2 PASTORAL LEADER S NOTES Dear Parishioners, The Alpha Experience is coming this fall to St. Mary s Churches! The Alpha Film Series is designed to take people on an epic journey exploring the basics of the Christian faith. This series is emotive and epic in scale and scope. Each episode will explore a different question about our faith and will feature inspiring stories and interviews, as well as visual illustrations and motion graphics. Bishop Ricken is asking ALL of the parishes in the Green Bay Diocese to provide the Alpha Experience for everyone in their faith communities. That means we will be two of the 156 parishes who will be part of this experience beginning in September. Our goal with Alpha is to help everyone in the parish, both young and old, encounter Jesus Christ and become more engaged in the church as we develop relationships within the parish. By the time you read this article many of you will have already received information about how we will be incorporating the Alpha Experience into our Faith Formation programs during the fall semester from September through December. You will notice that not only will there be changes in the time and day of our Faith Formation program but we are also asking that you come to these ten sessions with your family so that all of us, children AND parents, can grow in our Catholic faith together. This is going to be a new and exciting year for us as a parish community and I hope that you will say yes to this opportunity for ALL of us to become the best-version-of-ourselves as we explore the questions of life, faith and meaning through the Alpha Experience. For the past ten years Fr. Bill Hower has been a great help to our parishes when our regular priests are gone for a weekend. Two weeks ago Fr. Bill suffered a stroke and will not be available to help us out for the next few months. I know he always enjoys being in Winneconne and Omro to celebrate Mass with us and I am sure he would appreciate our support and prayers during his time of healing and recovery. Please keep Fr. Bill in your prayers and here is his home address if you would like to send him a note or a card: Fr. Bill Hower 2430 Springmill Rd Oshkosh, WI UPDATE on MISSION TRIP to Joppa Mountain, Tennessee! Two weeks ago in Omro Rodney Silvis shared with us some detailed information about a mission trip to Joppa Mountain, TN which will take place during the week of August 19-25, He told us that volunteers would experience five days of service, plus participate in daily prayer, mass and faith building, while helping to strengthen the Catholic presence in this area of Tennessee. Currently we have FIFTEEN people interested in this mission trip and we are able to bring a group of as many as 24. If you are interested in participating in this mission trip you are invited to attend an organizational meeting on: Tuesday, April 24, at 6:00pm in Omro. 3 STEWARDSHIP NEWS (Winn. & Omro) HOPE IN THE CROSS AND RESURRECTION OF THE LORD Why do we wear crucifix or hang one on a wall? People sometimes ask why Catholic Christians have a corpus, the body of the crucified Christ, on their cross. Does this deny the resurrection? We wear and honor the symbol of Jesus death, the cross, not only because he suffered and died there, but because he conquered it. The cross is our Christian sign of hope hope in our new life in Christ. In today s world, Christians face challenges, even persecution, for our beliefs and the actions that result from our Christian faith. It is all the more important that today, and for these coming days of the Easter season, we celebrate the resurrection. We celebrate the fact that Jesus triumphed over evil, death, and persecution. That sacrifice saves us from our wayward ways, all the times that we fail to live as God s good and holy people. Christ s sacrifice is the ultimate act of mercy. On the cross, Jesus arms were stretched between heaven and earth in an everlasting sign of God s great love. (Eucharistic prayer for Reconciliation I) Especially during the Easter season, we celebrate and must live the very truth that Christ died and rose and lives in and through us today, through the power of the Holy Spirit. The resurrection brings with it a great responsibility. We are to be Christ s hands and feet, the ones that were pierced through suffering and sacrifice. Christ s sacrifice calls us to give of ourselves more than we think we are able. Christ s resurrection insures us that in doing so, we will find new life in living Christ s mission of love.
