3 Is It A Sin To Miss Mass? Canon Law which is the law of the church, tells us that on Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass; they are also to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord's Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body. Since a "grave cause" is needed to excuse one from this obligation it would be a serious sin to willfully skip Mass on Sunday or a Holy Day of Obligation, as the Church has always taught. Reasons such as the necessity to work to support one's family, child care, personal sickness or the care of the sick, necessary travel etc. would excuse a person on a particular occasion. Those who have continuing reason to be excused should consult their pastor. If we miss Sunday Mass, without a serious excuse, we cannot receive Communion without first confessing it in the Sacrament of Confession. Attending Mass each Sunday and every holy day of obligation is a minimal obligation in maintaining one's relationship with God through Christ and His Church, therefore, missing Mass without a serious reasonable excuse, would be the matter of mortal sin. What s important to understand is that for a sin to be mortal, and therefore exclude us from receiving Holy Communion, we must be fully guilty of the action. God knows the full picture and will judge accordingly. Be honest with yourself and with God and admit your guilt when it is there. Do not be afraid to refrain from Communion if you are aware of serious sin and have not chosen to confess it yet. Refraining, in this case, is far better for your soul than going to Communion. 5 Page 5 "We do not need to know the beginning of a child's story to change the ending" -Fi Newood We all must unite not only in prayer but also in action to aid the immigrants especially the children who have been separated from their parents and families. This isn't a political issue and the response must be made with compassion and care for those suffering from separation of their loved ones. We can make a positive impact and change the ending to the children's story from despair to a life of hope. San Antonio Diocese Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers, monetary and clothing donations to aid our brothers and sisters. We will be sending out notices via and our web page on how you can help. We Honor and Salute You! Saturday, July 7 following the 5 p.m. Mass we will gather in front of our flag to honor our Veterans and Active service men and women. If you are a Veteran or in Active Service member please plan to attend. (Feel free to wear your uniform!) A reception will follow. I praise you, for I am wonderfully made. Archbishop Appeal 2018 Our goal is $12, we have collected $10, Catholic Charities - Guadalupe Home Anna grew up in the Ukraine. She was one of five children growing up in a single parent household. Her mother taught the children to pick the pockets of the men to whom she would sell herself. She was eventually arrested for murder charges. Anna, who was 4, never saw her mother again. She was sent with her siblings to their grandmother s house but ended up in a Ukrainian orphanage because the grandmother couldn t afford to care for them. During their stay, Anna lost three of her siblings to illness. She remained in the orphanage until she turned 14, when she met her adoptive family, who promised that she would be taken care of and treated well in the US. Unfortunately, once the adoption process was completed, the family treated her as though she did not belong. She was sent to a boarding high school where she met her boyfriend. Soon after, Anna became pregnant. Her adoptive family shamed her, convincing her to give her child up for adoption. Isolating her in a hotel, away from their home and her friends, she was scared, but she was able to survive being scared, because she had survived her entire life. Completely alone, she had a life growing in her belly and no way of knowing how to take care of him, because she had never been taught. She reached out for help but found only roadblocks and judgement. Until the day Anna received a call from the Director of the Guadalupe Home offering her shelter and supportive services. Anna was dropped off at Guadalupe Home with her belongings and nowhere to go. The Director explained there would be rules and a curfew, but she would never be put out on the street again. Then, Anna was given her own room full of everything that she would need, including furnishings and linens for her baby. She was met by a caring staff and residents, who had faced many of the same obstacles. Anna stayed almost 18 months and left Guadalupe Home a strong and happy young woman, who worked diligently to be the mother that she never thought she d become. Today, she lives in Austin, TX. Working as a fulltime housekeeper, she s saved enough for her own apartment and car, and looks forward to coming home to take care of her beautiful baby boy. Thanks to the caring donors of the Archbishop s Appeal, lives are changing in an incredible way at the Guadalupe Home. Women like Anna have been able to find safe shelter and get back on their feet to provide for themselves and their babies. They learn and experience what family feels like and how to parent during their stay at the Guadalupe Home.
