We believe worship is the heart of our life together. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence all electronic devices. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY 8:45 American Folk Hymn Suite Michael Burkhardt 11:00 Communion Jean Langlais In his book Israel s Praise, Walter Brueggemann says, praise articulates and embodies our capacity to yield, submit, and abandon ourselves in trust to the One whose we are. The 98th Psalm is beloved in the Christian community for lifting our voice of praise and helping people of faith catch glimpses of divine wonder. CALL TO WORSHIP from Psalm 98 One: Sing to God a new song. All: God has done marvelous things One: Make a joyful noise to the Lord! All: Break forth into joyous song and sing praises. One: Let the sea roar and all that fills it. All: Let the world and all its people sing together for joy! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #430 darwall s 148th Come Sing, O Church, In Joy CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: Loving God, All: We have not loved you or each other with our whole hearts. moment of silence for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession One: All: Merciful God, Give us the grace to receive your forgiveness and lead us toward wholeness, that we may be filled with your joy and live in the way of Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen. 2 *Those who are able, please stand.

3 ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt tune: monkland How our hearts with joy abound, with your beauty all around; words are feeble to express your great love and righteousness. All: Thanks be to God. NEW TESTAMENT READING John 15:9-17 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 11:00 LITANY OF PARTING For Kindergartners and first-graders as they leave for worship enrichment Congregation: May God be with you there. Children: May God be with you here. SERMON Oh Joy! Pam Driesell *HYMN OF AFFIRMATION #507 I Come with Joy dove of peace GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY 8:45 Song of Joy John Ness Beck He hath put a new song in my heart; praise, even praise unto our God. Many shall see it and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Blessed is the one that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud. Many, O Lord, are thy wonderful works; they are more than American musician John Ness Beck ( ) was a gifted and prolific composer of music in all genres, particularly sacred choral music. Born in Warren, Ohio he graduated from the Ohio State University with degrees in music, the arts and sciences. After a tour of duty with the U.S. Army he became increasingly involved in arranging and conducting various musical ensembles and went on to teach at his alma mater. His wellcrafted and accessible compositions have found favor in schools and churches all over the United States and abroad. 3

4 can be numbered. I delight to do thy will, O my God; thy law is within my heart. I will declare thy salvation! The familiar setting of Jesu, Joy of Man s Desiring sung this morning is by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) and is the most common English text used for the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147. Composed during his first year as Cantor in Leipzig, Germany, this chorale movement is one of Bach s most enduring works. 11:00 Johann Sebastian Bach Jesu, Joy of Man s Desiring Jesu, joy of man s desiring, holy wisdom, love most bright, drawn by thee, our souls aspiring, soar to uncreated light. Word of God, our flesh that fashioned with the fire of life impassioned. Striving still to truth unknown, soaring, dying, round thy throne. Through the way where hope is guiding, hark what peaceful music rings, where the flock in thee confiding, drink of joy from deathless springs. Theirs is beauty s fairest pleasure; theirs is wisdom s holiest treasure. Thou dost ever lead thine own, in the love of joys unknown. *DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION INVITATION TO THE TABLE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Congregational responses during prayer (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. 4

5 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. COMMUNION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 8:45 As the ushers indicate, the congregation will come forward to receive communion. Gluten-free bread is available on the communion table. After receiving the bread, participants should dip the bread in the chalice and partake. For those unable to come forward, elders are available to serve you where you are seated. 11:00 The elements used in the Lord s Supper are wine and gluten-free bread. For those who do not wish to drink wine, grape juice is in the outer rim of the trays. When passing the bread to your neighbor, say, This is the Bread of Life. When passing the wine or juice to your neighbor, say, This is the Cup of Salvation. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER *CLOSING HYMN #464 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION hymn to joy If one watches closely during the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving, there is a moment when the prayer switches from one leader to another. Typically Pam will start with the familiar, The Lord be with you... and ends as the congregation affirms the Memorial Acclamation that Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again. The next part is technically called the Epiklesis, Greek for Invocation. In this part of our prayer we ask for the power and presence of the Holy Spirit be poured out on the elements so that we may become the risen body of Christ in and for the world. 11:00 BENEDICTION RESPONSE Amen John Stainer CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY 8:45 Rigaudon Andrè Campra 11:00 Final from Symphony VI Charles-Marie Widor As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world. 5
