EDITOR S NOTE Spring is springing. The days are getting longer. And everything is starting to grow again. There are lots of events coming up in the village, as you can see in the following pages. So I hope you can all find something to entertain you, to keep you occupied and to get you involved in village life over the next couple of months. There s plenty to be getting on with. Keep sending in your contributions to us and contact me if you have any ideas for improving this newsletter. NEXT DEADLINE 15th May 2016 newsletter@framptononsevern.com Terry Coughlin Tell us what you think of Your Village Newsletter We want your feedback us at: newsletter@framptononsevern.com CHAIRMAN S REPORT Spring has sprung, and the clocks are about to change. Hopefully, this will also apply to the FCA kitchen. Word has it that the Hot Chocolate Morning was a success, and it is hoped to be repeated in early autumn. We have been given several donations, and looking to see if there are any Grant monies to be had. There is little that we can do to change the layout, but we hope to increase the storage and cooking facilities to accommodate best usage in the future. I have said that the items on the roof are to be removed, so we wait for a few more dry days before their removal, so as not to have any problems with leaks. Thanks go to everyone who returned ideas with regards to the Annexe and playing field, and those who came to the second consultation evening. It is such a shame that from over 600 newsletters that were delivered, only a few villagers replied. Do we really not care what foundations are being laid for the future of our village residents, and in particular, our children, or perhaps on the other hand, does anybody bother to read it? There is a lot of hard work goes into the production of it, and even more hard work delivering in all winds and weathers. Please read and enjoy it, it is a very useful tool for updating your diary. As the skittles season draws nearer to its end, once again the Social Club will be looking for teams to play through the summer months. Please help by putting forward your teams to the bar staff, and look forward to a grand finals night. DAPHNE GARDNER April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 3 26/04/ :09

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING FCA REFURBISHMENT & REDEVELOPMENT OF CADBURY HALL & RECREATION FIELD The Consultation Evening held on Friday 4th March concluded our general consultation process. Within the community the overall level of involvement in the process has been disappointing but many interesting and innovative suggestions and requests have been generated. Our Executive Committee met on the 10th March to produce a short list of viable projects that had potential to benefit a broad cross-section of our community. A number of considerations from cost to sustainability were taken into account. We will now seek formal support from FCA Trustees for several projects that can be tackled in the near future... In the annexe we hope to (i) develop a cafe/meeting area downstairs, and (ii) a pool room upstairs. On the field we plan to (i) develop the early years play area. Other schemes, including an outdoor gym, multi-sports facility, skateboard/scooter area and housing, warrant consideration but more research and consultation are necessary. Nigel Wills. The of Frampton Community Association will be held on Thursday 12th May, 2016 at The Cadbury Hall to begin at 7.45 pm It is essential that all FCA Affiliated Groups are represented at this meeting. All FCA Members together with other interested parties are cordially invited to attend. April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 6 26/04/ :09

Clerk: Mrs Sheila Murray FRAMPTON ON SEVERN PARISH COUNCIL But what does the Parish Council DO? Chapter 7 44 Paynes Meadow Whitminster Glos GL2 7PS Tel: framptonparishcouncil@gmail.com The February meeting was quite short dealing mostly with routine items but we did consider Lakefield s School plans to become an Academy. Mr Withers, Chairman of the Governors answered our questions and we agreed some comments. The, Mr Ian Palmer Chairman of Frampton Youth Football Club (FYFC) asked for council s help with the proposed Indoor Training Facility which we agreed to consider at our March meeting. On planning, we supported the proposed houses at Lake House but suggested some further changes to improve the scheme. We are very pleased we have a neighbourhood warden Stuart Beard and you should see him about in the village. We hope to have some funds from developers to spend on community projects and agreed several small items, subject to quotations. Ask me if you want details, or contact me if you have ideas on how small amounts could be spent ( 500 or 1000). Our work to clear the Church Lane culvert continues we think there is still one blockage but the job is nearly done. We now have a parish council page on the social media site face book and I am told that some people do like us... And so to March, The main item was a discussion of the FYFC Indoor Training Facility. The FYFC Chairman, Mr. Ian Palmer, explained the plans and the reasons for the proposal, asking that Council should submit the planning application on behalf of the FYFC because this would greatly reduce the cost. The council has taken legal advice from the District Council and others which seem to say we can do this. It was not an easy decision; if the Council puts in the application will people think it is really our project? In the end we decided to set up a small working group to check the whole project and, if all is well, to submit the application. Is that clear? We supported some minor planning applications and paid some bills. We agreed to make some limited waiting places at the Green shop car park for shop users, not all day parking! We are pleased that we are having a return visit from our French friends from Bourgbarré on 6th - 8th May hosted by our FYFC a day of football on the Saturday and some entertainment and presentation of awards in the evening. We must organise fine weather! And this is the final chapter because in May you will elect a new council along with a new District Council if you are interested in what we do and how we try to help our community, have you thought of being a councillor? Phone me if you d like to know more on These notes are my personal summary of our meetings; for full minutes and papers see the Council s website at John R. Howe Full minutes are on the Parish Council s website April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 7 26/04/ :09

Parish Council Elections 5th May 2016 What matters to you in the Parish of Frampton on Severn? Is it the state of the local play area, the need for more activities for young people, improving services for older people, making the roads safer or ensuring that local businesses can thrive? Whatever needs changing in your neighbourhood, you could be just the person to change it by becoming a parish councillor. Perhaps you are already involved in local affairs and want to take the next step. Or you may be looking for a worthwhile and rewarding way to help your local community. Every Councillor representing their local community has their own reason for doing so. Ideally we would like to have a broad range of people who represent all parts of the village. You could be the fresh new talent that Frampton on Severn is looking for. Are you ready to change the face of local government? No other role gives you a chance to make such a huge difference to way our parish runs and develops for the future. If you want to take that next step please contact Sheila (Parish Clerk) on or me and we will point you in the right direction. Or come along to any of the meetings that take place on the first Wednesday of the month. Look forward to hearing from you. 9 Dear Friends, I wonder if any of you have been wondering what Celebrate Sunday is all about? Every month the banners go up and fliers go out: something is happening in the Cadbury Hall on the second Sunday of the month. But what is it? Will I enjoy it? Celebrate Sunday is a new venture loosely called café church. The hall is set out with tables and chairs, café style, for people to gather and meet friends old and new over a breakfast of bacon butties, croissants and tea and coffee. There is music playing and a video of images to set the scene for the theme of the day. On the tables there is usually a simple craft or other activity to keep you occupied either before or during the service time, and there is an area with a few toys suitable for the under 5s. We start with a traditional hymn and then tell the story for the day in a creative way. Then it s over to you on the tables to explore some of the questions which it raises; or to do some more craft; or simply to get another cup of coffee and have a chat with your friends. After a short time the leader draws things together and then there is a time to reflect or worship while more modern worship songs are played, a time for prayer and then a final traditional hymn. And more coffee! It may not sound much like the church you remember where everyone is quiet, sits in rows, and sits and stands when they are told. But it s a place where everyone is welcome; we talk together, we eat together, we listen to God s word together and we pray and worship God together. And to me that makes it church. So why not give it a try you will be very welcome! April 10th at 10am in the Cadbury Hall at Frampton Community Centre. Every Blessing Anne The Revd Dr Anne Spargo, Ashleigh House, The Street, Frampton-on-Severn, GL2 7ED Tel ; anne.spargo@btinternet.com News of the church family Funerals Frampton It was a simple send off at Gloucester crematorium for Roy Fielding Taylor of Ann Wicks Rd. Funerals Fretherne Many local farmers and others came to pay tribute to Hubert Hall in a service at Fretherne Church followed by cremation. His ashes have been laid to rest with his beloved wife Pat. We extend sympathy to all the relatives of those who have died recently. Confirmation There is to be a Confirmation Service in St James, Saul on Sunday May 15th at 11am. Confirmation is the opportunity to confirm those promises which were made on our behalf at our baptism or christening in other words a more personal commitment of Christian Faith. For many people it is also a time to take up their full membership of the Christian Church by receiving Holy Communion for the first time. I will be arranging some informal teaching sessions for anyone who is interested in exploring their faith further with a view to making this commitment, so please contact me if you would like to be part of that. 13 FRAMPTON ON SEVERN TABLE TENNIS CLUB At the time of writing, the season is not quite finished and the club have important fixtures remaining. In Stroud, the A side, are likely to finish in 6th place in Division 1 after a very good campaign considering the loss of two key players through injury and other unavailability. The team of Bob Murray, Steve Porter and James Dance have also reached the final of the league s Cup competition where they will play Thornbury A in late March. The B team, as expected, have found life in Division 1 tough after their promotion last season but they have remained competitive throughout and their second half results and performances have seen a big improvement on the first half. The C team will also finish the season in a creditable 6th place in a very competitive Division 2 while the D team need a few points from their remaining match to avoid taking the wooden spoon in in Division 4. The two Gloucester League sides have been more consistent with the A side finishing 3rd in Division 1 and the B team coming 4th in Division 2. Prospective new players of all standards are very welcome to join in the club s summer practice sessions which take place on alternate Thursdays from mid-may. Exact dates will be advertised on the Cadbury Hall noticeboards and posted on the Cadbury Hall facebook page. cafépingpong Taking place between 10:00 and 12:00 on Monday mornings, cafépingpong provides an opportunity to play table tennis while enjoying coffee or tea and biscuits. 14 Village Agent News from Christine Helping older people in Gloucestershire feel more independent, secure and have a better quality of life Unfortunately all of us may be faced with having to deal with the death of a loved one, which can be a very difficult time for dealing with practical as well as the emotional stress. I would like to tell you about a confidential service by Gloucestershire Registration Service together with the Department of work and Pensions, and your Local Authority, which I hope will make things easier for those of you who register a death. The service means that when you register a death all other government departments and Local Authorities will be informed on your behalf. This reduces the time spent corresponding with a number of agencies, and also reduces the need to send them copies of the death certificate. All you need to do is to make an appointment to register a death with one of the Registrars. To book an appointment you either telephone or go on line to If asked the service can contact the following agencies for you: Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenue and Customs Identity and Passport Service Local Authority Blue Badge Office Social Services DVLA Electoral Registration The information you need to provide to the Registrar will be : National Insurance Number and date of birth of deceased person, Details of any benefits or services they were receiving, Death Certificate, Driving Licence, Passport or passport number. January Talk Stonehouse to Nailsworth Railway Nearly 80 people enjoyed numerous slides of the local railways, bridges, level crossings, signal boxes and station buildings given by John Rogers, who has amassed a fascinating collection of historic photos of the system from 1864 onwards, when the line was opened to Nailsworth. The last scheduled train service ran in June 1947, although a special commemorative train, comprising a steam locomotive and 3 carriages, ran in Since then the lines fell into dereliction and were eventually removed altogether, although several of the station buildings and associated hotels plus railway sheds still stand today, which John showed as then & now. John is a model railway enthusiast, and had slides of recreated models of the Nailsworth rail layout in their heyday. There were several slides showing branch lines into Stanley Mill, Woodchester and Ryeford Saw Mills and descriptions of the Frampton narrow gauge railway that transported gravel from our local pits to either Frocester Station junction or to Splatt Bridge for canal-borne transport. February talk Cadbury Brothers Yet another record attendance! 84 people turned up to hear Jean and David Speed give a fascinating illustrated talk on the Cadbury family and their association with Frampton. Gwen Hewlett complimented the presentation with some entertaining readings from historic papers. Using a family inheritance, John Cadbury opened his first shop in Bull Street, Birmingham in 1824, selling, among other products, a drinking chocolate; with increasing demand, 2 further production warehouses were constructed in Birmingham, followed by the first chocolate for eating luxury chocolate cremes. Cadbury were granted a Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, expanded into London and built the brand new greenfield Bournville factory in 1879, initially employing 230 and providing housing, education and welfare facilities for employees, following their family Quaker ethos (as were the Fry and Rowntree families) Their famous dairy milk chocolate was developed and marketed from 1905 and by 1909 Cadbury employed nearly 5000 people. The First World War brought significant changes. Government Food Controllers demanded that Cadbury maximised food production in terms of condensed milk and abandon making luxury chocolates which resulted in a new factory alongside the canal in Frampton, using mainly locally produced milk delivered in churns (1200/day = 20,000 gallons) A new milk collection depot was also established at Charfield to deliver churns to Frampton by steam lorries. Post war the Frampton factory was extended again and also started producing chocolate crumb from cocoa beans delivered by canal via Bristol Docks. Cadbury built a community hut on their recreation field for employees which was replaced with the current Cadbury Hall in 1936; the existing large white concrete silo was also erected to store chocolate crumb, prior to transportation to Bournville. There were many works sports teams, an orchestra and numerous events for employees and their children. In the 1950 s mains electricity was installed and in the 1960 s oil-fired boilers replaced the previous coal-fired installation. The factory was still producing condensed milk and chocolate crumb. In 1883 Cadbury built a brand new factory in Churt, Wales and after a period of processing reject/reclaimed chocolate products, the Frampton factory closed, with the loss of 83 jobs. The 14 acre site is now used by a number of light industrial/commercial enterprises but the Cadbury legacy lives on with the Hall, Bowling Green, recreational areas and children s play facilities. The 3 local presenters were given a hearty round of applause for a fascinating presentation many thanks. April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 22 26/04/ :09

SEVERNSIDE MOTHERS UNION The February meeting was the Annual General Meeting as usual and afterwards Mrs. Pam Greenfield regaled us with some amusing poems picked at random to reflect the way we are! Draw your own conclusions!! The Rev. Mike took his last Communion for us before he and Joy depart for Hucclecote and retirement. We shall miss them both, especially Joy s cakes. They were presented with a Farewell card and a cheque. At the March meeting the new acting secretary welcomed members from Bright Hour to share in Communion taken by Rev. Dr. Anne Spargo for the last time as our Vicar in the Benefice. After notices had been given, especially mentioning that on Monday4th April at 2pm in the Cathedral, our Branch Leader, Helen Barton, along with Dorothy Marshall, will be Commissioned as the new Diocesan Presidents for 3 years. The Cathedral will be filled with visitors throughout the Diocese with a parade of all the Banners. The service will be taken by the Mothers Union Chaplin, Rev. Ruth Fitter. The ladies then enjoyed a very interesting and amusing talk by Mrs. Carol Alexander about her 20 odd years as Booking Secretary at the Badminton Horse Show. She was presented with an award by The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, and a beautiful bracelet by the Duke of Beaufort on her retirement. She saw her office as a small box room in the village, to a space in a large marquee on the showground; from being on her own to having several helpers surrounded by telephones and computers. A time of wonderful memories, from sadness to happiness and strange requests. Our next meetings will be on Tuesday 5th April and Tuesday 3rd May at 2pm in St. James Church, Saul. Please do come along and join us. Tea and cakes are always served afterwards. Severn Blazers invite you to join the St Georges Day Celebrations on 23rd April 2016 Framton s very own processional display team the Severn Blazers will be leading a small procession to celebrate St Georges Day, as part of the festivities organised by the Three Horseshoes. On the day we will set off from Watery Lane at 3 pm and meander around the green to the pub where we will finish with medieval music, Morris dancing and a Mummers play where the Gloucester Diamonds will join us. We hope that many of you will enter in to the spirit and join the procession. Severn Blazers is a community group, open to all; you can join our merry band of minstrels, learn to Morris dance (join a team or bring some friends to start your own) or make costumes, Beasts of Disguise and a Giant Dragon! Join our St George s procession preparations and rehearsals: Sunday 3rd April, Cadbury Hall, am to 1 pm Sunday 17th April. Village Hall, am to 1 pm Severn Blazers formed as a community association after working together on the wonderful Dedication 1315 procession last year. Since then the group has been invited to participate in a range of events including a medieval banquet, Stroud Goodwill, Stroud Wassail and we have a great line of events over the summer. In February we joined the St Blaise Day Celebrations at St Mary s Church which we hope will become a regular event. All this is possible thanks to generous donations from Jonathan Danos and the Dedication 1315 legacy fund, thank you! April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 33 26/04/ :09

From the Estate Office At the time of writing, the worst incident of Sheep-worrying in living memory has been in the news, with a farmer in West Sussex losing 116 of his sheep, many of them pregnant. With the ewes in the Estate s flock due to lamb soon after Easter and in light of this particularly horrific event (part of a general rise in similar incidents) dog owners are again urged to keep their dogs on leads when walking on pastureland. In the press, the West Sussex Police are quoted as saying So often in these incidents the owners are horrified by what their dogs have done, but they have to accept that even the most docile of pets can quickly turn into a killer given the opportunity. Back in January, the assistance of the Swan Rescue service was sought by an observant resident who had spotted that one of the swans that grace Farm Pool & Wicks Pool by Manor Farmyard, had lengths of fishing line caught in its beak. Fortunately the swan was caught and the fishing line removed, although a Mallard, similarly encumbered could not be netted and its fate is unknown. Permission to fish the pools on The Green is extended only to children under 13 years of age from Frampton Families and the closed season is mid-march to mid-june. It is absolutely essential that any fishing line that becomes detached or is broken MUST be retrieved as the threat to wildlife that it presents should not be ignored dates for your diary: 16th - 24th April Sunday 29th May Sunday 19th June Wednesday 22nd June Ronald Swanwick - Art Exhibition in The Wool Barn Open Gardens in aid of Longfield including the Manor and the Court Hidden Gardens open including the Manor and the Court The Festival Players Theatre Company in the Manor garden Hamlet Open air production 7.30pm (gates open at 6.30pm for picnics) 4th - 8th August Giffords Circus Tickets: The Painted Wagon 19th - 22nd August Sunday 11th September Fun Fair on The Green and Frampton Feast on Monday 22nd Frampton Country Fair Saturday 17th September Sheep Racing in The Park ARLINGHAM GARDENING CLUB TUESDAY 12th April ~ 7.45PM Author & Speaker Charlotte Popescu Hens in the Garden Arlingham Village Hall VISITORS ARE VERY WELCOME Visitor s admission 3 Annual Membership subscription 12 Just come along or phone for more information THE THREE HORSESHOES The Green, Frampton on Severn, GL2 7DY is CAMRA Gloucester Rural Pub of the Year com/3horseshoespub Why not call in and see why! 22 Frampton Shed Appreciation Society The Omnibus edition from our Foreign Correspondent The February meeting took place on the first Thursday of the month as usual. It is believed that Jurgen the German re-felted his shed, but sadly nobody could really understand what he was saying. The Treasurer had nothing to report other than to say that he hadn t seen his sheds all winter which didn t go down well, and the Vice Chairman declared that his shed was in a mess and he could do with some help cleaning it out. No volunteers came forward. One of the Forest cohort announced that his shed roof had blown off during the recent high winds and another Shedder had attempted to build a wine-rack in his shed but unfortunately while deciding on how to build it decided to sample some of the wine and subsequently failed to construct the wine rack. The member from Whitminster arrived late for the meeting but to everyone s delight he announced he now had a door on his shed! The March meeting took place on the first Thursday of the month as usual. Our Secretary was dragged back from sunnier climes to take the Minutes as no-one else could be bothered. This was a very interesting meeting as it nearly amounted to a coup by the Forest cohort as 50% of the Shedders were from the Forest for the first time. Apologies were received from the Chairman, the President and the Treasurer. The meeting started off badly as two of our number ordered gammon. We had no idea there were two vegetarians amongst us. Jurgen the German declared that his shed was still in flat-pack form and he requested that an erection party should be organised to erect said shed. Another of the Foresters stated that both his cows were in his shed and the vet was visiting tomorrow morning to check for lumps; she was a young female vet and could check his lumps as well. Other members felt that this was a bit sexist but undeterred he continued to tell the tale of a 94 year Forest woman who when asked by her grandson if she had ever been bed-ridden said, no my luvver but I ve bin table-topped a fair few times! He then stated that his other shed housed his 1949 Triumph Roadster restoration which was going to be a long project. Jurgen the German announced that he would be moving to Brighton in the near future. All agreed that he was probably covering his options if the EU referendum went the wrong wayhe would be close to ports for a quick getaway. We then thought it would be a good idea if the Shedders held their own referendum which duly took place. The result was 60/40 in favour of staying in the EU. Just at the moment that the result of the referendum was announced the fire alarms went off. We were told by the staff that it had been caused by the fried eggs ordered by one of our members. This was just what we needed to take our minds away from discussions on politics! One of the Foresters stated that there were large rats in Lydney that had taken up residence in peoples sheds and there was a concern that they could swim over the river to Frampton. There followed a discussion on how we could stop them. Another member said he had seen a car dressed up as a shed on the M5. We weren t sure on his state of inebriation at the time he saw this vision, but decided to keep an eye on the situation. It would have been useful if the member had installed a dashboard camcorder in his car to record this shed driving down the M5. Discussions then moved on to helmet cams and then a member asked if anyone had heard how Michael Schumacher, the seriously injured German racing driver, was faring. Jurgen the German said that he had not spoken to him recently. This comment was met by stony silence, but Jurgen insisted that this was a joke-in fact as far as we are aware it is the only German joke known to exist. The meeting then closed. The next meeting would be a Stag Shed as one of our young Shedders was getting married two days after the meeting. M.J.Hatcher (Secretary) April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 35 26/04/ :09

FOOTBALL REPORT - MARCH 2016 Well here we are in March and only another month to go before the end of the season! Unfortunately, the wet weather got the better of several games, which here in Frampton is very unusual. If we here in Frampton call off a game you can be sure that there will be no other matches played that day! Those matches will be re arranged at the end of the season. The 1st XI have won the last four of six matches against Bristol Telephones, Hanham Athletic, Broadwell, and Yate Town and lost against Gala Wilton and Rockleaze Rangers. They are currently in 2nd place in the Glos. County League. Their continued good form is to be commended and we hope for a good run in to the end of the season. The 2nd XI have only played four games since the end of January winning against Charfield and the local derby against Whitminster, and losing against Barnwood and Randwick which sees them in 7th place in Stroud League Div 1. The 3rd XI have continued their good run with wins against Dursley both home and away, Barnwood and Brockworth, drawing with Wickwar and losing against Quedgeley. This sees them in 5th place in the Stroud League Div 5. Off the field of play we would like to thank everyone who came along to the Easter Prize Bingo on March 11th. The night was a great success and we are sorry that we were a little late starting. We didn t anticipate so many turning up! We hope you all enjoyed yourselves and I know that some families went home with at least 6 Easter Eggs! Thank you to everyone who turns up on a cold, wet Saturday afternoon to support all the lads it is much appreciated! Let s hope the weather stays dry for the rest of the season so that we can get all the rearranged matches played before the end of April! Frampton on Severn Bowls Club The amount of people who knew somebody who bowled or had a relative who bowled is very common. The game has moved on in recent years and the age span of bowlers particularly at Frampton ranges from 15 to 85!!!!! We are a successful club with around 60 members (Male and Female). We have one of the best Greens and Clubhouses in the County. The Green opens mid April and is busy right through to Mid September. Every week during the season there is something going on... Cup games, League games, Club competitions, Fun Days, and Friendly games against neighbouring clubs. Something for everyone no matter if you are a beginner or and established bowler. Why not come up and have a go. We can lend you a set of woods and footwear (Trainers are OK). The green is open most days from Midday onwards. Please contact our Club Secretary Tom Griffiths on and he will organise for somebody to meet you at the Green. April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 36 26/04/ :09

Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue Old Bakery Cottage The Street Frampton on Severn Gloucestershire GL2 7EA or Hello from Wild Hogs. Well, the weather finally turned a bit colder in February and most of the hogs in the hospital have had a short period of hibernation. Some of them were moved to outdoor cages, so there was a lot less daily cleaning and feeding work to be done. Now, though, they are starting to wake up again, and most will be released once the weather is warm enough and there are plenty of grubs and beetles around. It s a good idea to leave a shallow bowl of clean water in your garden for any waking hedgehogs, and you might also like to supplement their natural diet with some dried cat food (not fish flavour). As you may remember, we will be chipping all animals we release, so we ll be able to recognise them if they come back to us, though we hope most of them don t! We re expecting to start releasing at the end of March or early April, so keep your eyes open for them on the roads too. Thank you all so much for responding to our plea for newspaper. We now have enough for this quiet time of year, and you may have noticed the wheelie bin is full, so we don t need any more at present. This time of year we plan our publicity events, and we have quite a number already to keep us busy through the spring and summer, ranging from hedgehog hospital Open Days to festivals and shows in towns and villages across the county. For some of the more distant events we will be sharing the effort, and the funds raised, with the three other rescue centres in the Gloucestershire Hedgehog Network. We will publish details of all events as we approach the time, both in the local magazines and on our website and Facebook. Thank you to the Village Society for donating the proceeds of their cake sale to us from the Chocolate Morning at the Cadbury Hall! A whopping 140!!! CAN YOU SPARE A FEW HOURS ON A FRIDAY? If you are over 16, reliable and interested in animals and wildlife conservation we would love to hear from you. A weekly duty in the hospital takes about 4 hours. All training will be given, no experience needed. Please give us a call. April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 37 26/04/ :09

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH We have just one more week left of the Lent Lunches. They started very quietly but gradually more people came along and last week we were extremely busy with 19 walkers accommodated in the Hewlett Room and this week we have another group of walkers so we are hoping we will be able to donate a substantial amount to the Severn Freewheelers. This group of volunteer motorcyclists take medical items urgently required to hospitals across the county and even further afield to hospitals in Birmingham and elsewhere as needed. One of the volunteers came along last week and spoke to us all which was extremely interesting. The Lent Course is also coming to a close. Nick has led the course together with Susie and it has been reasonably well attended. It has been extremely interesting and given rise to much discussion and those of us attending have thoroughly enjoyed it so we thank Nick and Susie for giving their time and making such an interesting course with much food for thought. The Bright Hour have held two meetings with the Mothers Union - one at the Chapel when we shared hymns, readings and prayers together and on the lst March we all attended Saul Church to take communion which was led by Revd. Anne Spargo. We have really enjoyed these times together and are planning to continue to do so in the future. This week we are looking forward to a visit from Mrs. Beryl Ridley who is going to give us a short talk on local history. We were extremely sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. Maisie s Millard. Maisie joined us at bright Hour for a few years before her move to Quedgely and we will miss her. We offer our deepest sympathy to her family. We are looking forward to our Easter Services and will be having a Communion Service at Chapel 9.30am on Good Friday morning followed by hot cross buns and at 2.00 will be joined by members of the Severnside Congregations for a service followed by a procession to the green for a service by the cross. Our Sunday morning Easter Family Service will take place at am followed by coffee and we do hope you can come along and join us at this important time in the year of the Christian Church. We have many different people leading our Sunday morning services now and members of our congregation are among those who lead worship - sometimes just giving the address with our Minister leading the Service. Services are held every Sunday morning at am. Communion is held on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Sunday School is also held with the children joining in the service for the first 15 mins and then enjoying their own activities in the schoolroom giving parents the opportunity to remain for the service. Everyone enjoys the fellowship together afterwards with coffee and much chat a great time for sharing news and friendship. We are holding our usual Easter Monday Breakfast and walk at 9.00 am not everyone walks, of course, but they really enjoy their bacon and egg breakfast!! All purchased from Wick Court Farm. There will be no Coffee Pop In on the last Friday of March as this is Good Friday but we will hold the Pop In as usual on the last Friday in April and then every last Friday of the month throughout the year. Do come along and join us for great coffee, scones, biscuits, a good Bring and Buy Table and homemade cakes to buy. Don t forget to come along also on Tuesday afternoons at 2.30 to BrightHour and Mum s don t forget Thursday morning Coffee Drop In s for you to bring along babies and toddlers enjoy chatting with other Mums when Susie and Dot will make you very welcome. It will be held again this year, on Sunday June 19th, so make a note in your diary. The event which has been organised by Stonehouse Rotary over many years, has always been run so that the Village and residents benefit from money raised. Over the years, donations have been made to support St Mary s Church and the Congregational Church, both the Village and Community Halls, Lakewood school, the Village playground, the Youth Cricket club, the Youth Football team, the Severnside Scout group, and two replacement bench seats for the Village Green. In addition to these, donations have also been made to individual good causes. A further donation was made from last year s event, towards the Frampton Archive and Museum currently being created in The Court by a small team of dedicated volunteers. The museum will be housing Clifford family, Frampton Court Estate and Village records and photographs. The Village Albums will also be kept in the Museum and will be available for the public to view on Mondays. A request had been made for financial support towards the cost of special display lighting. Modern overhead LED spotlights have been installed, in order to effectively illuminate the wall and cabinet displays. A cheque for 300 was presented by Stonehouse Rotary Club President - John Morris, to volunteer Jean Speed. Also present were archivist volunteer Pat Bennett and Mr and Mrs Clifford. 31 Wick Court & War Horse What a treat! All the staff and volunteers from the three Farms for City children were invited to a special showing of this wonderful theatre production of Michael Morpogo s imaginative story. The New Theatre was packed with staff, teachers and volunteers and over a thousand children who had been or were going to spend a week at one of the farms. The story itself is very moving and is now well known as a book, a film and this theatre production. The puppetry brings animals to life in such a believable way stunning. However, just as moving was the reaction of so many children who had been given the opportunity to spend a whole week working and playing on a farm. A number of children who had spent time at Wick Court recognised people they had met there - there s farmer John and farmer Dave. Bill the storyteller, who also leads bird-spotting groups was recognised by one lad who remembered being fascinated by Bill telling them about great TITS! After the performance we were all treated to a short talk by Michael Morpogo, who called back the horse and puppeteers to finish off the afternoon. As an event, it was a tribute to all those who provided such a positive experience to so many children. Well done Wick Court. Well done Farms for City Children Robin Wheeler Volunteer Vacancy for a part-time Gardener Farms for City Children, Wick Court, Overton Lane, Arlingham, Gloucestershire GL2 7JJ We are looking to appoint an experienced Gardener to run our kitchen gardens providing fruit and vegetables for the kitchen as well as interesting and purposeful work sessions with groups of visiting children (aged 8 11 years). The successful candidate will also be very involved in a new project to improve the recreational garden around the house. The postholder will be part of a friendly, enthusiastic team and would be expected to be involved with other aspects of farm life. The post is for 3 days per week. The successful candidate will be required to undergo enhanced DBS checks. Closing date 2/5/16 For more information please contact Heather Tarplee heather@farmsforcitychildren.org Marathon Man Rides Again. Seven years have elapsed since MM crossed the line at the London Marathon and vowed never to be so stupid again. He has been true to his word but a new challenge has arisen and MM plans to ride his bike from Land s-end to John O Groats at the end of May. MM is now undergoing arduous training with help from his peloton who accompany him on Sundays from home to cake-shop and back again in the vain hope of getting fit enough to ride 1000 miles without serious personal damage. MM will be crossing the Severn Bridge on Wednesday 25 May on route to Tintern and Monmouth. This is a particularly scenic part of the ride and he hopes a few cyclists from this area will join the ride for half a day. The plan is to raise money for Farms for City Children, one of whose farms is at Wick Court, Priding, Saul. There is a sponsorship page on the Just Giving website and an old fashioned clipboard and pencil (and donation Box) at the surgery in Frampton. ALL donations go to the farm as MM is funding all his own expenses including cake. He is riding as part of an organised group backed up by a van carrying a puncture outfit and a spare set of underwear. The particular project at Wick court is to provide an outdoor cooking and barbecue area for the children. Farms for City Children is a charity founded by the children s author Michael Morpurgo. There are 3 farms in Gloucester, Devon and Pembrokeshire. Children from city schools spend a week living and working at a farm. Many are disadvantaged or have special educational needs. Particular projects at present are the improvement of the Woodland area and the building of a wood fired bread and pizza oven so that the children can spend longer outside and cook and eat. MM will post regular updates on the justgiving site, if he can work out how to do it. I hope you will support this cause or a least give MM a cheery wave as he goes past on his bicycle. 34 Frampton in Focus Each issue we spend 10 minutes talking to someone who lives or works in Frampton, and share our findings with you. This time we ve been talking to Robin Wheeler How did you come to be working in Frampton? In 1976 my wife Barbara and I were living and working in London. We had Anna and Ben by then, aged two and four, and we were thinking of leaving to seek out a quieter life, not least because of the IRA s activities. Our London neighbours and good friends John and Jenny Treweek moved to Frampton that year. We came to visit, and from that point Frampton was the only place Barbara would consider! We saw 12 houses which weren t right, then John heard in the Shoes that Elm Tree Cottage was up for sale and we bought it. What about work? Qualified social workers were in short supply back then. We applied for a job share in Gloucester and got it the first job share ever seen in social services in the South West! We lived on one salary and were able to share looking after our (by then) three children. I retired in From what I know you ve been Chair of Governors at Lakefield, instrumental in projects such as building the playground while on the Community Association Committee, an actor and scriptwriter for the Perryway Players, a Parish Councillor, editor of this very newsletter and more. Why? I have always wanted to participate fully in what s going on around me, to be prepared to stand up and take responsibility while doing what I can to help make things happen. Most of it has been good fun too especially playing Hook in Peter Pan! Recently I have had the honour of being elected Chair of the Community Association. I m limited by poorer health these days, but it s still important to me that I carry on contributing as much as I can. Feeling part of this community, coupled with having fantastic friends and family, is what keeps me afloat. I heard you were also involved in setting up the local Labour group. Can you tell me about that? Barbara and I are socialists and our shared ideology has been an important part of our lives. In 1979 a group of us set up a local Labour Party group. There wasn t one here already, and amongst other things we wanted to dispel the idea that Labour supporters were somehow beyond the pale! We both feel that it s important not to live with stereotypes; to welcome diversity and individual choice. Favourite part of the village? Barbara and I both grew up in London. When we moved to the village we felt like we were on holiday every day. Here we are 40 years on and we still feel like that. This is a superb community to belong to and it s great to see younger people coming in and being part of it as the years go by. My favourite physical part of the village is the walk from here along the canal up to Saul Junction. I also love the silver band s Christmas concert at Cadbury Hall. What would you improve? I do think some more low cost housing is crucial. What did you eat for your last meal? Vegetable risotto. My favourite food is tapas. How do you like to spend your free time? One of my favourite activities is to cook with a good radio play on in the background. Two others are gardening and having a pint with my mates. Do you have a favourite book/film? I love the book Restless by William Boyd, and my favourite film is Steelyard Blues starring Donald Sutherland. Interview by Sarah McCurrich April_May_ED_ONLY_2016.indd 66 26/04/ :09
