6 6 October 2012 Vatica II Vatica II: Patiece...fifty years is othig By GUIDO HORST ROME I a iterview with Vatica Isider, Church historia ad scholar of the Secod Vatica Coucil, Walter Cardial Bradmüller, says that Catholics should ot be surprised by the cotiuig cofusio over the teachigs of Vatica II, eve 50 years after the Coucil. Church history shows that it is commo for decades to pass before the faithful fully adjust to the teachigs of a Coucil, the cardial observes. He otes that Christological disputes cotiued to rage for a cetury after the Coucil of Nicea. Frakly, eve the Coucil of Tret was ot very fruitful util the Golde Jubilee of 1596, the Germa cardial adds. The Secod Vatica Coucil was a pastoral coucil that also provided dogmatic explaatios. Had there ever bee aythig like it previously i the history of the Church? Vatica II marked the begiig of a ew type of Coucil. The laguage that was used durig it ad the completeess of the texts show that the Coucil fathers were ot as much motivated by the eed to pass judgemet o cotroversial ew ecclesiastical ad theological issues, but rather by the wish to tur their attetio to public opiio withi the Church ad the etire world, i the spirit of the Auciatio. Should t a Coucil be declared a failure if fifty years o it has ot bee warmly received by the faithful? This is oe of those cliché questios that stem from a ew existetial setimet; that feelig of cofusio that is typical of our times. But what is fifty years after all?! Cast your mid back to the Coucil of Nicaea i 325. The disputes surroudig the dogma of this Coucil about the ature of the So, that is, whether he was made of the same substace as the Father or ot cotiued for more tha a hudred years. St. Ambrose was ordaied Bishop of Mila o the occasio of the fiftieth aiversary of the Coucil of Nicaea ad had to fight hard agaist the Arias who refused CELEBRATING THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL The Secod Vatica Coucil i 1962 led to the foudig of Sacred Heart Uiversity by Bishop Walter W. Curtis as the first Catholic uiversity i America led ad staffed by lay people. Sacred Heart will celebrate the 50th aiversary of Vatica II ad its close affiliatio with that historical occasio with a series of evets. to accept the Nicee provisios. Shortly afterwards came a ew Coucil: the First Coucil of Costatiople of 381 which was deemed ecessary i order to complete the professio of the faith at Nicaea. Durig this Coucil, St. Augustie was give the task of dealig with requests ad fightig back heretics util his death i 430. Frakly, eve the Coucil of Tret was ot very fruitful util the Golde Jubilee of It took a ew geeratio of bishops ad prelates to mature i the spirit of the Coucil before its effect could really be felt. We eed to allow ourselves a little more breathig space. Let us talk ow about the fruits which Vatica II produced. First of all, the Catechism of the Catholic Church i compariso with the Tridetie Catechism: after the Coucil of Tret, the Catechismus Romaus was lauched i order to provide parish priests, preachers etcetera with guidelies o how to preach ad aouce the Gospel or evagelize. Eve the 1983 Code of Cao Law ca be cosidered a cosequece of the Coucil. I must emphasize that the form of the post-cociliar liturgy, with all its distortios, is ot attributable to the Coucil or to the Liturgy Costitutio established durig Vatica II, which, by the way, has ot really bee implemeted eve to this day. The idiscrimiate removal of Lati ad Gregoria Chats from liturgical celebratios were ot acts prescribed by the Coucil. However, the liturgy has come to be see as a mirror image of Church life, subject to a orgaic historical evolutio. 11 October Vocatio Semiarias from page 2 was formed very early i his life whe he discovered a love for the Mass. His ucle, a Augustiia priest, also created iterest by providig a role model. I remember keelig durig the Cosecratio, lookig at the priest ad thikig, That s what I really wat to do. There was o real explaatio for it, says Tim. Though he first thought of becomig a priest at the age of 12, he put it i the back of his mid ad did t cosider it seriously agai util he graduated from Merrimac College this May. He has played teor ad alto sax i college bads ad jazz esembles ad would be workig as a musicia if he did ot pursue the priesthood. Like others iterviewed for this article, 26 year-old Shae Nues of Fairfield heard the call early i his life, but at some poit tured his back o it. I walked away from my faith for years begiig i college. I really stopped goig to church, says Shae, who was bor ad raised i Shelto. But three years ago, his faith came back stroger tha ever, ad he kew he had to come to terms with his callig. After graduatig from Virgiia Military Istitute (VMI) i 2008, he foud a job at Ethoe, a specialty Tim Iaacoe Adrew Koleberg Shae Nues Brya Samaiego chemical ad techology compay i Orage. He was well paid ad about to be promoted last moth whe he told his employers that he was leavig to become a priest. They were shocked but very supportive ad happy for me, he says. I was really good at what I was doig, but it came dow to a career i research or a vocatio ad this is what I wat. Shae says that he had a ew car, ad a girl fried who loved him, but still felt a God-sized hole i his life that was t beig filled. I could t figure out the emptiess util I started goig back to church. I realized that the idea of priesthood has always bee there. As I got older, it became stroger, eve though I tried to igore it. Brya Samaiego, 17, of Bridgeport, says that his vocatio was formed by the example of Msgr. Aiceto Villamide, pastor of St. Peter Parish i Bridgeport. The 2012 graduate of Cetral High Maget School has always bee draw to the beauty of the Mass. I thik a iterest i Mass ad the Eucharist are a strog foudatio for ayoe s faith. My idea of becomig a priest was with me i my freshma year. I was just so used to attedig Mass. It makes me feel calm, peaceful ad very happy, says Bria, who graduated from the Regioal Aquaculture School i Bridgeport ad has a strog iterest i sciece. Though the self-described baby of the group, Brya is mature i faith. Though he s draw toward the priesthood, he realizes it s importat to test his vocatio ad to remai opemided at his age. I m goig ito the semiary a little bit ervous ad scared, but I kow I m goig to be aroud a good buch of priests ad semiarias there, ad the program is really well structured, he says. I ve always worked hard ad ever give up o aythig I wated. If I do t come out a priest, I kow I ll be a more rouded Christia. Gettig to the poit where they re ready to tell others that they are goig to pursue the priesthood is a importat step i the lives of the youg me who come to the Fisher residece. Adrew Koleberg says his buddies at UCo were take back whe he first told them they thought he would be locked away ad would ever see them agai. It was defiitely a Whoa momet, but the some of my Catholic frieds came aroud ad said I would be good for the job. My other frieds were pretty cool. They said they ever heard of ayoe doig it before, but they wated to kow more about the job details ad the life, says Adrew, who loves to travel ad has visited Russia ad Icelad i his recet advetures ad is plaig to go to Egypt i December. As the semiarias begi studies at St. Joh Fisher Residece, Sacred Heart Uiversity ad St. Joh s Uiversity i Quees, NY, they re lookig forward to deepeig their prayer life. They kow that, as priests, they ll stad out i a secular culture, but they re eager to proclaim the message of the Gospel. I thik priests of the future are really goig to have to deal with people where they are ad to evagelize, says Shae Nues. People are comig i with more struggles. Our job is to show them the Lord as someoe who loves them o matter how much society tells them they re ot lovable. Tim Iaacoe says he fids joy i aswerig the call of a lifetime. God calls me to the priesthood every day. The call is ofte silet ad mysterious. We are each called i differet ways to do somethig for God i our lives. For me, the aswer to that call is, Yes. 13 October Retreat A Oasis for Your Soul By PAM RITTMAN I d always wodered what a retreat would be like. The brochures ad iformatio I read i magazies or at church listed iterestig topics at ear ad distat retreat houses, some alog the ocea or estled i beautiful moutais. I thought if I atteded oe, it would be a way to get away from the daily demads ad challeges of life, deepe my faith ad love for God. My first retreat was give to me as a gift. I was blessed to have someoe who cared about my faith as much as he cared for me. I the cayos of New York City, my retreat house was a hideaway from the glamour, oise ad struggles of a city that ever sleeps. Secure i the warm hospitality of the us, I kew I was i store for a woderful weeked, surrouded by those who shared a similar love of God. Over the weeked, we listeed to presetatios, had group discussios ad took time for private reflectio. The teachigs touched my heart ad mid ad the Scriptures came alive. At meals, we shared with each other what ispired us i a special way. I cherished the quiet time as I reflected o Scripture ad took time for Adoratio ad prayer i the chapel, ad I left a reewed idividual grouded i Christ s love. I foud the experiece so peaceful ad restful that I have scheduled a retreat every year sice. I ve atteded group ad directed retreats throughout the years; there are also idividual, semi-silet ad silet oes. Whatever the choice, my retreats are a period of time set aside for prayer, meditatio ad study that ehaces my persoal faith walk. They put life i perspective. Through them I have made lifelog frieds who share my Catholic faith. Last Jauary I had the privilege of attedig a wome s retreat at Holy Family Passioist Retreat Ceter i West Hartford. The Passioists, a religious order fouded by Sait Paul of the Cross, focus o preachig missios ad retreats. This retreat was held i Jauary, after the holy seaso of Christmas, ad I thought it would be a woderful way to start the New Year after celebratig the birth of our Lord. Workshops led us to experiece Christ s presece i ordiary places, itroduced us to the practice of ceterig prayer, ad acquaited us with the role of saits i Catholic life. Wome of all ages atteded the group; some gave the retreat as a gift to a fried or family member. I meditated while walkig the labyrith o a surprisigly mild Jauary afteroo; other wome took time to follow the outdoor Statios of the Cross. Heart-liftig music i the chapel icreased the depth of the experiece. Whe the stress of everyday livig ad resposibilities has left you tired or eve questioig the poit of your faith the weeked or eve oe-day retreats are a chace to recharge. 14 14 Local News EDITORIAL For Me Without life ad breath, we have o other rights. That s why life, as oted i the Declaratio of Idepedece, comes before liberty ad the pursuit of happiess. Buildig a culture of life, though, is ot about savig ubor childre ad carig for their mothers. It s ot about brigig hope to those i priso or helpig immigrats or visitig the sick, or about parish urses or preschools. All the care ad cocer that is poured ito these thigs cotribute to the culture of life. Noe of them, ot eve the struggle to ed the carage of abortio, are at its foudatio. Noe of them will ultimately be successful uless we recogize the heart of all these works: You did it for me (Matthew 25: 40). We must see Jesus i the face of a frighteed teeager cotemplatig abortio, i a ma who has yet agai failed to coquer the addictio that led him to jail, i adult childre dealig with their mother s paiful last moths. We may ot approve or agree with their choices. We must love them, every bit as much as God loves us. Jesus, his love ad his sacrifice, is the corerstoe supportig every actio, every program that helps build a world overflowig with love ad life. For the Blue Mass o September 11, Msgr. William Scheyd, pastor of St. Aloysius Parish, spoke to fire, police, ad EMS persoel. His homily, delivered i that cotext, produced oe of the best descriptios of what it meas to build a culture of life: People of faith parter with God i carig for the world. The Catholic Vote Now we re i the home stretch of a electio that seems to have captured all the cotetio ad cofusio of a icreasigly divided coutry. Ad if we ca believe what we read, Catholics themselves are divided, about to split their votes equally betwee Democratic ad Republica cadidates. Yet beyod all of the hot-butto issues, this is o ordiary year. We ca ow add ew ad growig cocers over Religious Liberty to the list that divides us. Archbishop William E. Lori, who so capably led the Diocese of Bridgeport for a decade, has become a atioal leader i articulatig the threats to religious liberty posed by the federal health madate ad other icursios of the state ito the goverace of churches. This is a big momet for Catholic voters to step back from their party affiliatio, he said at this year s Kights of Columbus aual covetio i Aaheim, Califoria. Are ay of the cadidates of either party, or idepedets, stadig for somethig that is itrisically evil, evil o matter what the circumstaces? If that s the case, a Catholic, regardless of his party affiliatio, should t be votig for such a perso. Meawhile, i offerig a beedictio at the Democratic covetio, New York s Cardial Timothy Dola drove home a importat message whe he prayed, Thus do we praise you for the gift of life. Grat us the courage to defed it, life, without which o other rights are secure. We ask your beedictio o those waitig to be bor that they may be welcomed ad protected. He also reewed the call for religious liberty, defese of marriage ad oppositio to a healthcare madate that asks the church to violate its ow teachig. The Uited States Coferece of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has stated that it will ot tell Catholics how to cast their ballots or isist that they vote o oe issue, but as we prepare to head ito the votig booth, the message of our bishops is uified ad clear: the digity of the huma perso ad fudametal right to life should ever be violated. We should first ad foremost protect the most vulerable amog us with our vote. Yet the bishops do ot let ayoe off the hook, regardless of party. They also istruct the faithful i a cosistet life ethic that is opposed to the death pealty, to the excessive use of military force, to the exploitatio ad rejectio of immigrats, ad to the blamig of the poor for their ow sufferig. By this yardstick we all fall short. Ideed, the Church s respect for life across the board challeges us to heed Archbishop Lori s exhortatio that we ot thik as partisas but as Catholics. Based o that demadig ethic, we will all have a great deal of work left to do whe the electio is over. 15 October Editorial They say time flies, ad I have log come to believe that, especially each year whe I celebrate my birthday! But the passig of time so quickly really hit me recetly whe I read stories celebratig the 50th aiversary of Vatica II! As that icredible period i the Catholic Church bega, I was livig i the ewly-formed Diocese of Rockville Cetre o Log Islad, NY, ad had the good fortue of beig hired by Msgr. Richard Haley to write for the Log Islad Catholic, the diocesa Rememberig a Great Priest of Vatica II A Woma s View By Atoiette Bosco Atoiette Bosco is a member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish i Brookfield. paper he had fouded. I was a reporter ad feature writer for that fie publicatio for the ext 10 years. Ad yes, we did cover Vatica II, thaks to this brilliat editorial leader, who sadly died too youg, but lived log eough to lauch what he called a Vatica II diocesa paper! Durig this time I met so may icredible people, oe especially I shall ever forget. He was a Belgia prelate, the icredible Cardial Leo-Jozef Suees, who played a strog role i that mometous evet of the Catholic Church, particularly i his call for a triple dialogue with the faithful, with our separated brethre, with the o-christia world. I got to meet him i a uusual way. I had bee asked to be oe of the speakers at a major coferece beig held at the major semiary o Log Islad, ad Cardial Suees was there. He was so impressed (his words, ot mie) that the semiary had asked a woma to be a speaker that he wated to meet me. Log story short we became frieds! It meat a great deal to me as a reporter, a Catholic ad a woma to hear the wise words of this holy ma. He was way ahead of his time, such a progressive thiker, a promoter of ecumeism (which was still ot overly popular at that time), ad strogly devoted to Mary, mother of Lord Jesus. Later, whe I foud out that he had lost his father at age 4 ad was raised by a devoted mother, I was ot at all surprised at his profoud devotio to Jesus Mother Mary. I told him he should write a book that would ispire Vatica II Catholics, ad he smiled. I 1993, I got a surprise from his close fried, Margie Grace, wife of idustrialist Peter Grace, who wrote me, I kow i those good old days of Vatica II we had correspoded with you ad I thought you would be iterested i relivig some of those experieces. She set me a copy of a ew book by Cardial Suees! titled The Hidde Had of God. I this book he emphasizes the magitude ad importace of the role wome ca take i the Church. Obviously, that is oe of my cherished volumes i my bookcase! A setece I uderlied i that book are his words, Faith is a magifyig glass which helps us to see ad to discover God, secretly ad aoymously at work, i the chace evets of huma life. Ad he adds, the poit is that God acts i mysterious ways to brig people to Him, but always through other people. Most importat for me is that I received a card with a message i his ow hadwritig i April, 1993, three years before his death o May 6, 1996 at the age of 91. Received with joy your kid letter ad your commets o the book. May the Lord be your stregth i daily life ad your joy forever. I sed you a little booklet for Easter readig. With my cordial blessig, L.J. Cardial Suees. This is a gift I keep! Whe I got the ews about his death, I reread a treasure this great priest had set me, the homily he delivered at the opeig of the secod sessio of the Vatica Coucil, i memory of Pope Joh XXIII of holy ad veerated memory: He came, like Joh the Baptist, to bear witess to the light; to make the rough ways plai, to prepare a path, to show Christ to the world; like him, too, his missio was short, cut off by death History will surely judge that he opeed a ew era for the Church I believe sicerely that Cardial Suees took that same path! Morigs are a gift. Do you thik of them that way? I did t used to. But the kids are sometimes catatoic whe I get home i the eveig, so morig is ofte my oly real time with them. I m learig to love it. We are early risers. I fought it for years, beggig ad pleadig to be allowed just a few more precious momets of shut eye. Occasioally the kids would oblige, briefly. Niety secods later they d be back from their ow beds, twice as eager to go dowstairs. Do you kow how early it Morig has broke A Dad s View By Matthew Heessey Matthew Heessey ad his family are parishioers of St. Aloysius i New Caaa. is? I croak. You might as well ask who they re votig for. You d get the same blak look. So I ve resiged myself. For the ext few years, I ll be gettig up well before the proverbial cock crows. Most morigs I m wakeed by my middle child, Magdalea. She is six. Gettig out of bed is what she was bor to do. She is blessed to have discovered her true callig at a early age. There are other thigs she does well, ad other thigs she loves to do, but risig ad shiig is the trigger clause of her cotract with the world. I sometimes imagie that Magdalea wakes to the soud of urget voices whisperig oly to her. Get up! they say. Get up! Dora ad Elmo are eatig your breakfast ad playig with your toys! You re missig everythig! Get up! Most of the time we let Magdalea ito our bed. Strictly speakig, this is somethig you are ot supposed to do, as it rewards the child for beig a early bird ad provides a icetive for tomorrow s bad behavior. But bitter experiece has taught me that it s either the bed or the breakfast table, so we pull back the covers ad let her climb i. As she is mostly elbows ad kees, it is t log before oe of us gives i ad takes her dowstairs. My so usually is t far behid. Paddy is a America boy of the four-year-old variety, which meas there is o middle gear i his trasmissio. He has two speeds: out cold ad full blast. His eyes ope at first light, his aked feet hit the cold floor, ad i a istat he is by your side i the kitche, bleary-eyed ad demadig to kow, Wass for breffest, huh Dad? You have a choice, I say. Dirt Flakes or Mii Worms. No, Dad, yer juss bee silly. Wass the reeeeeel breffest, huh? Clara, the eight-year-old, is the oly oe to have figured out what every paret kows to be true: sleepig late is its ow reward. At her age, lougig i bed while your sibligs eat their breakfast is at least as good a optio as beig awake ad havig them aoy you while you eat yours. At the table, I cut baaas ito their cereal ad ask what they dreamt about. Mostly they do t remember. I ask them what they re lookig forward to about the day ahead. Mostly they ca t aswer. They are madly devoted to the here ad ow. Yesterday meas othig. Who reads old ews? Tomorrow is a o-etity to a child. Why worry about it whe today is already here? I watch them eat. They see me watchig ad smile with mouths full. What a blessig to be so preset. I have may dreams I wish I could forget. Ad there are may morigs whe I positively dread the day ahead. But beig with them for a hour or two is toic eough to beat back my mild misathropy. No matter how tired I am i the morig, or how much I wish I could stay i bed just a few miutes more, I summo the stregth to rise. I kow oe day I ll be eatig breffest i a gloomig peace with silece to spare. O that day I ll wish I had a little oodge to drag me out of bed before daw to ask me who puts the milk i the carto or why do t spoos have ames? As Yogi Berra said, it gets late You have a choice, I say. Dirt Flakes or Mii Worms. early aroud here. I do t wat to miss a miute of it.

16 16 October 2012 Respect Life Billboards carry a getle message of life By PAT HENNESSY A ifat gazed i puzzlemet from a billboard o a busy corer i Dabury. What about MY right to choose? he asked. The billboard, the first of several sposored by the Respect Life Committee at St. Mary Parish i Ridgefield this seaso, was i o way aggressive or cofrotatioal. We try to chage hearts ad mids by ecouragig people to use logic, says Hak Vosswikle, co-chair of the committee ad head of the billboard Direct Your Future at Sacred Heart. TOUR DAY... They step up, they take aim, they produce ad ever agai do they see themselves i quite the same light. Greewich, CT project. The Pro-Life Committee has carefully chose their billboard locatios, both i Dabury ad i Bridgeport, placig them where they will be see by thousads of people o a daily basis. The campaigs have ever bee egative, adds Joh Papa, the committee s other co-chair. I thik that s importat. I a getle ad forgivig ad carig way, we re startig a dialog. We ve had othig but positive resposes. St. Mary s is proud of its Respect Life activities, which go A idepedet, Catholic school for girls from preschool through grade 12 o throughout the year. From the March for Life i Washigto, DC, to support for Birthright pregacy couselig ceters ad Project Rachel post-abortio healig, the committee works to develop the culture of life i Fairfield Couty. Because of their impact o so may people, the billboards are a importat part of that effort. The successful billboard campaig has bee i place for over te years, leadig thousads to cosider the message of life they carry. I m pleased that our parish Respect Life Committee has arraged for billboards to advertise a truth that lies at the heart of our Catholic faith the sactity of every huma life, created i the image ad likeess of God, says Msgr. Laurece Brokiewicz, St. Mary s pastor. I a letter to parishioers, Msgr. Brokiewicz poited out that over a millio childre are aborted every year. The vast majority of abortios occur because the mother is iflueced by fear, igorace, or pressure from others ad does ot realize that she has other optios, he wrote. The billboards which you sposor provide factual iformatio about the developmet of the pre-bor child, iformatio about adoptio, ad toll-free telephoe umbers of orgaizatios that assist wome i carryig their pregacies to term, or i healig for those hurtig after a abortio. He added that, Sadly, these may cotiue to be the oly pro-life messages that may ever see. The Respect Life Committee is curretly sposorig two Respect Life billboards i Dabury, both at busy itersectios. Due to the way traffic moves through the city, they lie at either side of the campus of Wester Coecticut State Uiversity (WestCONN). Because they are focused o developig a respect for life, the committee takes great care i choosig the images ad wordig for their message. We try to put them i the areas that eed the most help, that eed the most hope, says Papa. While the questioig baby graced the billboards i August, durig September the message showed a pesive youg woma, ad asked Pregat? Worried? Offerig practical support, the billboard carried the phoe umber for the Birthright Couselig Ceter i Dabury. The Birthright office is right dow the block, so the billboard may direct a youg woma to someoe who ca help her, observes Vosswikle. St. Mary s is also sposorig two billboards i Bridgeport i October. I keepig with its itet to reach the most people, the oe i dowtow Bridgeport will carry its message i both Eglish ad Spaish. St. Mary s is hopig that other parishes will joi the billboard campaig. Oe that already has is St. Rose of Lima Parish i Newtow. We started two years ago, says Helga Roegele, chair of the Respect Life Committee at St. Rose. Our first billboard showed a youg, pretty woma with a baby i her arm. It said Love is simple choose life. The billboards St. Rose sposors are alog Route 25, the mai artery betwee Bridgeport ad Dabury. Route 25 is a heavily traveled road, ad I thik this a good way to spread our message, says Roegele. It s platig a seed; gettig people to thik. As at St. Mary s, the Respect Life movemet at St. Rose is active throughout the year. Our baby bottle drive is ogoig, all year log, Roegele says. We ve collected over $5,000 to help local pregacy ceters. Durig a baby shower for the Daughters of Charity, parishioers set a va full of baby items for wome i crisis pregacies. I October, both parishes pla to sposor billboards with a Vote for Life message, featurig a ubor child with the message So I will have a chace, too. As the seasos chage, so will the message. Both parishes are plaig to sposor billboards durig the Christmas seaso showig the ubor Christ, a halo framig his head, with the cotiued o page 17

Nurses, by ad large, are ofte take for grated, see but ot heard. The Parish Nurse Program was started whe I was pastor at St. Augustie Cathedral (ow part of the Cathedral Parish) i Bridgeport. We had a very diverse commuity there, ad I was happy to be part of it, St Joseph High School As we choose... so we become says Msgr. Scheyd. Whe I moved o to St. Thomas i East Norwalk, I brought the program there. Ad the we established the Parish Nurse Program here at St. Aloysius. It s helpful i so may ways. What are the duties of a parish urse? Well, depedig o the momet or the situatio, she or he will serve as a health educator. As a health couselor. As a referral service. Some of the participatig urses are full-time at the hospital, others work i agecies, ad some are employed i doctors offices. Some of the urses are retired, but they remai active by voluteerig at their parishes. Msgr. Scheyd calls Sr. Mary Jea a ethusiastic, woderful perso ad the perfect salesma for dealig with the public. Griffi Hospital i Derby lauched the first Parish Nurse Program i Coecticut. St. Vicet s Medical Ceter followed suit shortly thereafter, ad ow Dabury Hospital, the Hospital of St. Raphael i New Have, Lawrece + Memorial Hospital i New Lodo ad St. Mary s Hospital i Waterbury also sposor a program. Ideed, the Parish Nurse Program has become iteratioal i scope, with urses participatig i Caada, Great Britai, Scotlad, Australia, Ukraie, Korea, Malaysia, Palestie, South Africa, Nigeria ad several other Africa atios. We do so may thigs for the parish, says Claire Frillici, RN, a retired urse who has bee ivolved with the St. Vicet s Parish Nurse Program for some 18 years at Our Lady of the Assumptio Parish i Fairfield. I the early years, we did may fairs childre s fairs, health fairs. O the secod Suday of every moth, we do blood pressure screeigs after every Mass. Oce a moth, we prepare a etire meal for Operatio Hope. We also coduct flu cliics i October ad November. Oe might assume that the St. Vicet s program is largely Catholic i scope, but that is t the case. Nearly 35 Protestat churches are amog the 73 parishes ad cogregatios located i 16 Fairfield Couty tows ad cities curretly active i the program. Iroically, the Parish Nurse Program was created by a Luthera miister i Chicago i the 1980s. Marily Faber, RN, who works i Sr. Mary Jea s office ad holds the title Liaiso Nurse, is ivolved with the Parish Nurse Program at her church, Nichols Uited Methodist, i Trumbull. 19 October Respect Life Agels i the priso FR. BERNARDO RODRIGUEZ (Fr. Rodriguez is the Catholic chaplai i the Bridgeport Correctioal Ceter ad Garer Correctioal Istitutio i Newtow.) The chow hall was full of tables ad chairs. I oe corer, about twety imates were listeig to the explaatio of a voluteer about the Gospel of the day. A youg ma, lookig dow ad with tears i his eyes, said: If someoe had told me this before, I would t be i jail. This is the great work that the voluteers brig to the jail. Sometimes we woder how thigs keep workig, whe everythig aroud looks so hard ad difficult, ad the we see the had of God multiplyig the few pieces of bread that everybody may eat it. I was i priso ad you visited me (Matt. 25, 36). That is icluded i the test that we have to pass at the ed, ad the Diocese of Bridgeport is doig its part. Lay people, Sisters, deacos ad priests every week brig the word of God to the prisos i Fairfield Couty. Sometimes I woder why these woderful people are visitig the imates. Ad I woder because this is the least glamorous ad ofte most frustratig of the miistries. You eed to fight some of the prejudices that exist i our society. The fear for your safety, for example, whe the reality is that you will ever be as safe as iside of a priso. Not just because the officers, but because the imates themselves will protect you. You do eed to have a lot of faith, because you almost ever see the fruit of your work. The imates that succeed do t come back to the jail ad you oly see the failures, the people that did t make it this time. But you keep workig, ot because you trust i your talets, but because you kow that God is behid the scees multiplyig your efforts. You eed to fight the public uderstadig of why waste your time ad work with people that hurt society, whe you kow that every imate is your brother ad God did t give up o him. Ad you keep goig to jail brigig hope, the love of God ad the joy of a Christia, tellig the imates that they are ot forgotte. Prisos are a battlegroud where the forces of evil try to coquer as may childre of God as they ca, ad you see the workig of God clearly as ever before. Sometimes I m amazed as I see the lightig of God i the darkest situatio, whe by your ow efforts it was impossible to plat a seed of hope. The voluteers are the first lie i this battlegroud. Yes, we have people like that. Christias who are comig from Bridgeport, Newtow, Fairfield, Stratford, Shelto. Good people; committed people with the fire of the love of God i their hearts. I m so grateful to them. The eed is so great ad I could t eve make a det by myself. Because this woderful group of voluteers, may of these eeds are solved. Please keep them i your prayers ad, if God is callig you, try to serve i the priso miistry. Remember the test that we have to pass. 23 October Review A sait for youg Christias By JAVIER SOEGAARD Fr. Aloysius Hribšek, a retired priest of the Diocese of Bridgeport ad a ative of Sloveia, offers Blessed Aloysius Grozde: A Teeage Witess for Christ the Kig, a small, egagig biography of his compatriot. He wats the very huma story of the youg ma, referred to throughout the book as Loyze, complete with his love for family, ature, faith, literature ad causig trouble to ispire faith at the Mariaum Istitute i Ljubljaa. The other studets would ofte pick o him because he was loely ad homesick. I oe of the fuier though defiitely ot to be ecouraged momets of Loyze s life, he oce respoded to a bully by displayig his obvious skill i kife-throwig. Who says saits caot have tempers! Thereafter, violece was ever Loyze s mai outlet for his feeligs ad frustratios, rather it was his poetry. Throughout the book, Fr. Hribšek does a woderful job of allowig Loyze s ow words to covey how deep this youg ma s faith ad emotios truly were. I some of his most profoud verses he says: It is so good to be aloe, Although by all the world ukow, Although igored by huma love, I kow I m loved by God above. Oh soud of silece, such sweet toe, Reflex of beauty, God s aloe, I sese its echo i my soul, Ow othig, yet possess it all. While the chapters illustratig Loyze s growth as a studet, a writer ad a leader provide a ispirig story about the huma spirit, it is the later chapters, which deal with Loyze s faith ad martyrdom, that most egage ad move the reader spiritually. The title of Chapter X reflects Loyze s ow persoal motto: The Holy Eucharist The Su of My Life. About his devotio to the Holy Mass, a fellow studet remarked, At least durig the last two years of his life, I do t recall a sigle day that he would omit receivig Commuio. Attedig Mass ad receivig Commuio were the ceter of his etire existece. This would be commedable i ay cotext, but give the violece the growig Commuist Partisas iflicted upo practicig Catholics, it was heroic. Readers who are accustomed to classic Christia martyrdom texts will ot fid aythig remiiscet of them i Fr. Hribšek s peultimate chapter. Blessed Loyze is ot recorded as recitig ay orate scriptural or liturgical verses to his captors. Rather, he stood siletly i God s Name as the soldiers publicly tortured him i a most horrible way. Readers should be wared that Fr. Hribšek does provide the precise, disturbig details of Loyze s martyrdom. However, it is clear that he does ot do this for the sake of illustratig juicy details, but rather to give the hoest story of a youg ma who gave his all for Jesus Christ ad the Church. The book is particularly appropriate for youg people because it emphasizes how Loyze s most huma qualities were, i fact, those which led him most to Christ. He is a great sait for youg Christias growig up i turbulet times, ad Fr. Hribšek should be thaked for offerig this story to the Eglish-speakig world. 25 October 2012 Youth Resposibility of Catholic Citizes i a Free Society By KATHLEEN K. MORTON As Catholics i a free society, we are surrouded by challeges like poverty, abortio ad violece, which all damage the existece of humas created i the image ad likeess of God who are ofte ot able to sustai life because of society s distorted view of morality. It is our obligatio to assist ad support people who suffer these plights. As Catholics we must defed the digity of huma life, promote peace ad justice, uphold the family values that are beig destroyed. Beig Catholic i a free society is to have the ability to live our faith ad defed our religio while havig the resposibility to spread the word of God. Our first ad foremost resposibility is to Christ. Goig to Mass every week, receivig Holy Commuio, as well as livig the Gospel are all a part of beig a geuie Catholic. We are called to protect the importace of huma life by actively opposig abortio, the death pealty ad euthaasia. A millio babies are lost each year to abortio as the result of uwated pregacy ad to the destructio of huma embryos for the sake of research. It is ot eough to protest abortio, but to also provide assistace to wome so they are able to adequately raise the child they have coceived. As Catholics, we have to oppose euthaasia because it is ot our decisio, or a doctor s choice, to determie our time to die. Over 20,000 people die each year from euthaasia, ad we must oppose all legislatio ad practice of this travesty i the medical field. The way that society deals with crimials through capital puishmet is also regrettable. The defese of the commo good requires that a ujust assailat be redered uable to cause harm so a acceptable way to brig justice would be to put a crimial i jail. Killig them ad classifyig it as capital puishmet is simply a way to legalize murder, ad does ot, i the ed, brig justice to ayoe. I today s society we must ecourage true justice ad the sactity of all huma life. We must cocer ourselves with helpig the poor by voluteerig i shelters, food patries, ad soup kitches. As Catholics we must recogize those less fortuate ad help them overcome poverty. Esurig access to educatio, providig opportuities for decet work, ad givig adequate assistace to the vulerable are all admirable ways to promote Catholic teachigs. Accordig to Catholic Social Teachig, solidarity is a virtue that bids everyoe together so that we may all be oe family. This meas that we ot oly celebrate together, but suffer together as well. So, to put a ed to that sufferig, we must help the eedy i our commuities with our time, talets ad treasures. As Catholics i a free society, we are here to provide a example of moral people livig Christ-like lives i a society that ofte rejects God ad his teachigs. It is our resposibility to help spread the Gospel ot oly through our words, but our actios as well. By reachig out to the govermet o social issues, doatig time ad fiacial assistace to the Church, ad actively livig out the Gospel we ca meet ad eve exceed our obligatios as Catholics i our moder society. We re goig to Edwardsville. Okay. What s i Edwardsville? I asked. I m takig you to get your substitute teachig licese. Oh, Dad. I wated my ow master bedroom ad the life I had expected to live. Work is good therapy, Deise. That oe lie would become oe of those dad-isms that would stay with me forever. I dragged myself away from the table, showered ad dressed. I spet the last six weeks of that school year substitutig i classrooms all over Collisville, Illiois. The calls came aroud five i the morig. The phoe hug o the wall above my head. I hated that phoe. I had a otepad by the bed o which to write the directios whe a call came. Through sleepy fog, I would scratch the ames of streets, alog with a series of rights ad lefts. I would hag up the phoe, doubtful that I could fid the school. Cofidet I did t wat to fid the school. Positive I eeded to fid the school because I was broke. My husbad ad I were separated but ot divorced. Havig o legal obligatio to cotribute to our fiacial eeds, my husbad decided that $40 a moth would suffice. Ad so, I relied o substitute teachig to get us through each moth. I did ot wat to live like this. I did ot wat to do aythig to support a life I did t ejoy. I wated to sleep. Ad ever wake up. I was supposed to be the happy mother of three childre, livig i suburbia, with a husbad. I was ot supposed to be substitutig i a kidergarte classroom whe my degree was i secodary Eglish educatio. O the way to the school, the tears would come. I could t hold them back. Tears ad more tears. I arrived at the schools each morig ad waited for five miutes to pass so that my face would retur to ormal after the oslaught of a early morig meltdow. I would check my face i the mirror. Get rid of the mascara uder my eyes. Ope the door ad step out of the car. Ad I would head ito the school. It was my daily routie for six weeks. Work is good therapy. Dad was t the oly oe who kew it was true. The Church kows it s true. We are all called to hold the uemployed ad the uderemployed i our hearts as we pray for work security. There is a digity i work. 29 October Colum The Frieds who got away We are molded ad remolded by those who have loved us, ad though the love may pass, we are, evertheless, their work, for good or bad (Fracois Mauriac). We all have oe: a story about a fried who got away. Ad at the heart of each story is the recogitio that we do t forget it the loss of a friedship. My life is riddled with holes where frieds oce were, people who were my compagos de voyage. It seems that friedship is so vulerable, overcome by space, time, imperfect sympathies. There was my boyhood buddy, Doald, with whom I Potpourri By Thomas H. Hicks Thomas Hicks is a member of St. Theresa Parish i Trumbull. oce ra had i had kickig up the leathery leaves dow Stahope Street so may years ago. There were all the small advetures we shared. That sweet compaio of my boyhood moved whe we were ie years old. It was a kid of heartbreak. I did t wat him to go. O movig day, Doald ad I promised we d keep i touch. We did t. The he ra dow the sidewalk, ad it was the last time I ever saw him. Whe I ca t sleep at ight, I sometimes thik about Doald. I woder where he is, what he s doig. Did he ever thik of me? I met Joh at college. The two of us had a chemistry together. There was the delicious feelig of uity ad safety together. We cowrote papers, spet several vacatios together. He was a fried with whom I was certai I would grow old. At a relatively youg age, Joh died of colo cacer. This may soud strage, but I thik that, though I expected Joh to die, I did ot expect him to stay dead. Whe he did stay dead, year after year, I was astoished by it. He is still sugly housed i my heart. There was Barbara, i the bloom of youg womahood, shyly ad effortlessly lovely. She wore o makeup ad just a little perfect jewelry. She made little motios which edeared her to me, like her etracig way of pursig ad partig her lips, tuckig a stray hair behid her ear while chattig, edig her seteces i a soft modulatio upwards. I could ever hear my ame i her fresh youg trill without a stir of pleasure. Ad she smiled a rare surise smile. I leared from her how sweet a huma presece could be, For a time she made me feel so ecessary. The relatioship looseed, somehow uraveled. I thik we recogized we were fudametally differet. We stayed i touch itermittetly through occasioal phoe calls, ad the it eded. Now I feel my heart skip a beat whe I see a youg woma of a certai femiie grace emerge from a Carvel or wait i frot of a Starbucks, givig someoe she suddely spots o the street a big smile as Barbara used to greet me. Barbara comes back to me. Where is she ow? Other friedships formed ad faded. There are may reasos why friedships fail or ed: life chages a move, a marriage, a baby, someoe s career success. Wouded pride plays a part, as do resetmets, a sese of betrayal. Oe or the other makes a misjudgmet, ad misuderstadigs are uresolved; words of apology or explaatio uspoke. Somethig shifts somewhere; thigs are ot as they used to be. Friedships ca blow up or fade out. Some friedships probably just ru their course, ru out of breath. As I look back o my life, I wish I had hadled some thigs differetly, tried to save what was there betwee us, ot let it flow away so easily. I hear the voice of love lost or ot pursued, a valued relatioship give up. I our ecouters with others we fail ad are failed. I some elemetal way lost frieds are ever reliquished. They are ghosts who will ot depart. They remai a presece, a regret, a ache. They caot be scraped away, they are idelible imprits. I believe frieds are ot part of our lives by accidet. They are assiged to us by God. Out of the welter of life, a few people are selected for us. I could ot imagie what I would have bee without them, or ca I imagie it to this day because they are i so may ways a part of me still. Aristotle said that frieds are eeded for happiess, they eoble huma life. May God bless ad guide all those frieds who came i ad out of my life. Perhaps the most astoishig thig is ot the friedships we have lost, but those we have kept. To have formed a few very deep ad lastig friedships is the blessig of a lifetime.
