1 The Call Sermon Title and Scriptures August 21, Guest Preacher - Rev. David Hockensmith New Paraments for the Sanctuary We have been worshiping in our beautiful new sanctuary for around a year and a half. It is wonderful how our church looks, receiving many positive comments and blessings since updating our sanctuary. However, one thing has been missing, new paraments. Paraments are the pieces of cloth that hang from the pulpit, the lectern and across the communion table. Central Christian Church has ordered new paraments for our beautiful new sanctuary. They will be white Bemberg Fabric with white fringe on the bottom and the red Disciples of Christ Chalice in the middle. This is just one more aspect to make our sanctuary look its absolute best. If you would like to help with the cost of the new paraments please let the office know or write on your donation New Paraments. New Fellowship Chairs! 160 new chairs have been purchased for the fellowship hall through funds made available by the Memorial Committee in memory of Don Carlson. Fellowship was very important to Don and we are confident that he would be proud of these new chairs. Sermon Title and Scriptures August 28, 2016 Saving Account Psalm 107:1-9 Luke 12:13-21 Fellowship Dinner Sunday, August 28 After Sunday School Come together as a community as we sit down to a meal together. The Youth Group of Central Christian Church will be putting on a Fellowship Dinner to help raise money for different events they will be doing and also to re-coup some funds spent on the Mission Trip to St. Louis. Please make plans to come for a wonderful meal of fellowship and joining together as the family of God. Thank you for all your prayers while brother was in the hospital and for your cards after his passing. FROM THE PASTOR S STUDY: September 26, 1979 A story I ve often told from the pulpit down through the years is one I heard when I was just a teenager. Riley Howard was well-known for his humorous stories, and was well-liked for a philosophy on life that could make one think without making one angry. I ve often wished I had remembered all of his tales which would have been ideal for a book, possibly entitled Pool Hall Parables. One such parable had to do with the family down the road from him that was extremely religious. One night at a church service, the man of the religious family got up for his testimony. Brothers and sisters, he said, on our way to meetin tonight we come to the big hill just south of the church. As the old Model T got halfway up, she just coughed and died. I knew right then that old Satan was tryin to keep us away, so I just had my woman and all the chillin climb out and get on their knees and pray. When we got back in the Ford, she started up first crank and never missed a lick till we got here. To this there was a chorus of Amen and Praise the Lord. Riley said he was impressed, and remembered it the next day as his old Model T wood-hauling truck stalled on him at the same hill. Riley said he got out, fell to his knees and prayed for power. When he tried it again, however, the engine was as dead as a hammer. Well, he sat down on the running board and thought and thought. It worked for them, why didn t it work for me? He said that finally a still, small voice spoke gently in his ear and instructed, Riley, if you will walk a couple of miles back into town and buy a gallon of gas, you will be able to make it up the hill. Riley said he found out a long time ago that the Lord wasn t going to do something for you that you could do for yourself. Peace, Mike

For more information call Kirby or Brad at CWF Needs a Volunteer The CWF ladies are in need of a volunteer to take care of the kitchen on Tuesdays from 10:30-1:00 while they re busy with their Service Day. The volunteer would be responsible for making coffee and tea, and for doing the dishes. Lunch is provided! Friends Sunday School Class The Friends Sunday School Class is taking a break for the month of August. We will resume class the first Sunday in September with a series by Marcus Borg - "The Heart of Christianity." This series is about emerging trends in the church. In the future other topics of great interest will be discussed. Everyone is welcome - come join us! Grandparents Day Boyd Elementary September 22 K-2-1:00-2:00pm :00-3:00pm Many children do not have grandparents to come to Grandparents Day. If you could come and spend an hour or so with a child for this occasion please call the church office. Thanks! Better Donuts! We are very excited to have a new company providing us with fresh and delicious fellowship donuts. They are a little more costly, but we think you re worth it! Culture Club Our after school program is starting it s 17th year. We have worked with Boyd Elementary School all these years as an outreach for our neighborhood. We need some more volunteers from our congregation! Please consider sharing yourself with the children that live in our neighborhood. Our program is three days a week (M,W,Th) from 3-5pm.

6 Again this year, our CWF/Disciples Women are putting together School Kits and Health Kits. Also, the state president of Church Women United challenged all the CWF members to put together Family Food packs and Women prison packs. These will need to be finished by the first part of October. If you can put together any of these kits, provide some of the items for the kits, or donate money towards any or all of the four, your help would be greatly appreciated. (Our CWF will provide the bags for the school kits). Put filled bags in boxes labeled Prison Pack. Please also label with the number enclosed. Toothbrushes are not allowed as part of these kits.
