1 Purim Lesson Objectives: Expose the children to the holiday vocabulary Vocabulary: King, queen, hamentashen, mask, crown, costume, clown, party, gifts, Purim characters. Material and songs: Max the puppet Flashcards of Purim characters, clown, party, costume Authentic items of any of the above Paper napkins for each child + Hamentashen (optional) Optional- Sweets for filling the paper Hamentashen Optional-Masks for pupils to decorate in class and decorating items: stickers, glitter, glue, bands. Optional- A paper filled Hamentashen Songs and Chants: Good morning and how do you do? (song #1.13) Purim is today (song 1.58) The clown song (1.60) Goodbye dear pupils (1.12) Prior to lesson make sure you: Have all materials Have hamentashen for all pupils (optional)

2 Lesson Procedure: I. Introductions and Greetings - Sing the "Good Morning" song (1.13) Vocabulary: - Say- "Happy Holidays pupils" (sandwich the word holiday so that the pupils understand- ( holidays -חגים- holidays " - Max says: "Happy holidays, Happy Purim". - Ask: Happy holiday, happy Pesach, Happy Channuka; What holiday is coming up Max? - Have Max ask: Mmmm.. What holiday is coming up pupils? - Have pupils reply: Purim. - Have Max walk around the class and greet the pupils. Pupil to pupil: - Call on two pupils to come to the front of the class and have the first pupil ask the pupil standing opposite him/her: " What holiday is coming soon? - The pupil replies: - Purim is coming. - Teacher asks the pupils- Is Purim a happy or sad holiday? - Both pupils reply- Purim is a happy holiday! - Have both pupils greet one another with "Happy Purim". "Happy holidays". - Have pupils greet their friends the same way. - Teacher says- On Purim we give gifts to the poor and to our friends and we put on costumes (use translation when necessary). Vocabulary - Introduce the characters of Purim using flashcards. - Teacher Says: "What do you see?" - Have pupils reply :(Hamman, Achashverosh, Mordechai, Esther Hamentashen, Mask, costume,clown). - Ask the pupils: How does Hamman feel? Is he good or bad? Is he happy? continue with the rest of the characters.

3 Game - Have pupils come up to the board point to a character, say his/her name and number the character according to your instructions. - Play What's missing" with the pupils. Ask pupils to close their eyes as you hide a flashcard behind your back. Ask the pupils to open their eyes and say- What s missing? Pupils have to guess the missing card. Song - Sing "Purim is Today" (1.58) with intonations. - Sing "Purim song" (1.59) with intonations. Pupils can stand in pairs and dance with their partners. Activity Page - Show the clown page to the pupils and say: "What do you see?" - Pupils reply: "I see a clown" - Say: "What is the clown holding?" - Elicit: "The clown is holding balloons". - Say: "How many balloons is the clown holding?" - Elicit: "The clown is holding 7 balloons" - Hand out the page to the pupils and say: "Point to balloon number 1", continue to do the same with all the other balloons. - Ask the children to color the balloons according to your instructions. Optional activities- - Prepare a greeting card for your family or a friend (see attached below). - Prepare a Hamentashen shaped page filled with sweets with your classmates at the end of the lesson (see below). Ask the pupils to write their names on little cards. Fold the cards and put them into the Emotion Cube or into a hat. Pass the cube/hat around and have pupils take out a name of a classmate they have to give their Hamantashen to. Each child exchanges sweets with someone else in the classroom. - Decorate the masks of Queen Ester for girls and King Achashverosh for the boys (see below) Song - Sing The Clown Song (1.59) with intonations.

4 Reflection - Ask the children which words they remember from the Purim Lesson - Ask them what they liked best. - Put on the Purim songs and have a little party. Hand out the Hamentashen to the pupils. Song - Sing The Goodbye Dear Pupils song (1.12). Happy holidays!!!!

13 Hamentashen 4 large eggs 1 cup oil 1-1/2 cups sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 cups flour a pinch of lemon rind Ingredients for the filling: 675 g prune butter 175 g seedless raisins 125 g chopped walnuts Grated rind of 1 lemon or orange 1 tbsp vegetable oil Beat eggs, then add remaining ingredients, beating well after each addition. Roll out dough and cut out circles. (I use the rimmed end of a drinking glass, dipped in flour each time.) Put one teaspoon of filling in center. Fold over edges in three sections. Bake at 350F for about 20 min.
