1 Volume 23, Issue 16 February 2015 Pilmoor Pilot Pilmoor Memorial United Methodist Church A family of Christians who love God, follow Jesus, and serve others. Wingo s Words Got To or Get To? Our vernacular makes a difference! If, I ve got to do (you fill in the blank), there is an implied element of drudgery, dread, and heaviness to the task at hand. Take, for example: I can t, I ve got to babysit my little sister. (complete with eye-rolling). Ugh. But if we make one editorial change, if we transform the O to an E making the got become the get, like magic our perspective shifts to one of privilege, enthusiasm and anticipation. I can t, I get to babysit my little sister! Oh, what fun we ll have. Suddenly, we move from a place of obligation to a place of opportunity. The same is true for our giving. When giving is an obligation, we will give to be sure because we re obliged to do so. But giving as an obligation will not bring us the joy that giving as an opportunity will provide! As faithful disciples, we have been given both an obligation and an opportunity. Scripture is clear that we are called to give. As Paul said, On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made (1 Corinthians 16:2). Scripture is equally as clear when Paul also says that God loves a cheerful giver! (II Corinthians 9:6-7) It is true that giving is an obligation, but as God works in our hearts, we become transformed so that we view our giving as an opportunity rather than an obligation. As a renewed and transformed people, our attitudes toward giving change from a got to to a get to attitude. We stop giving grudgingly, and we start to give willingly and cheerfully. We want to give because giving is an expression of our love and gratitude to God for who He is and what He does for us. The more we give of ourselves and our gifts, the closer our relationship with Christ becomes; and the more we want to give, the more God blesses us, which then enables our continued giving. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God (2 Corinthians 9:11). I am thankful that God fills us daily with His love and grace so that we, as disciples gathered here at Pilmoor, will realize that giving is indeed a privilege and an opportunity to praise and thank Him! FOOD PANTRY RECAP was indeed a busy year for our Food Pantry. We give thanks to each and every person who has supported the Pantry throughout the years and continues to do so. Our volunteers give selflessly of their time and talents, and we know there are thousands of hours given in service to this mission of our Church. In 2014, Pilmoor MUMC Food Pantry served 1,963 families, totaling 6,501 adults and children. 97,615 meals were given out from our Pantry. Already during the first week of January, we have provided 4,890 meals to 93 families, totaling 362 people. The need is great in our community, and we are blessed as a church to be able to provide for food-insecure families in Currituck. We give thanks and praise to God for providing the means for this mission of Pilmoor Church.

3 V o l u m e 2 3, I s s u e 1 6 P a g e 3 PILMOOR YOUTH ARE ON A MISSION THIS FEBRUARY On February 1st, the youth will sponsor "Souper Bowl Sunday." We will be collecting soup and canned goods for the food pantry. On February 11th, we will be hosting our annual Chili Cookoff, so get those recipes out and join us for some good food and fellowship. As always, there will be prizes for best traditional, best non -traditional, hottest, and best overall. From February 20-22, we will be taking the older youth to Beach Retreat in Nags Head. We will not have youth on the 22nd. Youth group is open for anyone in grades 3rd through 12th. GIRL SCOUT HAPPENINGS IN FEBRUARY Our Troop 365 Girl Scouts will meet this month on the 8th, 22nd, and 28th. The meetings will be held at the church in the social hall. On February 28th, the Troop will participate in World Thinking Day; it is an official award that may be worn on the front of the official Girl Scout uniform sash or vest. The theme for World Thinking Day 2015 is girls worldwide say "we can create peace through partnerships." This theme is based on the United Nations' Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 8: to develop a global partnership for development. This goal is about all countries, rich and poor, working with one another to support the MDGs and the MDGs are themselves a global partnership. In order for poorer countries to reach the other seven goals, more-prosperous countries must provide more effective aid, sustainable debt relief, and fair trade rules. BOY SCOUTS TROOP 182 Pilmoor Methodist hosts Boy Scout Troop 182. The troop meets each Monday at 7:00 pm. If you know a young man who is interested in joining our Boy Scouts troop, please contact our Scouting Ministry Specialist, Roy Haworth, at Planning Ahead: Mission Foci for 2015 A message from the Beacon District The Beacon District Mission Leadership Team is grateful to every church for your faithfulness in local church mission and your participation in District and Conference initiatives. We are particularly hopeful that after two years of District level Stop Hunger Now events you will feel empowered to work with clusters of churches to do these events on your own. Global Health-Spring In addition to your gifts during Advent, there will be three events to support the Imagine No Malaria campaign. Planning has begun for a Skeeter Run in Hertford. Another group has begun planning for a Motorcycle Ride for the same cause. Details and dates for both events will be provided soon. An additional Skeeter Run at Kitty Hawk is under development as well. Project Agape-Summer Churches will be asked once again to support our Armenian brothers and sisters by preparing Christmas boxes for children there. More details will be available soon, but now is a good time to plan ahead by getting gloves and hats. Food Insecurity Fall To celebrate and expand upon the wonderful work our churches are doing through Food Pantries, Gleaning, and Partnerships we are planning a major event called Can-struction. The tentative date for this event is November 14 with partners and location still under development. Stay tuned for the fun details of this opportunity. Our Partnership with Liberia All year long We will continue to actively partner with missionaries who serve in Liberia and throughout year churches will be asked to consider ways to support the District and Conference efforts. The Beacon District has been generous in the past (see below) and is positioned to provide leadership to the newly formed Liberia Task Force which reports to the Conference Mission Team (see below). Over the long term we hope to form partnership between our local agricultural community and the sustainable farming efforts at Ganta Mission Station.

4 P a g e 4 P i l m o o r P i l o t The Knitwits will meet in February from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the church library. We will be working on our prayer shawls which are given to people in need from our congregation and our community. Please bring any prayer shawls you have been working on. Contact Ruth Ambrose for a date. Looking forward to seeing you there! It s Super Bowl Sub time! The Hilda Brumsey Circle are offering their annual subs for our football fans (and moms who just do not feel like cooking) out there for Sunday Night Football! Subs are 6 long and come in either Ham or Turkey for the meat and American or Provolone for the cheese. Dressings include a choice of lettuce, tomato, onion, oil & vinegar, mayonnaise, and mustard. Each handmade sub is only $5, and they are made with love by our very own Pilmoor United Methodist Women! The Hilda Brumsey Circle of the United Methodist Women will meet Feb. 19 at 7pm in the fellowship hall. Nedra Lane will be our hostess and Beverly Johnson will have the program. The Pilmoor United Methodist Men (UMM) meet for a light meal and fellowship the 18th of February at 6:00PM. All men ages 16 and above are encouraged to come dine with us, hear God s word, and see how we can serve our church and community, as Jesus did. No talent or skill is necessary, just a willingness to hear God s word, be a good Samaritan, and follow Jesus. TINY PEEPS FROM PILMOOR PRESCHOOL Our preschoolers will learn the importance of loving our neighbors in the month of February. They will learn about lessons of God s love and His commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. We will also show our love for our neighbors by donating canned goods to the food pantry from what we collect during our Valentine s Day party on the 11th. Our Fall Registration for the school year begins on the 1st! Current students will be given first opportunity to enroll until the 25th. Church members may apply to enroll their little ones starting the 25th until March 1st. After March 1st, enrollment will be open to the general public. We have limited space available in each class, so be sure to let everyone know what a great program we have and encourage them to apply. There are 16 spots available in the four s class, 14 in the three s class, and 8 in the two s class. Our two year olds must be in pull-ups and understand that they are in training for independent potty use. Our three and four year olds must be fully potty trained. Monthly tuition for our classes is: $170/fours, $150/threes, and $120/twos. We collect a $125 registration fee for each student who applies. On February 25, 2015 at 6:00 pm, the Preschool staff will be cooking a Wednesday night dinner of Brunswick Stew with a lovely side of moist, delicious cornbread. Each plate will be $5 for adults and $3 for children. The money made from the dinner will go to support the preschool. Please come out and join us! We still have wonderful soap available for sale in the church office! Bars are ~4 oz. and cost only $3! They are handmade from scratch and smell divine! Proceeds from soap sales benefit our preschool with new curriculum supplies. Thank you!

5 V o l u m e 2 3, I s s u e 1 6 P a g e 5 The Leola Hall Circle meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10 AM. Our next meeting will be held February 11 at the home of April Fisher. We have a big announcement to make for the month of March. On March 25, we will have a Wednesday night dinner with rotisserie chicken, cranberry sauce, macaroni and cheese, green beans and yeast rolls at $5.00 a person, reservations are needed. And after the dinner, our annual cake auction will be held. John Murray will be our auctioneer and church members are asked to donate homemade cakes. The proceeds from the auction will go to Pilmoor s Building Fund. This is a fun night, so come for dinner and stay for the auction. On April 8, we will travel to Chesapeake, VA to visit with our dear friend, Aileen Culpepper, and will enjoy lunch out after our visit. If anyone would like to join us for this visit, you are certainly welcome. One of our members, Carolyn Davis, is now home healing from complicated back surgery and we took her a love bag full of goodies and salads after our January meeting. We are planning an outreach program for all our shut-ins, currently they are receiving monthly cards but we feel there is more that we can do. We had election of officers: President, Judy Cohoon; Vice-President, Ginny Fulcher; Secretary, Wilma Adkins; Treasurer, April Fisher, and Bobbie Badeaux.
