NEXT SUNDAY: Simple On Sunday, June 9 we begin a new series, What You See is What You Get. Jesus seemed to make it pretty simple when it comes to what following Him would be all about: love God and love others as you love yourself. But this simple command gets a lot more complicated when we don't see God, ourselves and others as we should. On June 9 we also start meeting earlier. Students meet for dinner for $4 at 5:30 p.m. (instead of 6:30) in the Mariposa Café. Youth time follows in the newly renovated Youth Room in the Christian Life Enrichment Center. We will be finished at 8:00 instead of 9:00. Teen Valley Ranch Retreat The deadline is coming! All students attending TVR July 7-13 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina need to have the parental consent forms filled out by Sunday, June 9. Help the Wounded In 2003, David Rozelle, (pictured right), then a captain in the army, lost part of his leg in a landmine while p a t r o l l i n g i n Fallujah, Iraq. D u r i n g h i s recovery, Captain Rozelle decided he needed to be Major David Rozelle, Courtesy University of Colorado equipped to reach out to fellow soldiers going through the struggles of war, so he trained to be a Stephen Minister in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His mission was to minister to other soldiers and wounded warriors because at that time there was no established support system to take care of wounded soldiers like Captain Rozelle. Rozelle said, there are never enough chaplains to cover the needs of our soldiers. He returned to active duty as a stronger and more mature leader and as the first soldier in history to return to active duty as an amputee. He is now a Lieutenant Colonel and still serving in Stephen Ministry. We have wounded people all around us. People who are suffering from physical disabilities, emotional trauma, life struggles and there are never enough pastors to cover the needs of our folks who need attention and love. Stephen Ministry allows us to serve others while serving God. We don t have to be strong, we don t have to be perfect, we don t even have to be whole all it takes is the ability to care, to share your faith and to listen. Won t you consider and pray about Stephen Ministry as your place of service? It is not a ministry for personal glory but is filled with God s blessings. Contact the church office if you are interested.

9 Good News Record Attendance at Handicapable Worship Featuring Special Guests On Wednesday,May 22, Handicapable had a record attendance of 215. On top of that, we were truly blessed by the Children s Ministry, under the direction of Sherri Plate, who did a wonderful lesson for our group (photo right). Not only did we receive a powerful spiritual message about M&Ms, but each attendee was given a bag of M&Ms as well. Congratulations Children s Ministry participated during Handicapable Worship! Congratulations to proud grandparents, Jim and Mimi Steele. Kristen and David Steele welcomed Jacob on May 12, Mom and baby are doing well and grandparents are thrilled to have their first grandson. Way to go Ethan Grantges! Ethan recently stepped in and taught Sunday school when his parents, the scheduled facilitators, were not able to make it. It s been awesome to see Ethan lead by teaching, playing in the praise band and being confident enough to lead other students in prayer. Praise God for his leadership! Handicapable Ministry Shines at the Special Olympics State Games State games for the Special Olympics were held on May 17 and 18 at Disney World in Orlando. Six members of the Handicapable Ministry participated and came home with numerous medals. We are so proud of our star athletes and our coaches who make these forever memories possible. Homeless Feedings Every Sunday afternoon a team of devoted volunteers led by Shaun Powers and Michele Wolfe help to feed the homeless in downtown Clearwater, From food preparation by Carolyn Goodwin to set up and serving, it takes a small crew to do this week in and week out. We are thankful for our volunteers and for those who serve every week to provide a hot meal and lunch to those families who are in need. 10 Note from Pastor Bob While change may be difficult while you are in its midst, it also opens the doors for so much opportunity. In this third installment of our frequently asked questions we are taking a look at the awesome opportunities we have before us to participate in ministry and bring more people into God s kingdom. Is it possible for all of the needs of the church to be met by one Pastor? This is a great question! Caring for the needs of the church family and those outside of the church has been accomplished well in the past and we do not see any deviation from this in the future. It does create new opportunities for the church family. Pastor Bob believes in Paul s words written in Ephesians 4:11-12, whereby the role of the ordained clergy is to empower the saints (the church laity) to do ministry. When Jesus came to the world to disclose the Father s plan He modeled what ministry is to look like. Notice the Scripture does not teach that Jesus did the entire ministry Himself; He taught disciples how to do it. In the Feeding of the 5,000 the story demonstrates this model of ministry. The disciples ask Jesus, Where will we find the food to feed all of these people? What was Jesus response? He said to the disciples, You feed them. Doing God s ministry is not reserved for the pleasure of the ordained clergy. It is God s gift given to all of His people and as Christians we are taught to do His ministry. Oftentimes it is heard, I am leaving my church because I m not being fed. In more times than not, this is usually meant to say the pastor is not feeding the sheep. In John 4:34, we learn the opposite. Jesus says clearly, My food is found in doing the will of the Father. Simply put, when a Christian feels they are not being fed the Lord says they must look at themselves and ask, Am I doing the Father s will? When we all serve God and operate in His will for the Kingdom s purpose we will never hunger. The more involved we are in serving the Lord and others through His church the closer we come to His presence and the fuller we become We have always had many pastors. How will we operate as a church with only one? By looking at how we do ministry this becomes possible. Whereas in the past it may have been a priority for the ordained pastors to do the ministry of the church, our focus for the future is to move in another direction. Paul writes in Ephesians 4 the role of the ordained is to, Empower the saints (the laity) to do ministry. By moving into this Biblically based direction we embrace what the writer of Hebrews calls, The priesthood of all believers. With the excitement of all worshipers serving the Lord using their gifts, graces and resources this way of doing ministry is totally possible. Why aren t we going to have an Associate Pastor? With the staff realignment and the addition of our Senior Leadership team the Staff Parish Relations Team communicated to the Bishop that the appointment of an Associate Pastor was not needed at this time. This does not mean we will not ever have an appointed Associate Pastor but that each year we will evaluate how we are functioning, and make a recommendation if an appointed Associate is needed at that time. The good news is this opens up so many new opportunities for the family of St. Paul to become involved in ministry. Clergy alone cannot take care of a church and it is not Biblical for the ordained or church staff to shoulder the burden and pleasure of doing ministry. Scripture says it is a privilege shared by all of God s people to serve. How will our church visitation needs be accomplished with only one pastor? We are extremely blessed to have many qualified and caring people who are providing visitation support for our church family. Visitation and hospital coverage has been handled very well in the past. We do not see any change in visitation as this is currently being accomplished by our Stephen Ministers, Source Groups, Lay Ministers, Church staff, parishioners, ministry teams and our pastor. The Pastor will likely become more involved in times of significant need such as: crisis visitation, death, emergency hospitalization or other times that are extreme. With the advent of Source Groups and the growing awareness of care needs, more people are finding comfort in their time of need. Will I still be able to meet with the pastor? There is likely no change in the way meetings with the pastor are currently scheduled. We highly recommend that if you wish to see the pastor, you contact the church office so that an appointment may be confirmed. This ensures you will have appropriate time and attention to your request. In cases of an emergency, we ask that you keep your calendar open so that the first available time may be scheduled
