Volume 65, Issue 7 July 20, 2018 Worship with all of Bothell UMC in the Community on Sunday, August 26! We will serve our schools to ready them for the new year, alongside other faith communities and partners! From 9 am to 1 pm we will all be at a school in our community doing a variety of things to help teachers and staff hit the ground running on the first day of school. Sign up on communityserveday.org ASAP to reserve your spot with your family and friends! Then put your name on the board in the narthex so we know who is serving where! And please note, this isn t just about landscaping and painting. There are tasks that can be done sitting down or moving about a classroom. All ages and abilities are welcome! There are paper signup sheets on the bulletin board if you prefer. Turn them in to the office so that we can register online for you. Any questions, contact Kristin@bothellumc.org 1 The BUMC team at Westhill Elementary in 2017
Friends, Throughout the year, I often find myself looking forward to the summer. Summer is the time for relaxation, for spontaneous trips, for barbeques and swimming and camps. Even though my life no longer follows the academic year, I am still excited for what the summer has to offer. As we are about halfway through this summer, I look back and think of all the fun we have had as a community. We ve experienced life, laughter and learning through Vacation Bible School and our Wonderful Wednesdays Youth Program. We have been experiencing joy through The Book of Joy study on Thursdays. We have experienced food and fellowship through our summer breakfasts. And there is so much more to come! I wonder, though, if in the midst of spontaneity and excitement, we lose sight of being intentional. I wonder what it might look like to spend time intentionally with God, growing in hospitality, in worship, in generosity, in mission and service, in faith development, and in community? I hope and pray that this summer is one of joy for you. But I also hope and pray that your faith continues to grow. Join us in prayer at 7:44 every morning and night or read the Bible with me cover to cover in a year. Come see my fridge! Whatever you do, do it with God and have a blessed rest of summer! Blessings, Pastor Joe 2
Do You Hear What I Hear? There are so many things happening at Bothell UMC! Here are ways you can learn about our ministries, events, classes and more! Read inside your bulletin every Sunday! Activities include experiencing Compline at St. Mark's Cathedral, visits to the Wing Luke Museum and the Duwamish Longhouse & Cultural Center, a night at The Mariners, as well as visits to downtown Seattle, and work with Camp Unity Tent City. All youth, 7th-12th grade are encouraged to attend. To sign up or get more information, contact Pastor Joe at pastorjoe@bothellumc.org. Wonderful Wednesdays The Youth Group shifts its focus to play and fellowship in the summer, and we also shift to Wednesdays. Youth Summer Sundays Have you ever had a question about the Bible? Faith? How it pertains to today? Afraid to ask? Join us on Sunday mornings this summer for a random course of difficult questions. We'll tally up some topics and questions and then dive in with help from history books, the Bible, and even some social media. 7
Did You Know Community Serve Day is Sunday, August 26. It s the day that all church members are encouraged to worship through service by helping the entire community prepare our public schools for the return of students in September. We ll have a brief time of prayer in the Ann Blackburn Outdoor Chapel at 8 am (donuts and coffee to follow!) before people will disperse to go to work at the school they signed up to help. Please note, our regular morning worship services will not be held that morning so that we can be Christ in our community through service. Save the date for our Fall Kick Off at the church on Sunday, September 9! Sunday School starts up again that day, and the Chancel Choir will sing once again at the Roots service. At the conclusion of the Wings service, we ll all come together for a pot luck. Unlike previous years, this party will be held on our FRONT lawn so Bring a lawn chair and a salad or dessert to share. The church will provide the entrée (a taco bar!) More details will follow in the coming weeks. John Wesley recognized that people grow in their faith by being in relationship with others, so he encouraged participation in small groups. The same holds true for today. Be on the lookout for information about all the new Small Groups that will start in the fall, and think about which one (or which ones) you would like to join. Faith and Fiction We are taking an extended summer break. When we meet again in the fall, we ll discuss That Hideous Strength by C. S. Lewis. All are invited to join us for our monthly book discussion. We meet at the Greens' home, only a few short blocks from the church, usually the third Wednesday of the month, at 7 pm. Please join us for our next meeting on September 19. 8
Library News Have you been curious about how the church has managed to get to where it is today? Check out A People s History of Christianity by Diana Butler Bass. For too long, the history of Christianity has been told as the triumph of orthodox doctrine imposed through power and hierarchy. In A People s History of Christianity, historian and religion expert Diana Butler Bass reveals an alternate history that includes a deep social ethic and far-reaching inclusivity. The other side of the story is not a modern phenomenon, but has always been practiced within the church. Butler Bass persuasively argues that corrective even subversive beliefs and practices have always been hallmarks of Christianity and are necessary to nourish communities of faith. Does your summer vacation include hiking in the Cascade or Olympic ranges? If so, check out a small book in the library entitled, Walking in the Beauty of the World: Reflections of a Northwest Botanist. Published by The Washington Native Plant Society, the book is a collection of botanical essays by former church member Joe Arnett. With chapters that combine botany with local history and personal experience, you re bound to learn something new in these essays. Joe has been a professional botanist and teacher in the Northwest for over twenty years, and the essays describe wild - and not so wild - places, personal knowledge of the plants, and wider topics of a human relationship with nature. His writing invites you to step off the path of routine and catch a glimpse of the natural world in which we live. 9
Becoming Christ in the Community Box Tops For Education Box Tops for Education are collected in the church office. If you can take the time to clip them off your cereal and other boxes and packages, our United Methodist Women collect them and donate them to assist McCurdy Ministries Community Center in Española, NM. Update on Hopelink Donation Box Effective September 1, we will no longer have a donation box for Hopelink non-perishable or household goods. Food donations are accepted at Bothell UMC for food for the Bothell High Brown Bags (non-perishable, single serve items). These donations also serve as our own food pantry in the event that a local person needs food immediately. Household goods can be donated to New Ground Bothell. These are brand new items that go to young women who are first -timers in a housed situation and the list of accepted items is in their box in the lobby. 10 Doll Collection It s time already to collect dolls that have been dressed and ready to donate to the Atlantic Street Center. Ladies from the Doll Team will be available on Sunday, August 12, at a special table in Fellowship Hall to accept the dolls. We are also happy to accept any other donations such as doll clothes, booties, bibs, blankets and bottles. On the same day, new dolls will be offered to dress and will be collected at a later date in October. Patterns, yarn and fabric will also be available. A big thank you to all those who help to dress and "outfit" these dolls. They are so very appreciated by the families. Next Witness Deadline Monday, August 13
Jamaa Letu Visit 2018 Rev. Kristin Joyner will lead a team of six from our area, Yakima and Rochester to visit the students at Jamaa Letu in the DRC from July 31 through August 14. Building the relationship between our Conferences, getting to know the kids better, hearing the stories about the University Students who have left the orphanages and working with the computer labs will be the main activities during this timeframe. Please keep this team in your thoughts and prayers. Thank You VBS! With a goal of $500, VBS raised $ for the Senegal Sisters Playground Project and Jamaa Letu! Our Mission: Senegal Sisters are the Youth Ambassador project of Mission EDU Senegal. We aim to connect with girls in Dakar to be able to learn more, do projects, share stories, and be there for each other. To connect the children of Bothell UMC with the children of Imam 1 Elementary in Dakar Senegal so we can Become Christ in the Community. 11
Extremely THANKFUL for an AMPED VBS! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who supported our Vacation Bible School with your presence, donations, and prayers! We were blessed to have 80 kids attend and it was an energetic and joyful time! We explored the amazing truths that God is always with us, God has a plan for us, Jesus is ALIVE, we should live like people matter and that we are part of a bigger story! All reasons to be AMPED and live our lives fully alive, just like, Jesus!! We hope the amazing ways that God has been at work in, around and through us will carry over into homes and the community so there will be an impact that extends long beyond our week long VBS! We are so very grateful for all the ways you have lifted us up and made this such an incredible week! 12
