2 BAPTISM of the LORD January 11, :45 & 11:00 am Worship Dietrich Buxtehude ( ) was active as a Lutheran church musician, composer and organist in North Germany, principally in Lübeck. He was a key practitioner of the rhetorical style of early Baroque organ composition, and was a principal teacher of Johann Sebastian Bach. Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the triune God. In worship, the people of God acknowledge God s presence in the world and in their lives. As they respond to God s claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ, believers are transformed and renewed. -from The Directory of Worship, PC(USA) WELCOME Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. Child care for children through Kindergarten is available during this service in building D. Consult an usher if you need an assistive hearing device or a largeprint bulletin. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence your cell phones. Following worship, you are invited for a time of conversation and refreshments in Williams Hall. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY 8:45 Largo in d Minor Vivaldi-Bach 11:00 How Brightly Shines the Morning Star Dietrich Buxtehude *CALL TO WORSHIP One: Wade into the waters of love; All: Step into the rivers of blessing. One: Here, find the renewing streams of mercy. All: Here, taste the wonder of God s goodness. One: Feel the waters of life; All: Know the joy of baptism. One: Touch the springs of eternal life; All: Sing of the triumph of God s blessing. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #461 God Is Here! CALL TO CONFESSION abbot s leigh PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: Loving God, All: your love for us reaches from the cradle to the grave and beyond. Your word reminds us that in Christ we are your beloved children. There is no place or time or situation in which we are cut off from your care. Yet, we confess that at times we doubt our own worth, forget our blessing in baptism, and act out of fear and insecurity. Silent confession [2] *Those who are able, please stand.

3 One: Forgiving God, All: pour out your baptismal grace upon us. Grant each of us a new birth of freedom and hope, with the power and perseverance to become what you have created us to be. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE bunnesan Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ, our King; Born of the Spirit, we are God s children, joyfully now God s praises we sing. (may be found as stanza 3 of hymn #492) CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT READING Genesis 1:1-5 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 11:00 ANTHEM Franz Joseph Haydn In the Beginning In the beginning God made heaven and earth; and the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. In the spirit, God moved upon the face of the waters; and God said: Let there be light, and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. NEW TESTAMENT READING Mark 1:4-11 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. LITANY OF PARTING For first- and second-graders as they leave for worship enrichment Congregation: May God be with you there. Children: May God be with you here. SERMON First Things First Pam Driesell *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH All: We believe that Baptism is the visible enactment of the invisible reality that the Word proclaims and promises: God s redeeming grace is offered to all people. Baptism summons us to respond to God s grace and calls for decision at every stage of life s way. The waters of Baptism remind us that God s faithfulness is constant and sure, even when human faithfulness to God is not. God s faithfulness needs no renewal. Human This morning s anthem is an excerpt from Franz Joseph Haydn s monumental 1796 oratorio The Creation, depicting the creation of the world as described in the book of Genesis. This brief, dramatic scene occurs at the opening of the work, after an orchestral prelude depicting the darkness and chaos of the void. The soloists represent angels who narrate and comment on the Genesis events. The church confesses the Scriptures to be the Word of God written, witnessing to God s self-revelation. Where that Word is read and proclaimed, Jesus Christ the Living Word is present by the inward witness of the Holy Spirit -from The Directory for Worship, PC(USA) [3]

4 faithfulness to God needs repeated renewal. One: And so I invite us all to renew our Baptismal promises, believing that God is moving over the chaos of our lives and creating new life even now. Trusting in God s grace, do you turn away from anything that separates you from God s love, and do you reject evil and its power in the world? All: I do. One: Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as Lord, the One in whose ways you will follow, and Savior, the One to whom you will turn for help? All: I do. One: Will you show God s love to all people? All: I will, with God s help. One: Do you renew the covenant God made with you in Baptism, and will you devote yourself to learning and fellowship with God s people, to the breaking of bread and prayers? All: I do, and I will, with God s help. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt: beecher Out of Deep, Unordered Water Out of deep, unordered water God created light and land, world of bird and beast, and later, in God s image, woman, man. Refrain: There is water in the river. Bringing life to tree and plant. Let creation praise its giver: there is water in the font. Water on the human forehead, birthmark of the love of God, is the sign of death and rising; through the seas there runs a road. Refrain (may be found as hymn #494) Prayer is at the heart of worship. In prayer, through the Holy Spirit, people seek after and are found by the one true God who has been revealed in Jesus Christ. They listen and wait upon God, call God by name, remember God s gracious acts, and offer themselves to God. -from The Directory of Worship PC(USA) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY 8:45 Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters Ruth Duck Wash, O God, our sons and daughters, where your cleansing waters flow. Number them among your people; blessed as Christ blessed long ago. Weave them garments bright and sparkling; compass them with love and light. Fill, anoint them; send your spirit, holy dove and heart s [4]

5 delight. O, how deep your wisdom! Unimagined, all your ways! To your name be glory, honor! With our lives we worship, praise! We, your people, stand before you, water washed and Spirit born. By your grace, our lives we offer. Recreate us; God, transform. 11:00 Down to the River Traditional arr. Mackenzie-Curry As I went down to the river to pray, studyin about that good ol way and who shall wear the starry crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O sisters, let s go down, come on down, down to the river to pray. *DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION *CLOSING HYMN Go My Children ar hyd y nos Go, my children, with my blessing, never alone. Waking, sleeping, I am with you, you are my own. In my love s baptismal river I have made you mine forever. Go, my children, with my blessing; you are my own. Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure. Here you heard my dear Son s story, here you touched him, saw his glory. Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure. Go, my children, fed and nourished, closer to me. Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free. Here my Spirit s power filled you, here my tender comfort stilled you. Go, my children, fed and nourished, joyful and free. (Tune may be found as hymn #544) AR HYD Y NOS is a Welsh melody from the eighteenth century. It was first published in The Christian Lyre (1830) stated the tune was set to There s a Friend Above All Others. Many know the tune as the setting for All Through the Night. This hymn sends us forth as children blessed by God. 11:00 CONGREGATIONAL MEETING *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY 8:45 Prelude in a Minor Benedetto Marcello 11:00 Carillon Sortie Henri Mulet As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world!
