TRINITY BELLS MARCH 2018 My Dear Trinitarians, One of my favorite thinkers is Walter Brueggemann who is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, a prolific author, and an Old Testament Professor. I have been greatly enriched by reading and praying along with a new book of his, A Way Other Than Our Own: Devotions For Lent. As I am writing this to you, we are at the mid-point roughly of our Lenten Journey. I don t usually quote others (let alone at length) in this column, however this captivated me as such a wonderful way to look at Lent and the second part of Lent)! Brueggemann says this: Popular Lent is too much preoccupied with guilt and repentance... Lent is rather seeing how to take steps into God s future so that we are no longer defined by what is past and no longer distracted by what we have treasured or feared about the present. Lent is for embracing the baby given to old people; resurrection to new life in Easter; and the offer of a new world made by God from nothing....it turns out that the world teems with verification, concerning babies from the barren ones, lives that have surged in the midst of death, estrangements that have been reconciled, enslavements that have turned to freedom: all around us, particular, concrete, specific for people like us....[here next is the kicker and challenge Brueggemann offers what a zinger!] So imagine in this Lenten season, moving beyond treasured pasts, moving beyond precious present tense arrangements to new God-given prospects. Allowing God to work in and on our imaginations is such a significant component of a life of prayer. We are, after all the Jesus Movement gathered by the saving power of Christ, and moving always in the light of Easter further into the abundant life of God. May it be so for all of us, and may we all live out the rest of this Lenten season turning to God in joy and hope! In Christ,

BURNING BOOKS BREAKFAST HOSTED BY MARGO The next meeting of Burning Books will be on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:30 pm at the home of Gloria Ciolli, 119 Pine Tree Lane in Roslyn Heights ( ). We'll be discussing Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance, which the Wall Street Journal called "a riveting book". A #1 New York Times bestseller, it was named by the Times as one of "6 books to help understand Trump's win" and is soon to be a major-motion picture directed by Ron Howard. Our selection following that will be Commonwealth by Ann Patchett, a "rich and engrossing new novel" (NY Times) which follows two semi-connected families, as the children become adults and the grown-ups become old. Date and place TBD. As always, all are welcome. John Platt On New Year s Eve Day, a hearty bunch braved the frigid weather to come out to celebrate Eucharist at Trinity in the Fireplace Room and enjoy a delicious hot breakfast hosted by Margo. The Egg & Sausage Breakfast Dish is a family tradition in Margo s home, and she is happy to share the recipe here below. MUSIC NOTES My Final Concert with the Trinity Choir is Sunday, April 29th at 4:00 - please come and share in a celebration of the lovely sacred music we have been privileged to share at Trinity Church for so many decades. It s free! We will sing favorite hymns and anthems, enjoy the beautiful organ, and revel in the wonderful fellowship of our community. Hope to see you there, and at all the special services as we observe Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter. 6 FROM THE WARDENS We bid farewell to outgoing Senior Warden John Platt at our Annual Meeting, and recognized the many years of service he has dedicated to Trinity. John was a wonderful model to me as I was learning the ropes. Now I look forward to sharing what I have learned with Liz Kaye, who has stepped up to fill the position of Warden. Liz had been serving as Treasurer, and so has good insights into what is going on at Trinity and the challenges we face. Sheila Platt has agreed to serve as Treasurer, while Liz will continue to share her expertise in this area. I look forward to working with this new and very capable team. We continue to move forward with our floor repair project. As you may know, thanks to Doreen Banks and Tom Cammisa we now have several grants lined up that will cover this cost. The needed repairs will take place around the perimeter of the central church and the east transept (which is on the right as you face the altar). Fortunately, the floor in the center of the church is stable and not in need of repair. Thanks are also due to Bob debruin who has been working with the contractor on planning this project. It makes sense to think about other repairs or projects that could be done in conjunction with the floor repairs. One idea is to install ceiling fans to keep the church cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. If you have any ideas, please speak with me, Liz or Margo. Checking how many people fit in a pew Ken Bongort presented a number of possible pew configurations after the service on February 24. The design that was favored by most is shown below. It unifies the transepts and the central church and frees up space in the rear of the church for gatherings such as receptions and possibly coffee hours. This is a very exciting time to be at Trinity! Helen Oehrlein, Warden WELCOME NEW WARDEN LIZ KAYE! Margo with outgoing Warden John Platt, new warden Liz Kaye & Warden Helen Oehrlein at Annual Meeting Dear Parishioners, As a new warden, I feel somewhat like a toddler taking my early steps. Especially following a leader like John Platt, I have a lot to learn! I have spent the first two months observing Helen, Senior Warden, trying to catch up on all the projects on the list, especially the floor and new pew configuration. Helen, Sheila Platt and I attended Jerry Keucher's Treasurer's workshop at the Mercer School on managing the Church's assets. Helen, Tom Cammisa and I are meeting monthly with Marie from the Daycare Center to learn more about Marie's programs and receive updates on the Center's projected growth - all very exciting. Please continue to support Trinity with your pledges, time and talent and I look forward to an exciting and busy year. Elizabeth Kaye

PARISH HAPPENINGS SHROVE SUNDAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST Can you name the faces behind these masks??? Epiphany pageant crew lines up for communion Jan 7 Congratulations Grandma Jean & Grandpa Bob Henning! EGGS, ANYONE? Nina Henning with daughter Tenzin & new son Samten (good Tibetan names!) Julia Price s February birthday These exquisite wooden eggs were made by our very own Aleta Crawford. She said, I decorate eggs and give them away. Each one takes about 5 hours or more of work. They are generally made of wood and I coat them with acrylic Gesso several times to make a smooth white surface which I color with ink pens or paint Then I spray them several times with clear acrylic to protect the surface. The patterns are usually adapted from flat designs that I see here and there - many this year were interlacing loops. Since I tend to make more than I can keep or give to family I give them to my friends - and for several years, I offered them to choir members. Anyone else in the church who is interested can contact me and get a choice of eggs for their own. View them in the fullcolor newsletter on our website-

10 LIFE LESSONS I WILL FINALLY LEARN IN is not life. is not life. is not life. What was the world actually like before automatic refresh? What a sweet time. 2. You can never have enough time with your friends. Especially relevant in the winter and between the hours of 4 and 11 pm. 3. Little treats make you feel like you own a yacht. So, treat yo-self. Yachts are neat, too Being outside makes you feel alive. Get out there. You re one mountain away from being the new face of the Patagonia 2018 campaign. SAINT JOHN S BIBLE PRESENTATION On Tues, Feb 27, a rare Heritage Edition of The Saint John s Bible traveled from the Cathedral in Garden City to Trinity Church, Roslyn for a special presentation by the dean of the Cathedral, the Very Rev. Michael Sniffen. The breadth and scope of The Saint John s Bible has been compared to that of The Sistine Chapel. It is the first illuminated, handwritten bible commissioned since the medieval period, and an international team of calligraphers and artists spent fifteen years creating it. It measures 2 feet by 3 feet, and was produced in the way that Catholic monks made Bibles in medieval times, drawn painstakingly by hand. 5. Your parents really are doing their best. And it s pretty damn awesome. 6. Yes, you can use all the 23 face creams on your sink. Every essential oil combination is a crucial element of your regimen!!! 7. You can walk away from unsafe people. You deserve this act of love. 8. Ask early and often for help. People usually don t mind being asked. From hugs to casseroles, your people will have your back. All you have to do is reach out a hand. 9. The world will not implode if you say no to things you don t actually want to / have time to do. See Lesson # A margarita is always a good idea. See Lesson #2. Kate Bowler, author Kate Bowler is an assistant professor at Duke Divinity School. A graduate of Yale Divinity School and Duke University, Bowler is the author of Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and son.

Dear Parishioners: It s been a rough couple of months at the Child Care Center; every child (without exception) has been ill for a day or two or week; and every staff member (without exception) has been ill for a day or two or week. But it seems to have peaked and we are on the mend and ready to fight our next battle. Our classes are happy and busy and buzzing with activities. Our Preschool is now in a new classroom, and the children and staff are very pleased with the change. We have more space with new activity centers, and the children are developing a love for science and math and literacy. In fact, at the end of next month we hope that Ms. Holzkamp will be available to teach our preschoolers about caterpillars and butterflies and how life develops. We are looking forward to the lesson. Mother Margo with the children at the Childcare Center Our new toddler classroom will be open in a few weeks. Our younger students are ready for the change, and each week brings astonishing development. We can t wait to have two toddler classrooms (one for 18 months to 24 months and the other from 25 months to 36 months). We are in the process of hiring a new toddler teacher (we have enough assistants) for the younger class and look forward to a new year of growth. Our infant class, as always, is happy and thriving. We have new students in the wings ready to pounce and exercise their lungs. It is a very happy room that always brings a smile to one s face. We see a bright and prosperous future on the horizon and are very much looking forward to the spring. We are hosting an Open House on March 24 th between 12 and 2 and hope for a successful event as the last Open House. As always, we thank you for your support and confidence. 11 PEAR CAKE WITH GLAZE (NYT) 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), at room temperature, more to grease the pan 1 cup granulated sugar ½ cup dark brown sugar 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon fine sea salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg ⅛ teaspoon ground clove ½ teaspoon baking soda 4 large eggs, at room temperature 4 large pears (2 1/4 pounds), peeled, cored and shredded or finely chopped (to yield 2 1/2 cups) 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup rolled oats ½ cup toasted walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional) BROWN BUTTER GLAZE: 5 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 cup confectioners sugar 3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk, more as needed 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of salt Prepare the cake: Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-by-2-inch square or 9-inch-round pan and line bottom with parchment paper. Using an electric mixer, beat butter until light and fluffy. Add sugars, baking powder, salt, vanilla, nutmeg, cloves and baking soda and beat for 1 minute. Beat in eggs, one at a time. With the mixer on low, beat in half the pears, and then beat in the flour until smooth. Beat in remaining pears, then the oats, beating until well incorporated. Beat in nuts. Spread batter in the prepared pan and bake until the top springs back when lightly pressed in the center of the cake, 40 to 50 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Prepare the glaze: In a small saucepan, melt butter, then let it simmer until the foam on top falls to the bottom of the pot and turns brown, about 3 minutes. It will smell nutty and rich when it s ready. Whisk in brown sugar until it dissolves. Whisk in confectioners sugar, cream, vanilla and salt until you ve got a thick glaze with the texture of hot fudge sauce. Spread this over the cooled cake. Let the glaze set for at least 2 hours before serving.
