2 3 RD SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME January 24, :45 & 11:00 am Worship WELCOME Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. Child care and a worship education program for preschoolers are available in Building D during this service. Consult an usher if you need an assistive hearing device or a largeprint bulletin. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence all electronic devices. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY 8:45 Voluntary in G Henry Heron 11:00 Prelude on Rhosymedre R.V. Williams *CALL TO WORSHIP Worship begins with God. God takes the initiative, calling us together. Our first act of public worship, therefore, is to heed God s call and to join with others in praising God. Companion to the Book of Common Worship One: Come, let us worship God together; for just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. All: Now we are the body of Christ and individually members of it. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. One: Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the youth and children say, Because I am not an adult, I do not really belong to the church, that would not make them any less a part of the church. If the older people say, Because I am not young, I have outgrown the church, that would not make them any less a part of the church. If the whole body were young, where would the experience be? If the whole body were older, where would the sense of new energy be? All: But as it is, God arranged the members in the body. There are many members, yet one body. One: Together with one another and with Christians around the world we are the body of Christ. If one member suffers, all suffer together! if one member is honored, all rejoice together! All: Now we are the body of Christ and individually members of it. Let us worship God together! Alleluia! [2] *Those who are able, please stand.

3 *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #435 es flog ein kleins waldvogelein We All Are One in Mission CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION All: Creator God, you have created us as unique individuals and called us to be your body, working together to serve your world. We confess that we are prone to competition and conflict, rather than cooperation and co-creating. We confess that we are inclined toward arrogance, fear, and jealousy, rather than love, compassion, and mutual respect. Silent confession One: Merciful God, All: Forgive us and give us the grace, different as we are, to function as a healthy body, thriving and growing in love. We pray in the name of the One who makes us one, Jesus the Christ. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt. tune: ellacombe Unite in mutual ministry our minds and hands and hearts, that we may have the grace to seek the power your peace imparts. So let our varied gifts combine to glorify your name, that in all things by word and deed, we may your love proclaim. (tune may be found as hymn #89) CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. ANTHEM Now Let Us All Praise God Gordon Young Now let us all praise God and sing our great Redeemer s praise; that we may all with one accord our joyful voices raise. Sing Alleluia! All ye servants of the Lord, praise him forever, sing Jehovah s mighty pow r, praise him forever. Sing of his righteousness. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Why do we sing in response to the assurance of pardon? The astoundingly good news of our reconciliation to God through Jesus Christ frees our tongues to sing mighty praise to God. (Companion to the Book of Common Worship) But perhaps the lyrics of Robert Lowry express it best: The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing! All things are mine, since I am his! How can I keep from singing? Gordon Young ( ) was an American organist and composer. He was a graduate of Southwestern College, and the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. His published works total over 800, and a number of his church anthems and organ compositions have become standard repertoire. [3]

4 NEW TESTAMENT READING I Corinthians 12:12-27 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 11:00 - LITANY OF PARTING For first- and second-graders as they leave for worship enrichment Congregation: May God be with you there. Children: May God be with you here. SERMON Pam Driesell The ductus arteriosus...we Owe Our Lives to It! *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The early Christians recognized a diversity of abilities and functions as gifts of the Spirit. Some were tempted to use these gifts to serve their own needs and ambitions, to form elite groups who looked down on others. But the gifts were given for the common good, to build up the community in love. and to equip it for its mission in the world. The diversity in the early church caused tension and conflict. Yet the Spirit bound them into one body, enriched by their differences. We know that the same Spirit gives us a unity we cannot create or destroy. The Spirit moves among us, not to end diversity or compel uniformity, but to overcome divisiveness and bitterness, and to make us the body of Christ, that we might Make God s Love Visible, here and now. Amen. So be it. Amen. adapted from the PCUSA Declaration of Faith and Trinity Presbyterian Church mission statement *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt: beecher Triune God, mysterious being, undivided and diverse, deeper than our minds can fathom, greater than our creeds rehearse: help us in our varied callings your full image to proclaim, that our ministries uniting may give glory to your name. (tune may be found as hymn #343) [4] PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

5 GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY 8:45 O Come, Let Us Sing Sven Lekberg O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his and he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 11:00 Praise God in His Holiness Geoffery Shaw Praise God in his holiness: praise him in the firmament of his pow r. Praise him in his noble acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him in the sound of the trumpet: praise him upon the lute and harp. Praise him in the cymbals and dances. Praise him upon the strings and pipe. Praise him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praise him upon the loud cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Sven Lekberg ( ), composer of today s anthem, was an American pianist, organist, educator and composer. Trained at Northwestern University and the Eastman School of Music, he also studied in Paris under pianist Alfred Curtot and famed organist Marcel Dupre. He spent 27 years as Head of the Music Department at Simpson College. During this time he produced a rich legacy of writing for voice and instruments. *DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION *CLOSING HYMN #436 *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION We Are Your People BENEDICTION RESPONSE And the Peace of God whitfield Henry Purcell CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY 8:45 Fugue in F Minor Charles Burney 11:00 Chaconne in G Louis Couperin The Blessing is not a closing prayer, but God s blessing pronounced by the minister on the people who are about to make their departure... We go out to meet joys and obligations, pleasures and troubles, secure in the shelter of God s trustworthy Word, and strong in its power. Companion to the Book of Common Worship [5]
