1 OCTOBER 2018 Monday, October 29 Charge Conference at Emory Church 7:00pm CONGRADULATIONS to Pat Dula on her retirement. Coale Hawkins of Rock Run United Methodist Church Sends an Invitation to: Spirit Reset Inside this issue: Vacation Bible School Mission/Summer Camp Picture 2 Monday October 22, 2018 at Rock Run. A dinner and a service. The dinner will be from 6:00-7:00 pm. And the service from 7:00-8:00. The meal is to be provided, unless someone has a dish or desert they would like to share. The service will be enjoying the special music singers and conclude with a message from Gods word. It is my hope and prayer that folks from other churches will attend, and be involved in these services, and possibly be interested in hosting future services. Please invite anyone and everyone you can think of that could use a good physical and spiritual feeding. May the Lords face shine upon us as we seek to glorify Him in these services, Thank you, Coale Anyone interested in attending an evening Bible Study, please contact Pastor Lynne. 3 Page 3 Our service focus for October is for Grace Place Preparing & Serving Desserts Donating non-perishable food for the pantry Donating size 5 Diapers and unscented wipes For the month of September, Wesleyan Chapel served our 87 guests a homemade chicken tetrazzini with bread and butter. Havre de Grace provided everyone with a Klondike bar. Hopewell's six very busy volunteers worked the dining room and grocery table. We will be doing God s work by serving and helping others on Tuesday, October 10th. Hopewell will be preparing and serving homemade Apple Dump Cakes. Anyone is always welcome to participate and reach out to the community. Over the past months, our number of guests and toddlers attending Grace Place has in creased. As a result, our shelves are getting bare, our monetary funds and canned goods have started to diminish. During the month of October Hopewell is focusing on collecting can goods, size 5 diapers and unscented wipes. A collection box is located by the front doors. 7 Page 7 Pastor s Page Hello, Susquehanna Charge! Grace and peace to this house! Rejoice, for the kingdom of God is near to you! This month we have a new fourweek worship series focusing on Grace. We are taking a deep dive in the mysterious and complicated story of Job, which is neatly condensed into four lectionary readings in the month of October. We are challenged to go beyond the surface of Job and allow ourselves to wrestle with a mysterious piece of Scripture. Grace is the mystery of God s love evident in us, through us, and all around us. God is present in the good and the bad. Grace undergirds us during times of difficulty and disorientation, so that we, like Job, can remain faithful to God. The grace of God is the only way theologically we can explain the unexplainable, or biblically understand the mystery of God s Spirit in this text. We are on a journey as people of faith, moving toward the goal of Christian perfection. Sanctifying grace helps us to love God and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves in light of the challenges we may face in life. Diving into the book of Job is an opportunity that comes around only one month every three years in the Revised Common Lectionary, so I wanted to take advantage of this thread of readings this year. Job is a difficult book to read and interpret, even for the most advanced Biblical scholars, but focusing on the book of Job can be an opportunity to embrace vivid imagery, human emotion, and the mysterious nature of a God who created the entire universe all together in worship. The themes for each week mirror some of the emotions we experience in discernment: feelings of disorientation, being deserted, being silenced, and through all of that, being restored to right relationship with God. By God s grace and the Holy Spirit, we are given the strength to overcome life s most difficult moments. If we are seeking God, we will discover internal strength that bears witness to God s love in the world, even in the midst of external hardships. I look forward to the worship we do together. It is part of the deepest things we know in the deepest part of our lives. Thank you for coming along with me as we all seek to be better disciples for Jesus Christ. Together, we can transform the world into God s kingdom. Blessings to you, Pastor Lynne
8 Page 8 Our 1 st meeting after the summer break was Monday, August 27 th. Linda Sims prepared a delicious summer meal of homemade chicken salad served with a fresh garden salad, corn on the cob, and a fruit salad. We had 22 ladies in attendance which included some new faces Noy and Becky Brackin, and Rev Lynne. After a very productive business meeting, Linda Sapp presented the program What Does the Bible Say About Forgiveness. We ended our meeting with refreshments and awesome fellowship. The Baltimore Suburban District Fall Meeting was held on Saturday, September 22, 2018, hosted by Bel Air UMW. This year the District s mission was to provide assistance to The Samaritan Women. At our first meeting Hopewell s UMW voted to purchase $275 worth of household products for the women. Pat Mahan, Linda Sims and myself attended the meeting and delivered the cleaning items. Mt Zion Church s Women s Conference is Saturday, October 18 th. Tracy Tierman of 95.1 SHINE-FM and Nikki Lerner of Bridgeway Community Church will speak on What Matters Most. Information is posted on the white boards in the Narthex and downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please pray for the victims of this unnecessary behavior. I would like to invite all the women of the church and their friends to join us the 1 st Monday of every month. Become a part of a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Our meeting dates will resume on the first Monday of each month. Our next meeting is Monday, October 1 at 7:00pm. As the days are getting shorter causing more night driving, we would really like to form some carpools. Please contact me ( ) if you would like to have a ride or can pick someone up to come to the meeting. Linda Shifflett President
