Main St. Marshalltown, IA pastor@fccmarshalltown.org secretar@fccmarshalltown.org treasurer@fccmarshalltown.org sound@fccmarshalltown.org Ephesians 1: Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. May 10 is the date of the Ascension of the Lord. After His resurrection He stayed with the disciples until this time, over a month. According to the Apostle Paul, He once appeared to over 500 people at the same time (1 Corinthians 15:6) and there were witnesses when He ascended into heaven. After that, angels told the gathered crowd that Jesus would return to the same spot on the Mount of Olives. In the meantime, they were to gather in Jerusalem and await the arrival of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost). The Lord seems to delight in training us to wait; to wait upon Him in prayer, to wait for answers to prayer, to just manage to be faithful in the midst of everyday life. In this passage about Christ ascending to heaven the Bible tells us to wait, but wait with vision. Not vision for our lives, or our church or ministry. All of that is valuable and necessary, but here we are encouraged to have a vision of Christ. Verse 18 speaks of the "eyes of our understanding being enlightened" to grasp what is the hope before us as Christians and the power that is at work in all who call on the name of Christ, even the same power that raised Christ from the dead. I think insights regarding what the Holy Spirit is doing in our community now will arise out of a growing understanding of the wonder of Christ and the eternal destiny that is before the Christian. That should be our prayer this month for each other, that "the eyes of our understanding being enlightened, that you may saints." That's my prayer for you this month. Have a wonderful May. 5 Vitality Ministry Council The Vitality Ministry Council's purpose is to enrich the National Association through education and encouraging churches and pastors. Our task teams include: The Congregational Foundation for Theological Studies (CFTS). This task team helps support seminarians spiritually and financially, finding mentors to encourage students and scholarships to make seminary possible. For ministers coming into the NA, students in CFTS and other interested folks, CFTS organizes educational events like the Boston Seminar. The Lay Ministry Training Program is also under their oversight. Workshops for the Annual Meeting and Conference. Among all the seminars offered, this team ensures we have something related to churches or ministers in community. Church Revitalization. This task team encourages churches and pastors to think differently about the challenges they face by sponsoring workshops and strategic visioning. Pastoral Search. The NA facilitates the search process for churches and pastors by making available online resources, including church and minister information forms. During the Annual Meeting, Vitality Ministry Council members are available to help churches and/or pastors to strategize about their process. Minister Convocations. Each year, the NA sponsors a retreat for ministers to enjoy fellowship, spiritual rest and reflection. This year, we will have two convocations: Mid-west (in Michigan) and New England (in Massachusetts). We hope to add other regional convocations in the future! Awards and Pastor Appreciation. The National Association has a number of awards to encourage lay people and ministers alike. This team oversees that awards process. Congregational Identity. What makes us Congregational, and how do we help our churches, pastors, lay people and the world understand Congregationalism better? These big questions guide this task team. Music Ministry. Someone thought, "Wouldn't it be great if we could help church musicians in the NA be in touch and support one another?" We have a terrific bunch working on all these projects. They include: Irv Gammon (CT), Sarah Gladstone (MI), Doug Gray (MA), Emily Miller-Todd (CA), Justin Nierer (MI), and our ministry intern, Meghan Webster (MI). Dr. Charles Packer (Dean of CFTS), Dr. Michael Chittum (Executive Director) are part of our team meetings too. If you are interested in one of these great task teams and would like to step up and help, please let us know. If you have a great idea that falls into this area, let us know how we can support you and your church. Please Doug Gray for more information.
