NOVEMBER 22, :00 AM CHRIST THE KING/REIGN OF CHRIST

CHRIST THE KING/REIGN OF CHRIST November 22, :00 am Worship Today is Christ the King Sunday, also known as Reign of Christ Sunday. This festival ends our marking of Ordinary Time after the Day of Pentecost, and moves us to the threshold of Advent, the season of hope for Christ s coming again at the end of time. The day centers on the crucified and risen Christ, whom God exalted to rule over the whole universe. As the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, Christ is the center of the universe, the ruler of all history, the judge of all people. In Christ all things began, and in Christ all things will be fulfilled. In the end, Christ will triumph over the forces of evil. WELCOME Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. Child care and a worship education program for preschoolers are available in Building D during this service. Consult an usher if you need an assistive hearing device or a largeprint bulletin. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence your cell phones. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY J. S. Bach, arr. Virgil Fox Now Thank We All Our God *CALL TO WORSHIP One: The Lord reigns; All: Let the earth be glad! One: The whole of creation declares the glory of the Lord. All: The Lord reigns; let the earth be glad! One: Come, let us worship and declare the glory of the Lord. All: We come to proclaim God s Kingdom to the ends of the earth, God s love to the highest mountain, God s forgiveness to the depths of the sea. One: The Lord reigns; All: Let the earth be glad! *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #150 Come, Christians, Join to Sing madrid CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION All: Holy God, how often we trust in the power of earthly rulers, instead of the power of your transforming love. Help us to turn our hearts to you, and our loyalties to your call upon our lives. [2] *Those who are able, please stand.

Silent confession One: Merciful God, All: Restore us in your love, and set us free to forgive as we have been forgiven, by the grace and mercy of Christ. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE lauda anima Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King. (may be found as stanza 1 of hymn #478) CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE READING Jeremiah 12:1-6 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Sing Praise to Christ Johann Sebastian Bach Sing praise to Christ, the Lord. Alleluia! Sing praise to Christ, our risen Savior and King. Adore him forever, and worship his name. LITANY OF PARTING For first- and second-graders as they leave for worship enrichment Congregation: May God be with you there. Children: May God be with you here. People have an idea that the preacher is an actor on a stage, and they are the critics, blaming or praising the preacher. What they don t know is that they are the actors on the stage; the preacher is merely the prompter standing in the wings, reminding them of their lost lines. Søren Kierkegaard SERMON The University of Adversity Cleo LaRue [3]

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe that Jesus announced the coming of God s kingdom and its hidden presence in the midst of the world s kingdoms. He taught his disciples to seek God s kingdom first. The Christian life is an offering of one s self to God. In worship the people are presented with the costly selfoffering of Jesus Christ, are claimed and set free by him, and are led to respond by offering to him their lives, their particular gifts and abilities, and their material goods. PC(USA) Directory of Worship We believe Christ gives us and demands of us lives in pilgrimage toward God s kingdom. Like Christ, we may enjoy on our journey all that sustains life and makes it pleasant and beautiful. No more than Christ are we spared the darkness, ambiguity, and threat of life in the world. We are in the world, but not of the world. Our confidence and hope for ourselves and other people do not rest in the powers and achievements of this world, but in the coming and hidden presence of God s kingdom. Christ calls each of us to a life appropriate to that kingdom: to serve as he has served us; to take up our cross, risking the consequences of faithful discipleship; to walk by faith, not by sight; and to hope for what we have not seen. This we believe. Amen. Affirmation of Faith (from the PCUSA Declaration of Faith) *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE coronation All hail the power of Jesus name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all! bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all! (tune may be found as stanza 1 of hymn #142) Sir Philip Ledger ( ), author of today s Offertory anthem, is a British composer, conductor, and academician. He is best known for his tenure ( ) as Director of the Kings College Choir of men and boys, where he succeeded the famed Sir David Willcocks. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Sky Phillip Ledger Christ, whose glory fills the skies; Christ, the true, the only light; sun of righteousness, arise, triumph o er the shades of night; dayspring from on high, be near; daystar, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day s return, till thy mercy s beams I see; till they inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart. Visit, then, this soul of mine; pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, radiancy divine, scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day. [4]

*DOXOLOGY #592 old hundredth *PRAYER OF DEDICATION *CLOSING HYMN #155 Rejoice, the Lord is King BENEDICTION RESPONSE And the Peace of God *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY Now Thank We All Our God darwall s 148th Henry Purcell Sigfrid Karg-Elert As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world! Sigfrid Karg-Elert ( ) was a German composer of considerable fame in the early twentieth century, best known for his compositions for organ and harmonium. After having served as a regimental musician during WWI, Karg-Elert was appointed instructor of music theory and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory in Encouraged to compose by no less a figure than Edvard Grieg, one of his compositional heroes, Karg-Elert was also greatly influenced by the harmonic language of French Impressionism.
