TRINITY BELLS JUNE 2012 TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH 1579 Northern Blvd. Roslyn, NY

FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN We ve had a couple of opportunities to see the Trinity community in action recently. One was the annual tag sale. Under the direction of Helen Oehrlein this year, a fabulous team of volunteers of all ages and both sexes turned out to set it up, run it that day, then clean up afterward. As Helen has reported, we took in over $3,000, but, just as important, we worked together for a good cause. There was also evidence of the Trinity community on a less happy occasion. Following the sudden and tragic death of Nancy Krug, Trinity members rallied round to provide refreshments for the evening calling hours and dishes for the Krug family to have at mealtimes. Of course, the food came with our love and prayers to Don, Perry, and Nolan during this saddest of times. I bring these examples up not to congratulate ourselves for being good people, but to remind us that this is what we do as a church family. As we enter into our summer schedule, we may see less of each other, but there will still be things we can do. As just one example, Mike Callahan is recovering from heart surgery and could use help with routine maintenance matters. If you want details or more suggestions, just check in with Margo, Don Krug (about maintenance), or members of our Outreach team. In spite of our modest numbers, our secret strength is that we are a caring community, and as our mission statement once said, We answer the call of those in need. John Platt BURNING BOOKS The summer selection of Burning Books is the classic Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. We all know the story, but how does it hold up to read it now as adults? We will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 in the Fireplace Room with Marylou Minard ( ) as host. Newcomers always welcome! John Platt REFRIGERATOR FREE FOR THE TAKING Do you know someone who could use a cube refrigerator? Maybe for a dormitory or small apartment? or for extra food storage in the basement? It s FREE- you just need to pick it up at the church. Please contact the church office if you are interested ( ). Helen Oehrlein

CLASSICS CONCERT A HUGE SUCCESS! MUSIC NOTES On Sunday, April 29, The Trinity Church Choir, led by Martha Regelmann, Conductor, and the Friends Academy Choir performed gems of choral and instrumental music by Bach, Mozart, Faure and Rutter to a packed house at Trinity, sponsored by the Roslyn Chamber of Commerce. Among the soloists were cellist Nicholas Pascucci, pianist Colleen Stack, flutist Lucy Petropoulos and sopranos Ariann Miller and Laura de Bruin. This was a collaborative effort of the North Shore Episcopal Cluster churches (comprised of Trinity, Roslyn, St. Luke s, Sea Cliff, St. Paul s, Glen Cove and St. John s, Lattingtown) who, through their Outreach programs, have collected food and monetary donations for organizations that serve hungry Long Islanders. This concert raised a total of $746 and collected many pounds of food which were donated to the Harry Chapin Food Bank- Long Island Cares organization. Do you know all these people? This is the TRINITY CHOIR!!! Grateful thanks to them for their hard work, dedication, and beautiful singing! Front Row: Ken Bongort, Helen Oehrlein, Kathy Mendall, Diane Graf, George Graf. Middle Row: Sarane Ross, Ariann Forella, Emily Rudolph. Back Row: Jim Crawford, Aleta Crawford, Sheila Platt, John Platt, Andrew Cordero, and Martha Regelmann (Director). The full Choir will be back in residence September 9th. Meanwhile, exciting solos and duets will be part of our summer worship. If you like to sing (or want to Ring Handbells!!!), please consider getting involved in this vibrant ministry. Mother Margo & Lou Federico of the Roslyn Chamber of Commerce presenting flowers to performers Psalm 100:1-2 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Martha Regelmann

CAN YOU COUNT? $$$$ Every Monday a volunteer counts the weekly collection and any other amounts that have come in to the Church. There used to be 4 people, one for each week of the month, and even a fifth for that occasional extra week. Right now there are only 2 of us. Would you be willing to come on a Monday, count the money, enter the pledge amounts on a sheet, fill out a deposit slip, make copies of any checks, and take the deposit to any TD Bank? It takes anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour (when I don t add it up properly). It s easy. We will train you. Charlie Perrin is there to answer any questions. And you feel good knowing you are doing this service for our Church. How about it? Call Mary Lou Minard, to volunteer. Please. And while we are speaking of Checks Remember: April/May birthdays being celebrated On the 2nd Sunday of each month, we recognize and celebrate parishioners birthdays of that month. If you would like to remind us of an upcoming birthday in your family, please call the church office ( ). REMINDER... When you put your pledge checks in the basket or in the mail, please remember to write your pledge number in the memo section of the check. This applies to online checking as well. This will help those who are counting and recording your pledges to be accurate and quick. If you do not remember your number, please call the church office ( ). Thank you. Mary Lou Minard FYI New Church Office Hours: Monday & Thursday 9:00-4:30 (closed Tues, Wed & Fri) TRINITY TRANSITIONS Grant to them eternal rest Nancy Krug Eleanor Porter

NEW TAG SALE HIGH This year's Tag sale was a great success. Donations of items to be sold poured in, overflowing into the children's chapel. Many volunteers turned out to set up tables, sort through and display the merchandise, price items, post signs, and perform a myriad of other vital tasks. My sincere apologies if I have left anyone out. This past week has been a blur! It was wonderful seeing the Trinity community come together to make this event a great success. Helen Oehrlein Barbara Holzkamp provided detailed documentation on all the steps involved in a successful sale, and was always available when I had questions or needed advice. She was also at church every day (often several times a day) setting up. Ruth Fick did a terrific job on publicity, from press releases to mailing post cards to providing a strong Internet presence, which is becoming more important each year. Along with Cheryl Bernard and Carolyn Franks, Ruth also organized and ran the "Better Goods" shop. This Tag Sale mainstay had a classy new look this year in the fireplace room, and did a brisk business with its top name-brand items. Special thanks to Mary Lou Minard, Sarane Ross and Dawn Weill who spent many hours at Trinity during the week of the sale. Thanks to our heavy lifters, who also helped in many other ways: Ken Bongort, Jim and Aleta Crawford, Don Krug, Karl Hansen, Bill Holzkamp, John Platt, Merritt Randall, Ted and Lex Weill. Thanks also to: Alexis Alexander, Sandy (Cheryl Bernard s Mom), Mike Callahan, Lisa and Kaia de Bruin, Susan and Mallory De Maio, Roger and Edith Gerber, Maryellen Hansen, Jean Henning, Tracy DiStefano, Liz Kaye and her mother Barbara, Brigitte McConnell, Kathy Mendall, Manuel and Ann Mingorance, Cathy Oehrlein, Mother Margo, Charlie Perrin, John and Sheila Platt, Martha Regelmann, Joyce Sacripante and her sister Lorraine. Proceeds from the sale hit a new high of approximately $3,300 this year! This will allow our Outreach Committee to expand their important work in our community. Barbara Holzkamp & Don Krug pre-opening Helen Oehrlein with last minute posters to hang Tons of toys!

CARING FOR WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT S CEDARMERE ESTATE The Friends of Cedarmere, Inc is a tax-exempt corporation that cooperates with Nassau County and the Roslyn Landmark Society to preserve, restore and promote public access to the Cedarmere estate in Roslyn Harbor. The Friends concentrates on the heritage of this home of William Cullen Bryant, prominent 19 th century poet, newspaper editor, influential civic leader and founder of Roslyn s Bryant Library. The Godwin family, descendants of Bryant, donated the grounds and buildings of Cedarmere to Nassau County in 1975 for use as a museum. Our current project is restoration and maintenance of the Boxwood and Sunken Gardens whose layouts and plantings were established based on records going back to 1860 that describe how Bryant and his grandson Harold Godwin had designed them. Those interested in volunteering to work in the gardens are urged to contact us via wcbryant@optimum.net. Our longer-term goal is restoration and enhancement of the museum rooms in the Bryant House to be open again for the public to enjoy learning about Bryant's life and legacy. Information about membership and future events can be obtained at friendsofcedarmere.com. TRINITY ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Aleta Crawford is pleased to report that a painting of hers has been selected to hang in the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook during their show "Long Island, Natural Wonder". The exhibition will be available for viewing at the Long Island Museum, 1200 Route 25A, Stony Brook, NY from June 1 to June 27, with a reception for meeting the artists held on June 10th 2PM to 4PM. 8 40 TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY FOR PLATTS 40 TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY FOR FICKS On July 1, 1972 John and I were married at St. David s Church in Radnor, PA. The Reverend Nils Blatz officiated in his last official act as Associate Rector at St. David s before moving to Roslyn to become Rector of Trinity Church. Little did we know that our lives would once again intersect 8 years later when in 1980 our family moved from Chicago to Bayside, Queens. We took a trip out to Roslyn to say hi to Nils and ended up finding our spiritual home here at Trinity. We ll have two celebrations for the Glorious 40 th : a family celebration on July 7 and 8 when Emily, Shawn & Rowan and Sarah, Alan & Satya will be with us for the weekend; and then in mid- September we plan to take a trip to Spain that will include a visit with Ann and Manuel Mingorance in Grenada. We thank God for all those who 40 years ago vowed to do all in their power to support and uphold this marriage in the years ahead and for all those who have been supporting and loving us ever since. I met Peter on a blind date in the fall of 1970 when I was a freshman in college (and Peter, a senior) in Boston. We dated during that whole year while we both attended school and Peter served in the Army Reserves. We married a year later in October of 1971 at the Church of the Nativity in Mineola (my hometown church) and lived in the Boston area for about a year. Soon after, my Dad offered Peter a job in the family business, so off we went to work and live in NY. And the rest is history! We will celebrate our 40 th Anniversary by taking a Rhine River Cruise in July. Ruth Fick Sheila Platt
