and in the people. All of us together, as members of Christ s body, share God s presence with one another. But what if we lose sight of this great mystery, or have moments in which we just can t see God at Mass? Where do we look? Through love God is love. We can say this so often that we become blind to its meaning. Think about it this way: when we experience love in a close relationship or an unexpected moment of love among a group of friends, we are seeing God. In those who need to know God s love Jesus tells us that we see God in the poor and weak, and especially through experiences of compassion and care for them. In the community Those who are involved in the parish see God in each other as we serve together side-by-side, and in our relationships with one another as we grow strong bonds as a community of faith. In creation and all things beautiful Who among us has not been struck by the beauty of creation or uplifting art and the sound of beautiful music? We gaze at the stars on a clear night, pause to take in the sound of a gentle rain or a garden brimming with color, and we see the magnificence of God. In times of peace and when we are unsettled We see God in moments of deep peace and consolation that can otherwise not be explained. We also see God when our conscience leads us to be unsettled as we face temptation to sin. Beyond sight and touch Sometimes, we rely on physical sight and touch to tell us what is real. In order to see God, we must open our minds and hearts to the mystery of God s love and look beyond the stuff that detracts from faith and faithful living. Through the eyes of faith Ultimately, we see God through the eyes of faith. We look for the blessings, even in the midst of trial; for the good and the beautiful, even on the busiest of days; for love, in times of joy, grief, pain, and pleasure; for Christ with and among us every time we gather at the table of the Lord. When our vision of God grows dim, we call upon others who help us to see him clearly again. And when they waver, we help them to see God in their midst. We have to look in order to see. How do you see God? Share how you see God, hear the stories of others, and explore the ways faith impacts life on our Everyday Impact Facebook page: Catholic Life and Faith, 2018 For more: Everyday-Impact Impact.
