As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence all electronic devices. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY A Mighty Fortress is Our God Dietrich Buxtehude Our Call to Worship this morning comes from a traditional and beloved hymn written by Isaac Watts in It is a paraphrase of Psalm 90. Legend has it that as a young boy Watts complained to his father that the singing at church was heartless. His father replied, Why don t you give us something better to sing? Watts did just that and for the next two years he wrote a new hymn every Sunday. More than 600 hymns have been attributed to Watts and many are still sung today, including Joy to the World and When I survey the Wondrous Cross. *CALL TO WORSHIP One: O God, our help in ages past, All: Our hope for years to come, One: Our shelter from the stormy blast, All: And our eternal home. The word sacrament comes from the Latin sacramentum, which means mystery. Sacraments (in our tradition baptism and the Lord s Supper) are holy mysteries that we do not and cannot fully understand but through which we believe God s invisible grace becomes visible to us. The great early church theologian Augustine ( ) was the first to describe sacraments as outward, visible signs of inward, spiritual grace. 3

American musician Lloyd Larson is an active composer and arranger for several major publishing companies of church and school music. His music compositions and arrangements number well over 1,300 works. He has been involved in church music ministry for over 35 years, serving churches in Indiana, Ohio, and Minnesota. This morning s beautiful setting of the beloved hymn, This is My Father s World also incorporates the music of Gabriel s Oboe by Ennio Morricone. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit: we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! Thirteen years ago, Trinity Church called Erin McGee to serve as our Associate Pastor of Children and Family Ministries. Today, we officially release Erin from that call to pursue a new call as Pastor of First Presbyterian Church El Campo, Texas. Erin has impacted a generation of Trinity children and their families through her faithful service. Trinity children who were in 5th grade when Erin started are now young adults! 8 Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, by Marcus Borg, is divided into three parts: Biblical Foundations, Old Testament, and New Testament. Borg helps make sense of the biblical narrative and introduces fresh perspectives that challenge readers to think deeply and make meaning of the biblical text. SERVE WHOLEHEARTEDLY BCM Needs Summer Volunteers Buckhead Christian Ministry provides emergency assistance for families in our community. They have immediate openings for service volunteers in June, July, and August. Many of their regular volunteers are off for the summer, and they are in need of our support!
