REFORMATION SUNDAY Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the movement that changed the world. OCTOBER 29, :45 & 11:00 AM WORSHIP TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 3003 HOWELL MILL ROAD NW ATLANTA, GEORGIA

Reynolds Couch is acting as the Beadle for today s service, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Originally a role reserved for protecting a church s lone Bible, the Beadle now serves in a ceremonial capacity for many Reformed churchs. This includes carrying the Bible in the worship processional and voicing official decrees at church functions. The text of our familiar opening hymn this morning was written by Martin Luther in It is based on Psalm 46, and became the rallying cry of the Protestant Reformation. Modern Christians sometimes find the vivid imagery of the battle against Satan, our ancient foe, difficult to relate to, in part because they are far removed from the experience of Luther and the early reformers. However, Luther s stand was a dangerous one, and he was willing to put his life on the line for his beliefs. These strong stanzas reflect his supreme confidence in the salvation of Jesus Christ, and its ability to overcome evil through the supremacy of the word of God. [2] REFORMATION SUNDAY 30 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 29, :45 & 11:00 am Worship Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. We believe worship is the heart of our life together. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence all electronic devices. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. OPENING VOLUNTARY 8:45 Ein feste burg Johann Pachelbel 11:00 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Dietrich Buxtehude *CALL TO WORSHIP One: Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. All: In you, we come home to rest, to wrestle, to love, to be loved. We dwell in you. One: Before the mountains were born, before you delivered the whole world, from everlasting past to everlasting future, you are God. All: In you, we are called to venture into a new future we dream, we flourish, we move on, we rejoice. We dwell in you. *PROCESSIONAL HYMN #260 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God CALL TO CONFESSION ein feste burg PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: Merciful God, All: We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. *Those who are able, please stand.

moment of silence for examination of conscience and personal prayers of confession One: Lord, in your mercy, All: Hear our prayers, heal our brokenness, help us live into your forgiveness so that we may delight in your will and walk in the way of Jesus Christ, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE alt. tune: dickinson college Lord, you have been our dwelling place, a refuge where our feet have trod. Before you placed all things in space, from everlasting you are God. (tune may be found as hymn #374) Today s Prayer of Confession is familiar to many in the Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Anglican traditions. With antecedents dating back to at least the 1559 edition of the Book of Common Prayer, this confession says all that a community needs to confess, while grounding us in the company of the great cloud of witnesses. This is important as the Reformed Church insists that faith cannot thrive outside of being practiced in a community of faith. CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE Please sign and pass the Friendship Register. 11:00 - ANTHEM The Gift of Love Hal Hopson Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire, and not have love; my words are vain, and sounding brass, and hopeless gain. Though I may give all I possess. And striving so my love profess, but not be giv n by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin. Come Spirit, come, our hearts control. Our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship and are freed. Amen. 11:00 - LITANY OF PARTING For first- and second-graders as they leave for worship enrichment Congregation: May God be with you there. Children: May God be with you here. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE READING Deuteronomy 34:1-12 One: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. [3]

SERMON Grace at the Limits Leanne Van Dyk Today s affirmation is taken from A Declaration of Faith which was written in the 1970s in a poetic in style and emphasizes that God is compassionate and ineffable. Trinity s own, Professor Shirley Guthrie, who taught at Columbia Theological Seminary for 40 years, was a coauthor. Unlike, some of the more ancient confessions of faith, this affirmation intentionally written in a form to be easily used to worship. *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The church s story with God did not end with the latest events recorded in Scripture. Across the centuries the company of believers has continued its pilgrimage with the Lord of history. It is a record of faith and faithlessness, glory and shame. We confess we are heirs of this whole story. We are charged to remember our past, to be warned and encouraged by it, but not to live it again. Now is the time of our testing as God s story with the church moves forward through us. We are called to live now as God s servants in the service of people everywhere. from A Declaration of Faith *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE st. anne O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast and our eternal home. (may be found as stanza 1 of hymn #210) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. [4] GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY 8:45 God is Our Refuge Tomas Fleming God is our refuge and our strength, our ever present aid, and though the mountains be removed, we shall not be afraid; though hills amidst the seas be cast, though foaming waters roar, yea, though the mighty billows shake the mountains to the shore. The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. A river flows whose streams make glad the city of our God, the holy place wherein the Lord Most High has his abode; since God is in the midst of her, unmoved her walls shall stand, for God will be her early help, when trouble is at hand. A mighty fortress is our God, a sword and shield victorious; he breaks the cruel oppressor s rod and wins salvation glorious. from Psalm 46 and Martin Luther

11:00 O All Ye Nations Heinrich Schütz O all ye nations, praise the Lord; O praise the Lord, all ye people. Praise ye Jehovah in his strength; all that hath life, praise Jehovah. God s loving kindness unto us is great and merciful. With heart and with voice in him rejoice; for his truth endureth evermore. Alleluia, sing praises! Alleluia, praise ye the Lord! from Psalm 117 *DOXOLOGY #592 *PRAYER OF DEDICATION *CLOSING HYMN #457 I Greet The Who My Sure Redeemer Art *CHARGE AND BENEDICTION old hundredth toulon 11:00 - BENEDICTION RESPONSE John Rutter The Lord Bless You CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY 8:45 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Johann Walter 11:00 Toccata in D Minor Johann Sebastian Bach As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world. Heinrich Schütz ( ) was a composer and organist, generally regarded as the most important German Protestant composer before Johann Sebastian Bach and one of the most influential musicians of the Reformation. After serving the church as a choir-boy he went on to study law at Marburg before going to Venice to study music with Giovanni Gabrieli. He subsequently moved to Dresden in 1615 to work as court composer to the Elector of Saxony. His larger vocal compositions often display the rich polychoral style he inherited from Gabrieli and Monteverdi during his study in Italy. His works embody two key elements of the Reformation- they are based on Biblical texts, and they were written in German, not Latin, so as to be easily understood by the listener. This morning s closing hymn is an anthem of the reformed faith, and was first published in the French Psalter in Strassburg (1545), edited by none other than John Calvin ( ). He is often credited with writing its text and tune, although scholars sometimes dispute this fact. [5]
